er...perhaps just show your emotions by spontaneously bursting into singing/dancing while walking down the street? :P

I mean, my life is a one-man musical. I actually do burst out into song when walking down the street. And given that I attend a liberal arts school, chances are good that at any given time at least five other people will join me.

That's so cool! I go to a conservative art school so everyone is just quite and told to draw/paint/sculpt ect like everyone else.

At a public high school? Really? I'd wind up dead... not to mention people would put videos on YouTube for the sole purpose of making fun of it

I realize the point of musicals is to use songs instead of dialog... that is, when they actually have a topic! You know how many stupid/pointless songs from musicals there are?
I like musicals like Phantom of the Opera... the singing actually works, it doesn't just fill time in the story. I guess I really just don't like the line-dancing in unison type, I realize they all have singing

Not to mention, the songs in some musicals just annoy the crap out of me... Like in Grease... I don't even remember what that movie is about but I remember hating the music so much I couldn't stand to pay very close attention. Now, shows like Monty Python's Spamalot... Those are good, as it's not singing the whole time (Seriously, some of these musicals are like operas with a couple minutes' dialog)

And I dunno, is there something different about the Disney animated "musicals"? Like TLM/BatB/Aladdin/TLK... I actually like all those movies, and I liked TLK and BatB's Broadway counterparts. But yet, I hate HSM. It's just stupid, cheesy, and pointless.

Okay first of all: High School Musical was a TV MOVIE. The Phantom of the Opera is a Broadway musical that has been running for twenty years. If you expect High School Musical to even COMPARE to Phantom, you have some issues.

I don't want to offend in any way, but seriously how does that work? Art is a freedom and should be expressed in any way possible. I mean, i know art is in the eye of the beholder but i can't imagine how a conservative art school works. I almost imagine that there are some sort of boundries and art shouldn't have that...

I went to a liberal arts school (Millikin University), and it used to be joined with the Presbyterian Church. At some point (I think it was the early 90's) they seperated from the church. In part because of the way it was almost pushing itself on the student's art, which didn't float well with some professors. In the end it made Millikin's art program a lot stronger, now it boasts one of the better theatre and music departments in the nation. In fact (as I've said a few times before) it's the university that Jodi Benson and Sierra Boggess are from.

Being that I have a theatre degree myself now, I guess I'm just overall curious as to how going to a conservative art school is like.

Oh and did i hear someone mention a little night music. Will Glynis Johns singing send in the clowns do the job? I thought as much.

Lyrics:

Isn't it rich?
Are we a pair?
Me here at last on the ground,
You in mid-air.
Send in the clowns.

Isn't it bliss?
Don't you approve?
One who keeps tearing around,
One who can't move.
Where are the clowns?
Send in the clowns.

Just when I'd stopped opening doors,
Finally knowing the one that I wanted was yours,
Making my entrance again with my usual flair,
Sure of my lines,
No one is there.

Don't you love farce?
My fault I fear.
I thought that you'd want what I want.
Sorry, my dear.
But where are the clowns?
Quick, send in the clowns.
Don't bother, they're here.

Isn't it rich?
Isn't it queer,
Losing my timing this late
In my career?
And where are the clowns?
There ought to be clowns.
Well, maybe next year.

That's why it's called a joke. It doesn't. There's no such thing.

That sounds rough. I have a friend across town who goes to a moderate art school, where he's allowed to do what he wants, then the professors warp it to fit their standards. It's very soul crushing.

...they compare in the sense that neither is anywhere near as good as their respective fan bases seem to think they are, and both share an amount of popularity disproportionate to the overall quality.

I'm not a Phantom fan, I'm just saying that as much as you bash it, you know it's...for lack of a greater word, better than High School Musical.

Eh, I dunno. They're on pretty equal footing as far as I'm concerned. Neither one is particularly good, but they're both okay in small doses so long as you're far away from the fan base.

Depends on what you mean by Fan Base. First off, I have never seen it on Broadway. Last time it was playing near me I was too young. The only one I saw was the movie adaptation - but I have the original Broadway soundtrack, and seeing as how the music is the same, I get the gist of it.

But yeah. I *liked* the show, I'm not obsessed with it. Kinda like how I like Star Wars, but I didn't dress up as Chewbacca and go wait in line to see a midnight showing of Revenge of the Sith.

I know HSM is a TV movie - that's probably another reason why it sucks. Not to mention, it gives little kids false hopes for when they get to high school :(
So yeah I help with the theatre productions... but that doesn't mean you go through school singing and dancing and working as a team like that. It just doesn't happen. Plus, if the songs were even good, then it may be even remotely watchable...

...I didn't think any kid watching it was seriously thinking that high school was going to be an actual musical, no matter how young they were. Children are surprisingly pretty good at determining reality. As a child, I could still watch a movie without thinking "Boy, it's great the real world is just like this." If they're that stupid, they deserve to be disappointed.

^first of all, I can't even remember thinking that the world was nearly as complex as it is when I was little.

Secondly, I saw the broadway Phantom, and I never considered it at all a bad show. It's a good one. HSM, on the other hand, is watchable, but now the hate seems to be rubbing off on me.

To compare high school crapycal with The Phantom of the Opera is like comparing in speed a tricycle and a F1....
