Why do you dislike it? It's funny, emotional, educational in cinema history, and features great performances from Johnny Depp and Martin Landau. I'm surprised you don't like it.

I rented it (only) once back in like 2000 when I was a jerk / punk teen. Although, I was also alternating at the time with John Waters' oeuvre (and not because I was attempting to test my gag reflex) as well as Argento (point being - really, don't trip up on the names, they're not that important just personal factual obligation - that I was expanding the definition of art film in my horizons of whatever movies meant to me previously). It just plain bored the living daylights out of me. Which is fair considering how abused, underrated, and overlooked Burton's Batman movies and Edward Scissorhands had been (by people who weren't "like" tortured souls or seriously visual-minded artists / art lovers) because they were too violent or not classy, standard bio-pic'y enough accounts of a character's life. Good on him for wanting to broaden his reputation with the critical community. But the previous movies meant too much to me. This movie felt, at least tonally, like he was selling out.
Of course, that's me. And I'm fully willing to accept that it looks like (from an outsider's point of view) violence and ultra-dark toned films seem to break through to me more than light toned films which are so tastefully playful with subtlety and nuance that it all goes over my head.
