This means nothing to me. Haven't you ever seen cartoons which present the Indian girls exactly like the European ones, and it's just the colour that differs? Except for that, if you consider how different Aladdin and Tarzan are from each other (both Glen's heroes), you'll see what I mean. And don't tell me that Aladdin differs because he's Arabian! Only his skin colour is Arabian!

Precisely. If you watch one of the bonus features on the second disc of the Pocahontas 10th AE, you'll see how Glen Keane demonstrated that Ariel and Pocahontas were exact opposites. Since Ariel and Rapunzel are both European, obviously they'll share similar features and since its the same guy, they'll be drawn/CGIed in the same style.

Has anybody heard any recent news about the Rapunzel project? I'm especially interested to know whether it will be animation or cgi and if it'll be more like a spoof or classic fairy tale. I'm definately pulling for animated classic fairy tale.

It's going to be in CGI, with visuals based on the painting by Fragonard called "The Swing". I think it will look lovely.

I can't answer you about the story though...I don't know anything.

Last thing I read was that Lasseter offered Glen Keane the opportunity to do this film traditionally, but he opted for CGI because he felt it was already too far into production.

"The word around the studio is that the First Act of "Rapunzel" found favor at its unspooling up in Emeryville. John Lasseter, I was told, gave plenty of notes to director Glen Keane but overall liked what he saw. John's suggestions were about how to make good things better, rather than eliminating elements that didn't work."



Animated-News.com adds that the film is readying for a June 2009 release date.

hmm..seems interesting. I'm not sure if I like the style of the cgi pics that have been shown. Nice find on the concept art Julian! its gorgeous, but too bad the movie won't really look like that.

I crossing my fingers that they will reconsider her design, I really want Traditional Animation (2-D) to make a come-back.
I'm sick of all this 3-D Computer Animation about Talking Animals escaping from cities to climb hedges to land in madagascar where an Ice Age comes over, and they turn into superheroes so they can throw a little girl back into a door.
Mind you, they are better than Disney Sequels.

It has, but it was in a link in a thread about Rapunzel, Chicken Little, and American Dog. But thanks anyhow for posting it here, where more people will probably see it.

Also, this same art and one of the ones of the tower and the title art is seen at the beginning of the new Magic of Disney Animation Building in Disney MGM Studios. Last time we were there was July 2005, so they had Chicken Little, Rapunzel, and American Dog concept art and a Chicken Little meet and greet. I'm guessing now it is updated with Meet the Robinsons.

I'm kind of in the middle of wanting a traditional, fairy tale musical, and a musical comedy. With Alan Menken, I'm pretty sure it's going to be a musical. After the sort of musical of Home on the Range and with the musical of Enchanted, I'm pretty sure he'd want Rapunzel to be a musical. Anyhow, I'm in the middle between fairy tale and comedy b/c of Kristen Chenoweth (sp?). I remember her from WWoD's Annie and Bewitched, and she seems like she really could pull off a comedic princess. Also, Rapunzel seems like the perfect story for a comedy. She's a princess locked in a tower and the movie would be terribly boring or depressing if we just watch her sulk in her tower, waiting for something to happen. On the other hand, comedy is going to be difficult to work into a classic fairy tale, so a classic fairy tale version already holds promise of a good story. I guess the latter would be playing the safe side.

Also, the Rapunzel CGI work as stills doesn't look too bad. So far, it looks a lot better than Barbie Rapunzel or Barbie Any Fairy Tale movies. I sat through Barbie in Swan Lake b/c it was on Nickelodeon and though the story and characters were enjoyable and likable, it was hard to look past the plastic, cold look of the movie.

Speaking of Disney's CGI (i.e. not Pixar's), I remember reading that Glen Keane was developing a new technology for Rapunzel in which regular 2D animators would draw out a few frames and then use the computer to animate them. Is this wishful thinking or does anyone else remember reading this? If I'm not mistaken, I believe they sort of mentioned this process in the Chicken Little featurette to show how the 2D animators made the transition to 3D

Well, obviously, you forgot about The Frog Princess and Enchanted. Disney is bringing back hand-drawn animation with these two movies due to the whole Lasseter thing, though the animation for Enchanted is being done outside of Disney Feature Animation by James Baxter Animation with a few Disney animators, just like how Richard Williams' studio did the animation of Who Framed Roger Rabbit with a few Disney animators working on the project. Glen Keane was given the option of making Rapunzel in traditional animation, but he declined as a lot of the film's development work had included trying to get a certain look in the CG graphics, and if he had done so, then a lot of the development would have gone to waste.

I don't want to be Mr Negative, but we don't know where the bulk of the animation's being done for Frog Princess. Has any rebuilding of the animation department (specifically staff and equipment) been reported anywhere yet?

Interesting pics. I don't really like the way the title looks for some reason. Maybe it's the fact that unbraided is still in there.

I like the concept art, too! It sort of reminds me of the storybook style early concept art for Sleeping Beauty when she's staring out her window looking bored. Though I like this one better b/c she seems more like she's longing for what's outside. The painting has a lot of emotion in it. Thanks for posting, Enchantress!

Also, I just checked IMDB and the cast list just includes "Rapunzel" and "The Prince." I hope it's just that b/c ppl don't know his name yet. If not, that majorly sucks that the prince character doesn't have a name again!

Wow! I cannot belive how beautiful it looks! It seems as if there is a warm glow all around the movie. REally beautiful. In fact, I think that is the most beautiful CGI I have ever seen.

Rapunzel looks beautiful, sweet and endearing. Her voice is not Kirstin Chenoworth though; perhaps she is just doing the singing voice?
