Coming to theaters this fall, Disney will release Enchanted, a classic princess fairytale with a modern day twist, starring Amy Adams, Patrick Dempsey and Susan Sarandon. The entertainment will continue as Sleeping Beauty is planned for re-release on DVD in 2008 and will be available on Blue Ray for the first time. In 2009, the highly anticipated release of The Princess and the Frog will introduce Disney's newest princess.

I remember reading this a while ago, so it's not a surprise. Even though I already have the special edition from a few years ago, I probably will get this one again, because the commentary was not included in the R2 version and may be added this time round. I hope they include more behind the scenes features. I would like the documentaries to be fairly neutral and include information on the negative aspects of the film and it's production - the hostility between Eyvind Earle and the rest of the studio, Frank Thomas' stress in animating the fairies manifesting itself in the form of a rash, the film's initially poor reception and so on. But, I know they won't.

I have to say that Pinocchio, the Citizen Kane of animated movies, is far more deserving of a release than Sleeping Beauty. However, I'm prepared to wait as long as we get some good, brand new features, galleries, documentaries and so on to do this film justice. And I do have a number of behind-the-scenes books and essays on the film (as well as the film itself) to keep me going until 2009. But it'd better be to the standard of the Aladdin and Snow White PEs.

But I must say I'm pleased that 101 Dalmatians is soon coming out, as has been known for some time. Despite its considerable commercial success, it's never been recognised as one of the most artistically brilliant Disney films - it's one of the very best in terms of unity of design, animation and writing. A film that got right everything that Sleeping Beauty got wrong (not that some aspects of Sleeping Beauty aren't beautiful as well).

It was on the market for a good 3+ years (November 2000 to January 2004), and by Disney's revised-in-2003 guidelines for OOP-ness (5 years instead of 10), it's due out again in 2009. So there's really nothing that's "taking so long" for a release, it's estimated to come out right on time. Unless you'd rather it come out in 2014.

Pinocchio is a thousand times better film than Sleeping Beauty. Can't believe we have to wait longer for it to come out when Sleeping Beauty already came out as really good 2-Disc set.

I knew I was afraid of this. As the time rolls on, I'm hoping that Pinocchio will be out by March 2009 or else......I will.....sigh nevermind that. I hope Disney will release it by that date.

As for 101 Dalmations, I will say I'm glad it stayed there.

As far as the Platinum Release of this movie, yeah it's almost a safe bet that some of the Special Edition extras will be kept. But maybe not all of them. Maybe they will actually get rid of some of the informative bonuses about the movie to make room for more kids' games and Disney Channel-related promos / ads. It wouldn't surprise me a bit.

I think when it comes to this being 'news,' it seems a bit of a cheat. Because now Disney doesn't have to work so hard on Pinocchio. I love Sleeping Beauty and all, one of my favorite Disney animated movies, and I like it better... but I don't think it should get a Platinum Edition release before something that doesn't have 1. Maybe Disney could go out on a limb here, and... I don't know... release them both at the same time. Or within the same 3 month span. Because even if they just copy the same Special Edition and give it a new cover... they're not doing anything new for the movie.


And yes, I feel like a colossal idiot for not buying the Special Edition when I saw it at Wal-Mart 1 day. I just didn't want to buy 1 and leave all the other movies feeling left out. Disney are some crafty (and devious) business-people. And I think their cold ways are starting to rub off on us.

BLASPHEMY!!

I'm actually hoping that for the Blu-ray releases that they keep the bonus features more geared toward adults.

After all - it's mostly adults who are extremely involved in movie releases as a genuine hobby that own Blu-ray players, I would guess (well, except for many PS3 owners.....).

Again, I'm all for the idea of releasing DVD's in two versions for every release - standard w/kiddie-fare bonuses, and special edition for the true movie collector.

Might Sleeping Beauty's format have anything to do with its rush to Blu-Ray? I'm pulling this out of my hat, but I think SB and Lady & the Tramp were the only animated features produced in widescreen while Walt was around. Maybe part of the reasoning, especially with the format wars still undecided, is to provide the consumer with content that will <u>fully</u> exploit all the expensive toys (HD TV, Blu-Ray player, minimum $1000 investment without considering the sound system) required to obtain the full Disney High Definition experience.

I mean, am I the only one who finds the black vertical bars watching a 4:3 movie on a widescreen television JUST as annoying as watching a widescreen movie on an analog TV? All that wasted space! If only your screen could reconfigure its available surface area to fit the program...

I'd really rather get <i>Pinnochio</i> (I really liked Magic Mirror's characterization as the Citizen Kane of animation). But you gotta admit that even if SB's story doesn't grab you, it will <i>look</i> absolutely AMAZING in hi-def: it's a stunning-looking film, with some of the best production design the studio's ever put out.

When our last TV died a little more than a year ago we figured we'd step up and be ready for HD; we managed to get a name-brand 31" HDTV for about $550 plus tax. The catch: it's neither plasma nor LCD; for all its 21st-century picture, it's powered by tubes rooted firmly in the 20th. That means it's really deep, really heavy, and we had to buy a new piece of furniture just to have somewhere to put it. The locally broadcast HD programming we get off the air on the digital antenna looks fantastic, but we'll probably have to wait until Christmas 2008 to make the move to Blu-Ray.

Can they really add anything more to my 3-disc <i>Fantasia Anthology</i>?

I'm personally hoping that the 16-minute doc and all the short featurettes simply get re-edited with some new interviews and vintage footage to form a longer and more in-depth documentary. Also, as Kelvin loves pointing out and I'm eternally grateful for, both the Peter Pan and Sleeping Beauty commentaries are made up of outtakes from the interview sessions for the short documentaries on each (they'll be circa 1997/1998), so we could always see those re-integrated into the documentary as well. Doing a quick check of the Sleeping Beauty disc, the short featurettes (well, 4 featurettes, the live-action footage, and the widescreen/p&s comparison) are only 15 minutes, and coupled with the short doc, that's already 31 minutes, and I know there's plenty of valuable soundbites from the commentary. They could take about 10-15 minutes of the best-of-the-best from the commentary and edit that into the other 31 minutes.

Then why don't you just watch them with the picture stretched to 16:9 like most people I know do? Now, that's annoying!

To answer your question: No, you're not the only one. Both types of black bars annoy me just as much = not at all.

Lol---actually you <i>did</i> need to remind me. Been so long since I'd watched it, I'd forgotten. I was under the impression my TV's 3rd picture shape setting would fill my screen with SB the way it does with, oh, say, most of my Ghibli DVDs. I'll have to look at the presentation ratios and make a note of which my screen actually is.

A blu-ray release that might truly tempt me into spending money I don't have for a player" <i>Mary Poppins</i>. I know it just had a brilliant 40th anniversary release a couple years ago, but with all the double-dipping on Pan, Dumbo, Pooh, and new platinum releases scheduled for which I <i>have</i> platinum releases on my shelf, I wouldn't think there's a philosophical bar to its consideration (although I guess we'd have to wait till 2010 or so according to the 5-year vault rule). I can't imagine what they could include to justify upgrading my Snow White or Fantasia Anthology (unexpurgated Pastoral exception noted) if I don't already own the player (unless they come <i>way</i> down in price)...but a mega-Poppins might, especially if it has extensive bonus material on the London & NY musical stage productions which I'm unlikely to experience in person.
