It's not a stupid question at all. The Dormouse has always been a male, but for this version, they made her a female. They did this so (spoiler) there could be a slight love triangle between her, the Mad Hatter, and Alice. She's basically what Tinker Bell is to Peter and Wendy: the highly jealous and possessive sidekick whom the hero barely acknowledges. Of course, this is only going by the first draft of the script. Things might have changed since then, though so far most of what I've seen matches with that draft.

Oh, Okay...

And I guess that plot point kind of makes sense... It seems a little odd to me, but OK.... The Tink and Pan analogy works pretty well for me... It just seems a little bizarre for some reason... I do wonder how it will play out, and if that's been changed.

The March Hare kind of looks like a beat-up plush toy. But I like him that way!

I was at the mall last monday with my nephew when we decided to go to Hot Topic. Imagine my surprise when I enter the store and saw TONS of Alice in Wonderland merchandise...MONTHS before release!

OK, OK, not really surprising since many movies get merchandise before its release. But what struck me is that we just got the second trailer and information on the film is still limited and we already have Hot Topic featuring very elaborate t-shirts, journals, books, decals, hoodies etc.

Guess this is a great way to generate hype for the movie.

Where are the Mad Hatter's and Alice's feet? It's kinda ironic the only character's 'feet' you can see if the White queen's, whose character doesnt walk ^^

I'm willing to bet that this banner still isn't finished, so they may be working on the feet still.

Actually, you can just barely make out their legs and feet from behind the table legs:

It's more obvious when you zoom in, especially with Alice's legs. Her feet are totally obscured by the base of the table leg, and the Hatter's feet seem to be pointing directly at us.

You're right, Disneykid! I see them so clearly, now!

On the comparative between Syfy and Burton's Alice's...

Both are a mixture of remake and sequel. The latest trailer hints Burton's movie is a sequel because everyone is going nuts Alice is back. Where as in the SyFy version, Hatter, Ratty, and Charlie talk about "the Alice of legend" who "brought the whole house of cards down" 150 years ago.

I think this was a total coincidence though. Burton has kept tight lip about his Alice, especially during the time SyFy's Alice was likely being written and filmed.

Character wise...Burton went for a more traditional Alice. SyFy's Alice is a blackbelt. Burton's Hatter is quite mad and kinda creepy. Syfy's Alice is more sex appeal. Though I do think Andrew Lee Pott's performance reminds me a bit of Depp's performance as Jack Sparrow, in mannerisms and some facial expressions. The eyeliner didn't hurt either.

And Burton is going for a more true to the book version while Burton-izing it.
Where as SyFy made it more modern. The Suits, Hatter and other characters use modern guns for instance. And they fly on motorized flamingos.

In the end, comparing the films to each other isn't exactly fair to both of them, since both films took different paths in their adaptations. But a comparison is still understandable and warranted.

Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland

I will wait to see if it will add something good or not, but I don't see the Doormouse liking the Hatter as very necessary or fitting at all.

And the Doormouse still could have stayed a boy and liked the Hatter romantically...in fact, I bet no one could even tell if it was a boy or a girl, so parents wouldn't even notice.

Did you know that Walt Disney was going to try to put some "sentiment" into his Alice in Wonderland by hooking Alice up with The White Night? That would have given her more "heart" like thought she didn't have.

And now Tim Burton is adding more emotion (I guess) by hooking Alice up with the Mad Hatter!

That's a really good point, Disney Duster! The poor Reluctant Dragon is lonely being the only "known" gay Disney character (unless you count the stereotyped Cupid character from "Who Killed Cock Robin?") and even he's only "supposed" from an assumption made considering an episode of "House of Mouse." Come on, Dormy, join the party! Well.... I guess not if she's going to be a girl, because then it defeats the purpose... :P

What about Radcliffe's assistant, Wiggins, from Pocahontas? The way he was written and how David Ogden Stiers portrayed, he did seem to be a bit attracted with Radcliffe.

Yeah, I was just thinking about that.... But that's really an even vaguer assumptions. But sure, we can add him to the party, too! :P

Disney Channel's Movie Surfers aired a tantalizingly brief interview with Johnny Depp that features a few new shots and lines from the film:

I hope someone posts a better quality version of it soon. The shot with Alice putting the Hatter's hat on his head is interesting to me because while they're both in the royal fitting room ala the second trailer, the lighting is completely different. The trailer had daytime lighting; this looks like night. Are the backgrounds still being tweaked, or does Alice spend way more time at the Red Queen's castle than she does in the script? Hmm...

And a few more Alice collectibles are cropping up:

Does anyone else find it a bit odd that Depp described the relationship between Alice and the Hatter as "almost like a brother and sister?" That doesn't sound conducive to romance, somehow. :P

Are they meant to have a romance?

That's what I'd heard. Of course, for all we know, that may have changed. I think that that was according to the original script.

Just something quick that I never posted. On Christmas Day I went with my family to see Sherlock Holmes. To my pleseant surprise they played the UK trailer with Alice being proposed to at the beginning. Just thought it was interesting that the UK trailer is what has been sent to the theaters.
