Disney Villain wrote:Disneykid, I agree with you wholeheartedly on this. Also Jasmine has been slipping in popularity lately, despite her new story in Enchanted Tales. If Enchanted becomes majorly successful (which I have no doubt, it will be) then Giselle will, without a doubt, be added to the official Disney Princess line. This could mean Jasmine getting axed from the line.
Sorry Disney Villain, I hope you don't think I'm being flippent with this post, because its not my intent. But why is Jasmine's popularity slipping. Ask yourself why.

She is independent. She is not afraid to speak her mind. She is strong and in control.

How can her popularity be slipping when Sleeping Beauty's for example isn't. Jasmine has character. Aurora has not. Not at all. Not a sausage of an identity beyond her visual apperance.

The only reason I can see is because Jasmine is Arab. To me, I see hints of racism in the general public's preferences.
I doubt its racism, really.

Jasmine is in no way the only independant princess,
belle, ariel and even cinderella (who is even sarcastic at one moment! :P )
try and think in terms of a young girl (who is being marketed these products)
I assume a majority will go for what they assume the most pretty princess.
Aurora (although she doesnt really bring much else to the table) is very pretty- thus girls may choose a notebook with her over a notebook with jasmine for instance.

whoa, this is interesting.

well I absolutely love Alice in Wonderland, it's one of the few Disney movies I'm always quoting (mostly thanks to Cheshire Cat). But as for myself, I'm kind of bummed Aladdin(my all time favorite) is being dropped, and Alice already has a nice set already, I mean what more could they possibly add?? But if this is true I would love to have the Platinum Edition.

I'm still kind of mind boggled why movies like Sleeping Beauty that already have great editions are getting Platinum status. They should at least save them for last...in my opinion anyway.

Does that answer your question, jeremy? ;)

Wow! all that was dropped from laser disc?? GEEZ! it makes DVD features seem not up to par...but what the heck laser disc? I've never even seen or heard of that before I came to UD...do they still sell Laser Discs?

But anyways that definitely answers my question lol thanks bambi and DisneyKid :)

Well it seems to me there still a lot of neato stuff to add...so hopefully we will see them on the new release of Alice in Wonderland and not just a rehash of the ME with an all new game!

While it's nice to have the special features, don't feel obligated to seek out a laser disk. They're very cumbersome.

remember not that long ago when they were talking about making a live action version of alice in wonderland?
i wonder if that's still in the works...

I really like my 2 disc Alice, but I agree that a "making of" and commentary is essential and the inclusion of all that stuff left of the laserdisc would be awesome!

So I have no problem with Disney expanding the Platinum line to include Alice, and I agree COMPLETELY with everyone who suggested DUMBO for the 16th Platinum title if one is added.

Dumbo is my very favorite DAC, and I'd love to see it get the long overdue deluxe 2-disc tratment, which could expand greatly on Big Top Edition as well as restore the missing trailers that were on the 60th Aniversary edition.

For that matter, I'd love to see each and every DAC and Pixar film get the deluxe 2-disc treatment full of suplements. They can call them whatever they want - platinum, ambrosia, copper, etc :)

Lastly, for those wishing for reissues of the 2 Latin American DACs (Saludos and Cabelleros) and the 4 "package" DACs (MMM, MT, FFF, Ichabod and Mr. Toad) I also completely agree!

Not only to present supplements more relevent to the films in question, and in some cases better transfers - but ALSO to undue the damage caused by the edits that left Saludos and Melody Time flawed and Make Mine Music RUINED.

Saludos and 3 Cabs have been OOP for almost a year now so I am really hoping we hear something soon about those two.

If they get re-released UNCUT with even SOME of the bonuses found on the laserdisc, these would be FANTASTIC releases.

The Cabelleros are BIG at Epcot now with their appearance in the El Rio Del Tiempo makeover and frequent public meet and greets, so it would seem like good timing for a reissue...

The thing is though, Alice in Wonderland will never be a critically acclaimed film. It wasn't back in 1951, Walt hated it and it still isn't considered to be very good today.

I can sort of understand Disney's disappointment over Aladdin's sales, but replacing it with a poorly received film like Alice in Wonderland isn't gonna do the trick. If they're gonna replace it with anything, try Dumbo. Wich is much more beloved.

