Still in theaters, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe has grossed $278 million. The film arrives on DVD April 4 in two versions: a $30 single-disc version and a $40 two-disc set that includes nearly 10 hours of features. Both DVDs have two commentaries from Adamson: one with producer Mark Johnson and production designer Roger Ford and another with the child cast members.

"You get a little bit of their perspective," Adamson says. "It's really fun to see the experience through their eyes." A DVD with an extended version of the film is also in the works, he says.

That's both exciting and frusturating. I love the fact that we're getting one, but I hate the fact that we're getting one long after we've purchased the theatrical version. Now, usually extended cuts improve upon the theatrical cuts in terms of DVD supplements. The problem is that the Collector's Edition of the theatrical cut sounds perfect. There's really not much more they can add for the extended release to warrant a double dip outside of the new cut itself. Because of that, I think Disney should take the same route Fox did with Daredevil: release the theatrical version with lots of excellent supplements the first time around. Then, release the new cut later as a single-disc and essentially barebones release for a very low retail price. That way, the new cut can be an add-on to the edition that most fans have already purchased rather than a replacement. Unfortunately, I doubt Disney will do this. They'll either give us a release exactly like the Collector's Edition only with a new cut (and commentary), or they'll give us a release with new features and hardly anything old ported over so that we'd have to keep both editions if we want all of the supplements. Either way, both options suck, and while I would normally wait for an extended version when it's rumored/announced before the theatrical (like with Fantastic Four and King Kong), I love Narnia too much to wait so long to own it. For all we know, this extended cut may not be released until 2007 to capitalize off of Prince Caspian's theatrical release and therefore be part of a cross promotion.

oh damn it.. I bet we'll be getting the extended cut right before the release of Prince Caspian.... Disney will milk this with all they've got. BLUGH

That would explain why there seems to be no deleted scenes with the upcoming DVD release. But I thought Andrew Adamson said there were hardly any scenes cut from the theatrical version...

That's frustrating. Depending on how impressive the extended release is, I may just rent it whenever it comes out.

Can I ask if Region 1 have English subtitle on bonus? As here Region 2 UK have no English subtitle on the bonus as disappointment as I am deaf myself and miss out all that bonus.

Sorry to say that English subtitles are only on the Feature Film. Them Disney folks have a horrible practice of never putting captions or subtitles on bonus features.

Thanks for that info. It is very sad - compare to new King Kong DVD - they have subtitle on everything - commentary, making of. Excellent why can't Disney do the same? They are big enough.

Do you know anyone I can contact Disney headquarter about bonus English subtitle issue for deaf people?

I just started to dive into the second disc, as I have had the DVD for a while, but haven't had much time to watch a lot of it (I have already watched the 2 commentaries and the blooper real).

All I can say so far is wow. I've only watched 1 and 1/2 features so far, but from what the menus show, I know I'm in for a treat. This DVD will be in my player for a while.

The only films that Disney puts subtitles on their extras are the Pixar films (the Toy Story SEs, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo) and I heard that the commentary for Flightplan has French and Spanish subtitles. I'm not deaf, but it's nice to have subtitles for the extras in case I'm asking "what did he/she say?"

Paramount has been subtitling their video extras ever since they've started producing DVDs, and Universal and Dreamworks got on the subtitling extras bandwagon a few years ago. I hear that Fox has put optional English subtitles for the extras on their upcoming release of The Family Stone... nice to see that they're catering to consumer needs as well.
