I finally gave in and saw Transformers. It was pretty decent, I guess.

I have to give it up, this one was actually... well, entertaining. Not great - it was predictable, for the most part, and Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston's characters were wasted. But the kid playing the lead and his best friend, the girl who could control nature, were just great. And since the movie rests on their shoulders, it works pretty well. I give it... B

Help! - the fabulous 1965 movie from The Beatles is back on DVD with a great digital remastering of both picture and sound. What a joy this film is, and with seven top songs from the boys, this is a great addition to my collection. This time it is in a 2-disc set, with the second disc loaded with extras including a "lost" scene, a 'making of' documentary, and lots of other extras including some nifty Easter Eggs to find.

Atonement

I am not really sure about this one. The structure is genius, you never know where you stand, but at the same time the movie seems as if they didn't know what to do or which story to follow. It's too confused and moves extremely slow, but then again it is wonderful, beautiful and depressing.
It's okay, better than that, but "A very long engagement" by Jean-Pierre Jeunet is way better.

I'm watching Bewitched (2005) at the moment. I feel that it's extremely underrated and definitely deserves more credit. I may have said this before, but at least the writers didn't take the easy way out and clump a couple of episodes together from the series. They actually took the time to create a clever and unique plot. Not only that, but Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell surprisingly have great chemistry! I find it very entertaining.

Watched Ratatouille last night and loved it even more than I did in the theaters.

Last night I watched The Stepford Wives (2004). I think I may be one of the only people who thinks this version is just as good as the original. Visually, I thought it was stunning; almost Oscar-worthy! The acting was great, as well. Nicole Kidman, Matthew Broderick, and Bette Midler? I think those names speak for themselves.

Highly recommended.

Its pretty rare that I have time to watch movies but for Halloween, I did watch Mr. Toads Wild Ride/Ichabod - what's a Halloween without this classic, eh?

And now that my mom gave me all these classic Disney VHS tapes, I am starting to finally watch some of the older Disney films. I watched Beauty & the Beast and can see now why so many people rave about it, and I also watched the Xmas sequel (I forget the title) which I thought was pretty good, but I didn't think as good as the original (my mom likes it better than the original). I thought all the secondary animated characters (like Mrs. Pots, etc.) really made the 1st film so enchanting and there must have been a public consensus about this, since Disney has given them even bigger roles in the sequel.

Now my mom has watched most of the Disney movies that she gave me on VHS, which is great, because now I can talk to her about these films. (Unfortunately I get to them about 1 every 2 weeks) She said she cried when she watched Bambi, and agrees that it is a powerful environmental film.

Didn't you see the movie? The guys killed them and replaced them with robots. That actually happened in real life. So, those real actors are dead now, which is why only a programmed clone of each (well... maybe just Bette Midler's clone) would have the nerve to agree to do a such a disgraceful disservice as this movie.

Come on. I think we both know a good movie isn't made by gloss and nail polish alone. The whole thing was an extended commercial for make up and expensive clothes... It really spits in the face of everything the first movie was. Just the nature of it's big budget production was an insult to the first movie. The makers of this movie don't care about anything the first movie had to say. Which every remake really has to, or it's going to Movie Hell.




Evil Dead II: Dead by Dawn (1987)
I don't know why I've always been so hard on this movie. But it's just such a huge disappointment after the masterpiece that is the original. It has a few good BOO! jump-type scares. But then, you kick yourself for jumping at all because nothing in this movie looks that good, effects-wise, except for a wall that shoots blood and those living trees (which rock, by the way!). Basically, the opening is amazing (in terms of camera work), and then almost everything is downhill from there.

It's just a bunch of gags totally copied from the first movie. And they just don't look as good this time around. And they really copied everything- the entire scene of Ash descending the basement in the first 15 minutes (everything from the shot where Scotty jumps out, to the hanging gords), an exploding lightbulb, a bloody lightbulb, Ash taking Linda out to the work shed, the shot of his taking the chain off the door, the shot of the rat scuffling on a shelf, Ash pulling off a cloth where a chainsaw is mounted on the wall, Ash in front of the mirror, Ash re-loading his shotgun, Ash blowing his shotgun outside from the inside, the force crashing through the window in a bedroom at a woman's screaming figure, Linda reacting to the necklace, the scene of the evil dead taking human form to torture their loved ones, the creepy lullaby, the screaming zombie banging on the cellar door to bust through the chains, the "I'm alright now!" sequence, Cheryl tied up in the brush / branches.

Seriously... it's not as scary or as innovative as the first movie. It's kind of fun. But it's still disappointing. Except, yeah, the speeding, spinning camera moves were better here. That's all this one has over the original. And that's not enough. - C

Oh, I forgot about that one. Literally going down right now as The Worst Movie of 2007. Just barely beating Transformers out of the #1 slot. F from me.

The Jungle Book

I had forgotten how enjoyable this one was.

Getting Into Heaven (1969) 3/5. IMDb calls this film - "a pun-filled sex romp" - and I might have to agree with them. The writing was very sloppy, the acting was a little weak, and overall it was all the puns that made this film worthwhile. A little note to those who care: I am one of the stars of this film, and am trying to toot my own horn, I hadn't watched this in several years, and some friends were over and my wife brought this up as a film to watch for a good laugh. And that is what we all got - a good laugh.
