Menken talks about the status of the live-action Aladdin movie.
And then there is the live-action “Aladdin” — another Disney musical scored by Menken — which is still in the early stages of preproduction. Not much information is available yet, though Menken says there is still script work going on and a possible director.
“I know there are ongoing talks with Guy Ritchie,” Menken says. “He and I have not met yet.”

Sean Bailey, president of Motion Picture Production at Disney Studios, talks about Guy Richie's approach to the project.
For an example of how the synthesis between filmmaker and story works, Bailey chose Guy Ritchie’s Aladdin, which is about to begin casting. “Guy became interested in doing a Disney movie and we talked a lot about it. When we talked about Aladdin, he said, ‘My stories are really about street hustlers. That’s what I know how to do. And Aladdin is a classic street hustler who makes good.’ Guy’s got his own version of that story in his life. But he wanted to honor and respect the Disney of it all,” Bailey said. “We never want to feel like we have a playbook to these things because we worry it’ll make us creatively complacent. The idea of a highly energized Guy Ritchie Disney musical felt like, Oh, we haven’t done that before.”
But that’s another remake based on a film from the Disney Renaissance, which means there are going to be a lot of opinions. That’s something that Bailey is keenly aware of: “We’ll make sure we still spend a lot of time talking about the contract with the audience is on that particular title. We’re going to have to deliver certain things in Aladdin.”

For some reason, I didn't expect this film to be released before TLM-LA. Especially since it looked like they were going to release the Genies prequel first. If they've changed their minds and are going with this before Genies, then I'm glad.

I think its good if they're looking for unknowns. Fresh faces are always good by me. For the other characters you could get know actors but not for Aladdin & Jasmine. I think Luke Pasqualino would have been too old. Aladdin is supposed to be 18.
I'm glad its a musical. It is what would separate it from a standard action adventure blockbuster.
And I'm just glad my fave Disney film is being brought to life!

But wasn't it technically brought to life, oh, 25 years ago?

No, he means REAL life. You know, with CGI and auto tuning.

Ugh please no. There's a reason all his films in the last few years have flopped. Hard. And I don't think he is remotely funny.

I don’t…really mind it? I mean, I'm just assuming from this casting news that the Genie here is not going to be more serious than in the animated film. Iglehart would be better, but they often want big names for these re-makes. I’ve always thought Will Smith was a decent actor even if he’s a bit insufferable in real life.

JAMES MONROE IGLEHART. That is all. I'm actually shocked Disney isn't pursing him.

What ?!! I need to audition since they're here in the UAE ! (kidding, I can't sing even if my life depended on it lmao)
I'm really glad they are taking the initiative to represent people from different ethnic groups.

He isn't as big a name which is a pity because he's already proven he can bring the Genie to life with his own take that doesn't feel derivative of Robin Williams.

I feel like The Rock would be a better choice, and at this point, a bigger box office draw. Will Smith's popularity is not what it used to be.
But maybe it's too soon after Moana? He's also going to be in the Jungle Cruise movie.

I think The Rock would do a good job, actually. I really enjoy him in most of his comedy films and he's pretty well-liked by nearly everyone these days it seems.

I didn't even think about the Rock, but he would be a great choice. Maybe they feel that he's already played a magical shapeshifter in one film so another one two years later would be too much?

I'd be ok with Dwayne The Rock Johnson as well.

You could check casting websites to see if they at least need extras?!
