I own the VHS they released in the 80s... I remember going to see it in the 80s as well with my mom...I love that movie!

I'm pretty sure I've seen it several times, including possibly a theatrical re-release when I was small (1960s). It was on Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color at least once, wasn't it? I've never figured out what the problem is, either. If Uncle Remus was a "Stepin Fetchit" type of character it would be different, but he's honest, humorous, and loves children. What's so negative about that?

I have not seen it either. I have found DVDs on eBay supposedly from Euro Disney. The case even has a green triangle with a white U. But the DVD is encoded for Region 1, NTSC with no subtitles.

I people have asked this question before, but I forgot the answer. Has Disney released Song of The South on DVD in any region? Or only on Laserdisk and VHS?

I saw Song of the South in the 70's but I do not remember it that well

I own a japanese pressing of the movie on laserdisc. I bought it just before they went out of print. I absolutely love this movie! A friend of mine is making me a DVD copy from it so i can watch it more readily as my laserdisc player has been in storage and i brought it out so he can make the transfer for me.

I do hope that Disney does release it someday officially here in the U.S.A.

It hasn't been released on DVD at all, and even on previous formats, it's only been available in non-US/Canadian territories, such as video (Europe and Japan) and laserdisc (Japan and Hong Kong).

This is the only film that I've gone through the trouble of ordering a PAL VHS from the U.K. over the net, then paying even more to get a "prefessional service" to convert to NTSC, just so I finally see it. And hell - this was several years ago, when I hardly knew a thing about regional video differences! And unfortunately I had no deathie around then to slap some sense (and basic facts) into me - I had to educate myself.

It truly is a wonderful film, though - especially the animated parts. I just can't fathom how such a film has warranted so much controversy - it's hardly that stereotypical - and it ain't like young kids will pick up such "harmful" ideas from it anyway.

Here's hoping that the rumors of a 2006 release, or sometime thereof, are more truth than hearsay... ^_^

I agree! I actually found that Disney show "The Proud Family" much more "offensive" to black people(and white people) more than Song of the South. And yet they still show that show and not Song in the South!

Just out of curiosity, just how do you convert an NTSC tape to PAL? Here in the UK, almost every VCR is multi-region...

I have no clue about the actual process, but from what I do know (damn... I hope deathie doesn't see this... ), the service I used involved playing back the PAL tape and recording it onto a new, NTSC tape - then giving me both copies. Maybe it is as simple as that... hu noz!

I think some sort of "converter" is involved in the process. You probably wouldn't be able to do it just with two consumer VCRs.

i just downloaded a full version of song of the south. not familiar with american history. i dont see what the racist fuss is about. but its a sad movie. anyone wants it? it's 902MB.

The only part of Song of the South I've seen was a song segment from a sing-a-long video I got when I was like 4 or 5 years old. Never really liked what little I saw of it.

Great movie... The conversion is a little more difficult then just getting two VCR's but I won't get into the details.

I have both the NTSC version and the original PAL version. I actually just got a brand NEW sealed PAL version in the mail today. A perfect addition to my Disney collection.

Follow-Up to Rumored Song of the South "Sequel"

Back in May 2004 I received a few reports that actor Wayne Brady was involved in doing some voice acting for the character Brer Bear in what was rumored to be a Song of the South sequel/remake of sorts. This follow-up is long overdue, but better late than never!

As it turns out, Wayne Brady IS involved in vocal acting for a character named Brer Bear, but in a film completely independent from Disney. While the film has some Disney ties (Executive Producer is former Disney artist Tad Stones, Byron Vaughn is the Director, and Mary Thorne is the Line Producer), the film is "strictly through NBC Universal" according to Ruben Chavez, Lead Background Stylist of the Universal Cartoon Studios. The film about Brer Rabbit is going to be a direct-to-video release, the first of its kind for the studio that isn't based off of a feature film.
