Gandalf wrote:I'm fairly picky with my movie collection. I have no intention of getting a new DVD of a film that I already own twice (the old DVD and the original VHS). Here's some ideas for what they could include to make this treatment better than last time's:
  • 1. Broadway Musical Feature (90-120 minutes at least)
    2. Alternate Scene: Extended Prologue
    3. Deleted Song: Invention Convention
    4. Deleted/Extended Scene: Gaston/Gaston (Reprise)
    5. Other Deleted Scenes (they have to have at least one or two)
6.Audio Commentary with Voice Cast (Paige O'Hara, Robby Benson, Angela Lansbury, David Ogden Stiers, Richard White, and Jesse Corti)
    7. Tribute to Jerry Orbach
    8. Extra Short Film: Kingdom of Kindness (supposed to have been released on the Princess Fairy Tales line, but apparently lost forever. Would make a better bonus to "Belle's Magical World").
    9. New music video (you know it's gonna happen)
    10. Original color schemes
    11. 3-D version of the film (most likely will not include the Work in Progress version, sorry folks)
    12. Newly animated "Home" from Broadway Musical

Here's what I would like to see:

1. All the sub-standard animation scrapped and re-drawn from scratch. All the Townspeople, Belle and the bookman when she enters the town library, Belle and her father inside her father's basement...on and on it goes....etc. etc.

2. An apology to Walt Disney for the scene with Gaston, Le Fou, and the Asylum director in the Inn, as its almost shot for shot plagiarised from Pinocchio.

3. Fixing the confusing timeline of the Prince's age in the film.

4. Le Fou thrown out and reanimated, re-designed, and re-voiced.

5. Scrapping all the underwear and cross-dressing gags.

6. A sincere admission from the film's producers and Michael Eisner that they know this is in no way "the best animated feature film" ever made, and that they have been promoting and selling that idea in order to sell tickets and units.

I'd buy that.

1 and 3 - I'd agree with.

2, 4 and 5 - a little bit over the top. Besides, that "Pinocchio" scene was supposed to be an homage. What's next, re-animate Laverne's "Birds" reference?

And as for No. 6 - they do it with all their movies, BatB is no exception.

Also, Walt's movies are nowhere near perfect as people make them out to be, as evidenced by these shots from "Sleeping Beauty" (taken from DCP).

Look at the door handle:

Now, why didn't they fix that for the PE?

Honestly! Beauty and the beast is by no means a complete success when it comes to animation (The whole scene after Belle returns and the villagers try to commit her father could have been drawn better), but it is by no means the worst. Take a closer look at it's predecessor, TLM. Don't get me wrong, I adore TLM but there are some scenes/moments in that movie that are bordering on terrible - for instance the "Look. He's breathing. he's so beautiful" moment. And speaking of the villagers, they aren't half as bad as the wedding party on the barge . But who am I to criticize. Afterall, there's more to a disney classic than it's visual animation qualities. There's the more important aspect of story, and BATB has that, along with music, and disney magic in buckets!

Right on! That's exactly why "Chicken Little" isn't a classic and "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Little Mermaid" are!

I think Beauty and the Beast will be my first Blu ray purchase in 2010 lol. I have to have every format of this film since it's my favorite animated Disney movie of all time. :) 8) (I am doing this with Aladdin as well since it's my second close to # 1 favorite as well.)

(I just found out my brother ordered my niece and nephew a PS3 and it's in my moms closet! :D )

I don't mind them adding new sequences (especially something like Human Again since it was part of the original plan) as long as the original theatrical version is still available, but to ask them to reanimate scenes that aren't "good enough?" Ugh. They've already "fixed" scenes in the so-called "original" versions of B&tB and TLK on DVD, and that's more than enough to annoy me. I'm not complaining too loudly as it is since the changes are relatively insignificant, but where the hell are we supposed to draw the line? Why not reanimate the whole freakin' movie and pretend that's what the artists actually created in 1991?

I think it's an insult to the those who worked on the original; flaws are not only subjective, but are more a part of the film than the grain people tend to go on and on about. :p

There used to be this clip available where you can see the changed animation of Cogsworth.

Does anyone know where I can find that one?

Oh, I already found it:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bZzxxBZUD-o

I don't understand this. And looking at it, I notice even more how "saturday morning cartoony" the imax version looks in general!!

And where are the details in his design?
Where are the backgrounds?
Where is his shadow?

Yes, but I agree with some when I say that the animation in the SE is much more appropriate to the character.

I disagree. The colour issue aside, Cogsworth's head movements look far too elasticated. His head stretches way too much when he says "why?". They really cheapened, not just that moment but the whole film. but I haven't time to rant now. I'm baking a crumble. :P

I hope they don't ruin my FAVORITE Disney Princess movie (she's taken the top spot from Aurora) and use a stupid Disney channel star and ruin the songs "Belle" or "Beauty and the Beast". I want them to KEEP the HUMAN AGAIN sequence (I actually LIKE it). And please please please please keep the original music video starring Celine and Peabo. They were the singers, not Emily or Tiffany or Selena or Miley or Ashley or Meaghan. The song doesn't need a "rock and roll" sound to it. Its a ballad. "Belle" is fine as it is, too.

Well, I'm pretty sure "Belle" wont be the one to be rerecorded. They already confirmed the Human Again sequence to be in the new PE release, though.

The Rescuers Down Under preceded Beauty and the Beast, and it was stunning. That movie has animation that stomps Beauty and the Beast right through the floor. Beauty and the Beast was an Eisner rush job to get the movie ready to compete with Universal and Spielberg for the third time (An American Tail II). The move needed several weeks to fix, but they had to meet the deadline. I don't blame the animators for the rush job, I blame Eisner. Disney met the release date, and they won the battle with ATII: Fievel Goes West, but now we have to live with the consequences.

Okay, where did all this sudden BatB bashing come from? I remember when people were all over the movie and loved it. Suddenly it seems as if many people have started almost hating it and are desperately looking for things that are wrong with it.

Maybe BatB was rushed and like in every movie there are some goofs, but it still is one wonderful movie and all this PE bashing is getting ridiculous. Stop nit-picking, please!

Eisner wasn't in charge of the Disney Studios then. It was Katzenberg.

Amen to that! There is bashing, but this is ridiculous! It should be banned!

I've noticed an increase in the B&tB bashing as well. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any huge B&tB fans here to take up for the movie and balance the hate out anymore (like darth_deeto, etc.). Or maybe the hate is why all the big B&tB fans left? Not that I'd be surprised, because I've noticed B&tB fans tend not to be as strong-minded as TLM fans (which also gets bashing and snide comments all over this forum).

Overall, I think all the princess films get bashed, but B&tB in particular because haters are infuriated that anyone would dare call it the "greatest animated film."

For the most part, I hate to read the opinions of people who point out all the bad things with a film and ignore the good (however few they think there are). I, personally, don't think there is an utterly horrible Disney film, so, yes, I think there's plenty of good entertainment to be found in B&tB. The animation is definitely not up to par to Disney's older films (or even more current ones), but it's not so obviously inconsistent or "cartoony" to be unwatchable. And I personally think that the movie has a great cast of characters that more than make up for its failings in animation.

I still love my Beauty and the Beast! I will never stop loving this movie. It is my favorite animated movie of all time. I have no reason to fight and bicker about it though. I am just upset on how they reanimated the film and changed a lot of things in it. Everyone else has a right to be mad as well. Still in all the movie is amazing and I want every format out there lol.

I believe Matt just spoke for me. :) I'm happy with the DVD, and that's all that matters.
