Filmmaking Process - Moana 2:

I saw it today and, while it doesn't hold a candle to the original (I actually forgot how GOOD it is, saw it yesterday and I cried so much ) it is actually completely competent and at least doesn't cause any harm. It feels like a good time, unlike, say, Frozen 2 where I felt completely dumbfounded leaving the theatre.

There are the obvious cute-made-for-merch characters (I wonder if the filmmakers at WDAS already feel like they have to include one or if the executives come at every movie and give them this note), repeated jokes from the original, the team feels a little bit pointless (except the kakamora - would have loved if Moana had a crush on the guy, though).


At some points you notice exactly how an episode would end and leave you hanging, and I'll always wonder how would that work.


I expected absolutely nothing from the songs, but I really like We're Back and Beyond. At least there is no Shiny.

The mid-credits felt a bit avenger-y to me but I'm interested to see where it leads.

If you liked the original film, you'll probably find something to like here, but it won't convert anyone.

I am pleased that the top two movies at the box office this week are going to be musicals.

I think I will wait until Tuesday where my family gets tickets for just 2 euros

Doesn't seem like the type of movie that I have to run and see (I've seen Wicked two times already, at least two more times in the next weeks)

All I've seen in social media about Moana 2 is another Wish, a movie that is not bad itself but not being bad makes it EVEN WORSE (because it doesn't offer any type of anything new) and that they want you to remember the first movie all the time instead of making you enjoy the movie you're currently seeing

Anyways it will likely make 1.6b at the box office and Disney will learn the wrong lessons, like with The Lion King (2019)

Not if we make sure to get a head start and ensure they don’t learn the wrong lessons.

Plus, in terms of The Lion King (2019), it seemed Disney learned THE RIGHT lessons from that movie with Mufasa at least, hence why Mufasa: The Lion King is a prequel/sequel that is a new story rather than a remake of Simba’s Pride, along with having animals showing emotions and expressions this time to acknowledge that complaint from the 2019 remake and having all-new original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda for us.

So… your complaint and fear-mongering is subjective and warranted.

Anyways just saw Moana 2 (literally 2 minutes ago)

The movie was EXTREMLY mediocre, yes it's enjoyable (I've seen worse movies) it's like Wish BUT at least we like Moana as a character so thats the positive point.

You can tell it was transformed into a movie just 10 months ago (maybe even less) and the animation is not THAT GOOD as I saw in social media reviews (it was fine but nothing special)

The songs are all mediocre except Beyond (and that song is just okay) the Polynesian (Tokelauan) songs are good but I wouldn't count them as part of the "real soundtrack" since the characters don't sing them.

Another thing I liked is that we see dark-skinned melanesians and aboriginal characters, they're from the region and it's good to show they exist.

The villain isn't even a villain? Her song is "fine".

Pua doesn't serve any purpose, I though they would make him do something like Hei Hei in the first movie that was useful.

Anyways the movie is a 4/10

But with Moana nostalgia is a 5/10

Oh I forgot, I love Rachel House grandma character, she's exactly like Carmen Gahona, a famous woman from spain TV reality shows

Do you guys think Disney's sequels do and will do big numbers because of brand recognition alone?

I saw the movie yesterday and it's really bad. Some parts are not well developed and the story is not well told. You can feel that they removed parts from the plot to transforme the series into a Movie.
The songs are the worst thing from the movie. “We're back” is the only one that could be remembered but the rest are alfil. They gave me the feeling of beeing listening one bad soundtrack from a Land before time's sequel.
The characters don’t contribute at all. Only Simea is cute. The rest of all are really forgettable.They are really well animated of course.
Matangi's movement is really great but her story is not well told at all and her song is the worst one.
It's a pitty. Disney's going to earn tina of money with this and they are not going to learn any good lesson at all.

While I enjoyed the movie and had a fun time, I had never had such low expectations for a WDFA film in my whole life, due to being nervous as to how choppy or episodic, etc, it would be. I was happy with the end results. But, obviously the film is doing amazing at the box office. Besides Disney getting the idea that they will continue with making sequels, because they make so much money, what other lessens will they learn from this? How much different, in the end, was the production on this film than the others, and how might their future film production change due to Moana 2's success?

Amy, I have also been wondering, would this movie have even existed without viewership data collected from Disney+? Like putting aside the exact circumstances of its production, it seems like the fanbase who is supporting Moana 2 was largely built on the streaming platform. That must have played a factor in Disney identifying the IP as a candidate for another theatrical release. I think Disney+ has been a mixed bag for the company, but that data must be invaluable for understanding what audiences are watching and rewatching.

Encanto 2 has to be next, right?

I think exactly the same, Simea is the only thing that can be considered good from this movie, the rest is pointless, even the ending of Moana as a character is pointless, she already got "that" in the first movie

Btw since your spaniard like me, do you think they changed Simea to Simia in pronunciation so it doesn't sound like "Si mea"? Her name in spanish sounds very bad joke parody name

I never said Mufasa looked good, and if by elsewhere you mean reddit I say the exact same things there

I kinda hope The Princess and the Frog 2 is next if they turn Tiana’s Disney+ series into that movie and they push it back to Thanksgiving 2029.

Good point. There's nothing bad that's being caused by this film's success since Disney have been on the sequel train for years. That's partly why they pushed WDAS into 3D because they recognized there was more franchise potential with 3D films from watching PIXAR and Dreamworks. Frozen 2-4, Zootopia 2-3, Moana 2-3, Encanto 2-3, etc. is just the realization of their planning, so... Maybe in-between the sequel successes, an original property might take off occasionally. They were in a dark area around the pandemic, but even some of their older films like BH6 and WIR weren't strong enough to push sequels from, too (although they still tried with WIR).
