This is the perfect time for me to remark on the racism...
First, I never knew, or rather I forgot, that their were african american peopel in Dumbo, and if that line is really replying to them and not a monkey as their ae many animals about....wow. Why would they ever refer to themselves as...is that them making fun of each other? What?
Then, I do not think the crows are really racist. I don't get how the crows are a negative stereotype. They aren't stupid or anything. They are in many ways more clever than Dumbo ot Timothy, and they lend their magic feather.
On a related note, what about The Jungle Book makes anyone think King Louis and his subjects are supposed to be represent black people? What lyrics or anything ever suggests this?

Still nothing on the music, though. I really hope it's not Stevie Wonder still. This is going to be problematic enough without adding in a composer who's never written for stage / screen.

I would say this could be decent if Julie Taymor did it, but she is currently wrecking Broadway and her career with Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark! At least we'll always have the fantastic Lion King musical...

No, it probably wouldn't. Julie Taymor deals with the abstract. Elephants on Parade is pretty fucking abstract if you ask me.
But I hope this doesn't get made. too many shitty broadway productions being made. Dumbo would be dumb. <strike>You see what I did there..</strike>. Especially if they have the idea to cast blacks as the crows.(though that would be quite lulzy.

I'm sure they could make songs for this, and maybe even do something a la TLK to make it work, but...it's such a weird choice. I can't picture this outside of an animated film. 
I expect they would do the music with everyone else singing, and Dumbo silent (that's basically how the movie worked, with everyone talking about him). Or maybe Dumbo would only sing when he finally flies at the end? Corny.

Either way, I doubt Julie's gonna be back on Broadway soon.

No thank you. Disney needs to stop investing in stage musicals. Just because it worked a few times doesn't mean it's a winning formula.

They don't need to stop investing in stage musicals, they just need to realize that throwing all their movies up on stage is not in itself a good idea.pinkrenata wrote:No thank you. Disney really dodged a bullet here. Everything about this project sounded like a disaster waiting to happen.

“‘Dumbo’ is problematic,” Schumacher says. “There is so much in it that is uncomfortable” — starting with the black crows, which are delightful, as many kids who see the movie will tell you, but racist. Another problem was that there are only a handful of songs. “There just wasn’t enough music,” Schumacher says.
But if a great director like Daldry wants to do it, you try. Schumacher brought in Michael Chabon, who wrote “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay,” to do the script. Schumacher says he also thought Randy Newman could write the music.
Disney was developing “Dumbo” — with lots of ideas involving puppets, as Julie Taymor did so brilliantly with “The Lion King” — when Schumacher went to see an early preview of “War Horse” at the National Theatre in London, with its breathtaking, lifesize horse puppets.
“The moment those horses came out, I realized, it has been done,” says Schumacher. And so “Dumbo” was shelved.

I can see this going to the Pinnochio root with one run at the National Theater and that's it. This would not do good as a Broadway show in the slightest.
