Yeah same here, and Aladdin merch that has Jasmine front and center and Aladdin is nowhere in sight. Sometimes she's with Iago, Genie or Apu.

uhmm pretty sure those were Aladdin's friends there Jas.

The thing with Jasmine bugs me too and I never got that but as for Merida being a part of the line up, that bugs me less than them including Pocahontas and Mulan, who are not princesses.

Pocahontas is a princess.

Pocahontas is a princess.

How? Just because she's an Indian Chief's daughter. I'm sorry but her inclusion has always bugged me.

Yes. Powhatan was a paramount chief which was the equivalent of king. It was the British invaders who assigned them that name and used it as a substitute for the word "king" to maintain that only the British monarch held that title.

Pocahontas is even referred to as a "princess" in the sequel, long before the creation of the Disney Princess line.

I remember when it first bugged me that they included Rapunzel in the princess line b/c I thought she looked really out of place with all the 2d princesses.

and then I got over it and moved on.

Merida? sure why not. Heck they wanna include Princess Lea?...meh, go ahead.

at the end of the day its just a stupid line to sell merchandise to toddlers & Soccer Moms.

Megara will still always be my favorite gal.

It's funny 'cause Meg in the original stories was the daughter of a King. AKA a princess. Dunno why she got snubbed...

I've heard that Meg was considered to be in the line, but was ultimately scrapped since Hercules just didn't do that well.

And I say that if we include anyone into the line, Princess Calla deserves a shot. :P

In the orignal stories Hercules also ends up killing her. :o

I thought Meg wasn't included because she was teamed with the villain for most of the movie, not because of the movie's gross.

Now, I really enjoyed this article, and I pretty much feel the same as the writer; it isn't the merchandise that should be looked at, look at the characters themselves, and what they stand for. . .

Some precursors to Disney princess merchandise featured Megara and Esmeralda when those were the latest films but then the official Princess line came along to keep the riff raff out. Of course Tinker Bell was included in the original lineup despite having nothing to do with princesses

All the ethnic princesses will stick around to fill racial quotas but never allowed to actually appear on anything. The three princesses from Walt's era should stick around for nostalgia too. Everyone else better watch their back, especially Merida who I expect to be the first to die. What a disgusting troll she turned out to be. Ugh.

Oh whoops ! Sorry ! Apu is the Simpsons guy

About Meg, I heard that it was because parents might think that she's a bad role model for young girls. Guessing because of how heavily sexualized she is, works for the villian, and is super duper thin.

Though she's a zillion times better than Ms I would rather die than be you Mum, while destroying something precious to her

Well, she is an attractive white/blonde girl. I'm sure that was hard for them to resist. I bet Tinker Bell never got the "bad role model" script for that reason; unlike Merida or Megara, who unfortunately weren't blonde enough, she tried to kill a little girl within the first half hour of the movie.

Although Pocahontas was not a princess in the context of Powhatan culture, the Virginia Company nevertheless presented her as a princess to the English public.
She is a princess for the good of the English understanding as her father was ruler, but she herself would not have succeeded him.

For Disney matters - yes she's a princess. Disney were hardly accurate with the film so why not make her a princess?

I do remember early merchandise with Meg and Esmeralda included as my sister was quite young as got the Disney Princess Magazine. Sometimes even Alice popped up as a 'princess' which annoyed me even as an 8/9 year old.

Poor Eilonwy, I say! She 's a pretty white blonde girl and totally ignored. Where's the justice?

I never read the book, what is she even the princess of? The kitchen? Prydain? The elves?

The horned King was ruling over Prydan, so was she the daughter of the previous ruler? She always seems a bit random.

Merida needs to get kicked out and Eilonwy should rightfully take her place. :D
