^I understand that. But there's gotta be *some* limit to today's technology.

Nothing worth canceling a project over though. On a Bugs Life there was concern about not being able to put as many ants on screen at once as John wanted. They got around this limitation of course, but even if they couldn't, the movie still would have been made. Monsters inc, they took on the hard task of Fur, but its not like they wouldn't have made the movie if he had to be hairless. These are just minor details easily worked around if needed. We have even less limitations than we did in the 90s-early 2000s, so I can't think of a single example of a game changing technical problem they couldn't overcome. I think the days where movie ideas are greatly compromised or canceled due to any tehcnial limiation are over. at least when it comes to big budget studios like Pixar/Disney.

also, the movie never even made it into acutal production as far as I know. this is where they would run into the technicla problems. they were still in the writing, storyboarding, and concept art phase. Nothing had been locked down yet.

^they could've been doing developmental tests.

And yep, I memorized all that info right from the source

Now, what about story issues? Maybe the way it was going wasnt good enough for them? Or maybe they just had one massive case of Writer's Block.

Sad to see this beautiful artwork and this movie abandoned. Pixar's possible future: Cars 3, Monster's, Inc. 2, Toy Story 4, Finding Nemo 3, etc, etc;)

Just look at us! We should have more faith. Because of a couple sequels, we're already assuming they'll only do franchise films. :headshake:

I'm sure one day they will give us the reason as to why this was cancelled?

Or better yet, actually make it!

Alpha and Omega talkback

Funny how this, Newt, and Rio has similar story plots about two animals being placed together by humans to populate or reproduce… Maybe that was why Pixar shelved the project?
I’m pretty sure that is EXACTLY the reason Pixar shelved Newt. Rather than attempt (and yes, we can assume that in likelihood succeed) to top two other projects already in full production with similar stories, Pixar decided wisely step aside.

Yeah, funny...like they didn't copy the storyline on purpose. No, no, that's never happened. Antz...

I'm quite surprised that Pixar is still commencing with production of "Brave" even at the risk of baring some-to-few similarities with "How to Train Your Dragon".

I was referring to the Scottish mythological setting here, if we're lucky, perhaps it wont go any farther than that.

Katzenberg transferred to Dreamworks after quitting (or getting fired?) from Disney. There he put Antz into full production, pressured the whole staff to work quickly, and got it released before A Bug's Life. All to try and make the Pixar name look bad.

I highly doubt they would make Newt to copy Rio's and Alpha & Omega's story, only to cancel it later. Waste of talent and money.

You must've read me wrong. I meant it the other way, that Pixar was the one being copied. Of course, with Rio and Alpha and Omega coming out so soon, maybe they didn't copy it? I just think it's suspicious--"funny"--that three films with the same type of story come around the same time (with Antz being a previous example of Pixar having been copied).

I'm sorry for making that mistake!

It is hard for me to assume anyone copied anyone. Has there been news within the last years about animal extinction? All three studios could have taken it and made a story around it.

I just don't see how this would hurt Pixar in any way if they went ahead and make Newt. The Incredibles is a LOT like Fantastic Four but very few people cared to criticize Pixar copied. I guess I just really want to see this film more than Cars 2 or Monsters 2. :P

Lasseter Confirms Rio as Reason for Newt's Cancellation
http://movies.ign.com/articles/116/1165409p1.html
We recently had the chance to exclusively interview Cars 2 director and Pixar Chief Creative Office John Lasseter, during which time the subject of Newt, a now-shelved project, came up.

"We've put movies into development and some get further than others and then we feel like things just aren't quite ready we put them to the side and that's just been put on a shelf and we'll see where that goes in the future," said Lasseter. "It's story was very similar to a movie that's out in theaters right now with a blue parrot. Oh my! Wow, we were like … no, there was no … great minds think alike, I guess. It was really pretty similar."

Oh! So it wasn't canceled just because they couldn't figure out how tell a story about two blue-footed newts repopulating their species and keep the movie a family film.

Well, Rio was great, so at least, it wasn't cancelled because of a bad film.

I disagree greatly; it was filled with generic charcters, the romance between the ornithologist and Blu's owner went nowhere, and the humour was unoriginal and awful. Newt probably would've been a hundred times better.

That's too bad, I was actually looking forward to Newt. And the concept art was beautiful.
