"No, no, Princess Giselle is not really a princess," he mumbled, wiping his mouth with a twenty-dollar bill. "We're not sure how that confusion got started. However, I can tell you we are additionally looking into making Lindsay Lohan's character in 'Mean Girls' a Princess. I mean, Lindsay was in 'Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen' then 'Mean Girls', so it's like six degrees of Kevin Bacon, right? Nice and legal."
When informed by a reporter that the law does not work the way he thinks it does, Lasseter promptly killed and consumed the reporter just to prove a point.

That makes me think of the Gloop family in the 70's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie, porking out on pancakes at a resturant while being interviewed because the parents' son Augustus found a Golden Ticket. At one point, the kid's dad ate the head off a microphone some reporter held near his face.
EDIT- Anyway back on topic: I hope after the 50th anniversary edition (if there happens to be one, which at the rate Disney's going there
will be one), they give this movie a long rest in the vault and pull out a different movie to fuss over for a while.

I like how the thread started bashing the decision to release Mary Poppins again, then started bashing the cover, then the Disney Princess line, then John Lasseter and all of it got mashed together rather nicely.
Anyone that thought Disney fans were nice and quiet need to visit UD
.

Thanks for the information, tlc38tlc38. If the new DVD release of Poppins is going to contain the same print of the film that was on the 40th anniv version, I'm glad there is not going to be a blu-ray release of it at this time. There were issues with both picture and sound in it.
Since they are waiting for the blu-ray until a later time, that may give more credit to the rumour that Disney is reconstructing the film from the original elements. I sure hope it's true. It would make an amazing looking HD version if they did that. The raw footage of Mary Poppins on the extras disc is spectacular looking. It seems logical that they would go back to the original raw elements considering all the effort that was put into the recent Sleeping Beauty release. I'm sure they want their classic films to look the very best they can before releasing them to HiDef.

Well, this is kind of good news for me. I don't own a copy of Mary Poppins so I'll wait for this 45th anniversary DVD to come out. I just really wish it could've been on Blu!
Maybe in 5 more years we'll get a 50th anniversary edition. Knowing Disney they'll release it on DVD only.

I'll chime in with the chorus here. As an owner of the 2-disc 40th Anniversary Edition DVD of Mary Poppins, I don't see any good reason to buy the 45th Anniversary Edition. I care about the movie, not the musical.

I'd have been very surprised to see Poppins announced for BD so soon. The nature of the special visual effects and their optical compositing make Poppins a special challenge for restoration. If the studio possesses all the raw elements and deems it necessary to subject them separately to high-res scanning for digitally re-compositing certain scenes---that's considerable extra work above and beyond the average restoration. On BD on today's consumer displays, some segments could conceivably show more information than has even been seen in theatrical presentation before (which some would find glorious while others declare heresy).
Tron is also going to be a labor-intensive restoration.
Quality presentation on BD does not come quickly, and the studio is essentially having to start from scratch.
It is only since 2006 that we have the infrastructure to do full film resolution restorations in 4k. To this point there have been very few.

...a rough rule of thumb would be that just about all HD masters produced prior to 5 years out, should/will have to be *redone*, or else the Blu-ray home media edition will reveal past unforeseen deficiencies.
In fact, a lot of the stuff that was HD mastered as recently as 3 years ago will have to be redone.
There are no *standards* in the industry (and I wouldn’t hold my breath for any) but, in general, many of the studios (or the post houses they contract) are employing better and better common *good* practices as the tech people from different studios have more discussions amongst themselves……….during formal as well as informal meetings.
As an aside, last month Disney recently started 4K scanning all their titles from the 1930’s -1950’s which by extension will eventually result in new universal HD masters that can be used for both home media video (Blu-ray) as well as broadcast television.

We would get to see Peter Ellenshaw's artwork in much finer detail. I for one would love it.

I have not seen this movie entirely, but I would not buy the 45th Anniversary Edition if the 2 Disc Special edition is still available.

I like this cover a lot more than the previous, although I still am not happy about this release. I'd much rather see a new Pete's Dragon, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, or 2-Disc Enchanted than this (i know i'm so preaching to the choir about that too
).
I do see a purpose of releasing this though, the Broadway show probably only has another year in it. I would expect this to either be a farewell to the broadway show (since pretty much the only new material is based on it), or it might boost it's popularity and make it last a bit longer.
In the end I'll probably pick this up because I'll want the Broadway featurettes.

I think that the new picture of Mary is better than the one on the last cover posted, but I still don't like how they have the penguins dancing with all the chimney sweeps...that's just false advertising.

How is it false advertising??? the pegiuns are one of the memories people have bout Mary Poppins, as for me when I think of Mary Poppins I remember Bert and the "Spoonful of Sugar" sequence. The cover looks alil too modern, I really like the 2004 edition cover, very subtle and calm.

I said it's like false advertising because the penguins aren't in the "Step in Time" number, but the cover makes it look like they are. It's not even a big issue- it's just cover art!- but it bothers me!
