I'm relieved to see Onward among the nominees. Though the Golden Globes tend to mostly nominate mainstream American films, so I wasn't too worried about a possible exclusion this time. I'm happy for Glen Keane and Over the Moon, too. Also for Soul, though it's not a surprise it got those two nominations.

Reznor/Ross are actually nominated twice (the other for Mank.) I wonder if that will split the vote...

I didn't think Hamilton would count for any awards since its just a recording of a stage performance(isn't it?)

I didn't expect that either. It has been deemed ineligible for the Oscars, though, as this article shared by Sotiris in the Hamilton thread says. However, it seems there have been some precedents in the past of filmed plays being nominated at the Oscars.

I wonder if Hamilton can play by different rules than the average taped play because they filmed 3 takes and combined them to create the film, one take of which was not filmed in front of an audience, so it was performed solely for the cameras.

^It could be, I don't know. But to me the fact that they can compete with normal films seems a bit like cheating.

Here's Best Animated Film. There will only be three nominees this year.

Six films will progress to Round Two of voting, and three will be nominated. This category is voted for in all three Rounds by an opt-in Chapter. 13 films were submitted for consideration.

Soul also made the shortlists for Best Picture, Original Screenplay, Original Score, Sound and Special Visual Effects. Mulan got on the shortlists for Costume Design, Makeup & Hair and Visual Effects. The One and Only Ivan also got shortlisted for Visual Effects.

Six films have been longlisted, and three will be nominated. Rounds One and Two (longlist and nominations) are a jury vote, and an opt in chapter will select the winner in Round Three.

^Thanks for letting us know, estefan! It's the first time they announce these shortlists, right? I'm surprised there's even one for Best Picture. The Oscars don't usually do that for the main categories. I think the three animated films that will end up being nominated will probably be Onward, Soul and Wolfwalkers, but we'll see. They clearly liked Soul if it's shortlisted for Best Picture, Original Screenplay and three more categories.

By the way, Mulan, Hamilton and The Mandalorian were also each nominated for a SAG award. Mulan for "Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture", The Mandalorian for "Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Comedy or Drama Series" and Hamilton in the "Male Actor in a Television Movie or Miniseries" category (Daveed Diggs).

I didn't think two Pixar SparkShorts titles would make the shortlist. Though I watched them all recently and they're quite good, so I'm not completely surprised. There are also many Disney films in the Visual Effects category.

Well, this is a first. Paramount has chosen to remove the new Spongebob movie from Oscar consideration. We've previously seen entries being deemed ineligible by the Academy, but never before has a studio removed a film of theirs voluntarily after the list of contenders had been announced. I don't understand why Paramount would do such a thing. Do they wish to submit it for next year's Oscars instead? I'm not sure they'll be allowed to do that as the Academy hasn't announced yet if they'll permit VOD titles again. Besides, they have a higher chance of getting nominated this year since next year will be much more competitive and crowded for feature animation.

It wasn't a surprise, but I think it was actually the best animated film of the year, so I'm glad it won. And the score was very original too. I think it's very likely Soul will take home these same two awards at the Oscars.