I don't know why you people think that Jasmine is underrated, she appear in almost every Disney Princess stuff, okay, you don't see her face everywhere like Cinderella,Aurora,Belle or Ariel but she is in almost everything, many marchandise forget some Princesses (for example Ariel,Belle,Snow White, even Aurora) and she is quite poplure (take Mulan and Pocahontas who are for example are underrated princesses,Jasmine appeared in every Disney Princess video game, they didn't appear even in one video game),she needs more attention (for example-when the Aladdin Platinum Edition came she had a few stuff (in the franchise, not a whole line in the franchise like Ariel and Cinderella and i think that Giselle will have too) and that's all, like i said, unlike Cinderella and Ariel) but she gets attention overall, she even get more then Snow White and if she gets more attention then the first heronie, that's something, isn't it?.
You know,i think that she didn't got a line when her Platinum Edition came out like Cinderella and Ariel when their Platinum Editions came out becouse they wanted to make with Cinderella (and Ariel, later) something new,Snow White and Belle didn't got whole lines when their Platinum Editions came, also let's not forget that Jasmine is the only Princess that isn't the film's hero (she's like Nala, she's not a damsle in distress but she isn't the film's hero either).

could the re-release have to do with the proposed Alice merchandise line (it was meant to be like Disney Fairies, Bunnies Dragons)?

How do we know that Aladdin wasn't a big seller?

Is there anyway to see the sales for each Platinum. I would be interested to know what exactly the market likes in terms of animated classics, for example are the older ones selling better than the new ones. If anyone has this information that would be great!

when do you guys think they'll start releasing a new line for blu ray? are they waiting for the format war to end before releasing anything? I certainly hope they don't wait untill the end of that release schedule. I wouldn't want to wait untill 2012 to see the first one. let alone my favorites. (Aladdin and lion king)
in theory they should already have the transfers ready now for all the current platinum's. I assume that they restored them in their originally resolution, so all they need to do is scale the master approprietly for blu ray release, and port over the dvd extras. they have their work cut out for them for their most popular animated films. and this time, movies like beauty and the beast wont be over compressed, due to having more space to work with.

Im thinking they may start out like they did with dvd, by releasing bare bones versions to tide people over as they did with the gold collection.

they could start releasing the not so classic (but will still sell just fine) movies such as Brother Bear, Lilo and Stitch, etc if they wish to wait for a format winner before taking the risk of going all out for blu ray.

I just hope it ain't too long before I can enjoy Aladdin and lion king in high def.

I think you're right... I think it is gonna be pretty much like the tranaition from VHS to DVD... When Disney started releasing DVDs they started by releasing their current movies - the ones that just premiered in theaters... Like Tarzan which was one of the first dvd releases... For the classisc they released the limited issues. That is probably what we will get first... they are already released their "current classics" Chicken Little and The Wild... So I'm guessing we will see the BD counterparts to the Limited Issue DVDs in the begining of 2008...

It's already been confirmed that Sleeping Beauty will be the first Blu-Ray animated classic (excluding Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons) October of 2008. I highly doubt Disney's going to release barebones BDs like the Limited Issues. While the Chicken Little and Meet the Robinsons BDs aren't much to write home about, they do contain some supplements, and let's not forget how packed the Pirates BDs are. With Sleeping Beauty as the first BD Platinum, I can't see Disney releasing a bunch of animated classic BDs shortly afterward with absolutely no features. Disney's smarter than that (even if they don't always show it). I suspect we'll see BDs of Gold Classic titles early 2009 or so, and more than likely, the first few titles will be the current re-releases of stuff like Robin Hood and Fox and the Hound.

As for a new collection, that's where things get messy. Sleeping Beauty has already been confirmed as a Platinum Edition, so obviously Pinocchio and Fantasia will follow suit, even on BD. They can't start a new collection with Snow White because the collection reboot overlaps with the collection ending (Pinocchio and Snow White both in 2008). I don't think Disney will want two prestigious collections on the market at the same time. It'll confuse consumers. So my guess is that the Platinum Collection is here to stay, at least until the series is completely out on BD (which won't be 2016 or so).

Well you know, adding more titles to the platinum series isn't necessarily a good thing coz your going to have to wait longer for the releases, so instead of feeling sorry that Aladdin is being under-rated I should have a huge grin on my face coz I'm not going to have to wait 5 years till they release it on Blu-ray ! BOO YA ! Disney PLEASE drop Beauty and the Beast from the platinum line ! :D
