unprincess wrote:how would some of you have felt about Merida if she were not presented in the film as a princess but just a regular girl (maybe a peasant girl or just an average village girl) who just wants to stay single instead of marry a village boy at her mothers request. And then b/c of that Disney would not have included her in the Princess line. She'd just have her own line, or be part of a separate line with non-Princess Disney female characters?

I would have liked that. Rather, axe the whole forced marriage subplot and the princess/royalty drama, and have the film be about a girl in a conflict with her family/mother. You can still keep the bear elements of the story, and I think it would've worked better as a film.

Merida needs to be kept in the Princess line now, however, to shut up the Tumblr/ Disney feminists, so I disagree that they should kick her out of the official Princess line.

Please keep her in the official Disney Princess line, because another ' FRZEN IS RACSIT !!! BoYCOTT THIS SATantiC MOOVIE !!! '

''Here is my lame ass Microsoft paint "essay '' on why this movie is raacst and made from the deevll that the eval WHITE MAN CREATED *HISSS * KILL ALL WHITE MEN " !!!

Thing again from the Disney feminists/ Tumblr Justice Bloggers because they " kicked out the only Princess that didn't want to marry a man even though Jasmine, Pocahontas and Aurora exist " Would be awful.

I think....... I would rather shoot myself, then go through what happened between September- December again.

Huh, she's a mix of all previous princesses thrown together: she has Mulan's action, Jasmine's "I DON'T WANNA BE A PRINCESS!!" attitude, Pocahontas's forced marriage subplot, and Ariel's conflict with her father. And like Ariel, she's a fiery redhead.

She will be kept in, I don't think she would ever be 'dumped' so to speak by the line. But most likely 'fazed out' by being shoved to the back and not used as often in merchandise etc.

To be honest, Disneyland Resort Paris hasn't made any sort of effort to connect her with the public. She has her dress available in shops and she had a window on Main Street in the summer, but she wasn't anywhere to be seen in any of the parades or the Princess Pavilion, which is really really odd.

On one hand you can say she isn't a great character in the first place hence why the ramshackle investment of her in parks etc, but then on the other hand you can argue she hasn't been given enough of a shane to connect and be a real part of the Disney clan.

That's a sad excuse for the creation of a character.
She was made to be that Princess that didn't end up with a man, but now that we have Elsa.... ?

Agree so much

I love love love love Elsa, but I just can't see her fitting in within the Princess line.

I know she has a pre-made sparkly dress, but she seems almost above being in the Princess line, if you see what I mean ?

Considering the fact that Merida's been compared to the other girls and every other princess has been criticized for her to look good ("ooh She's better than Mulan because she doesn't dress like a man to proove her power" "ooh she's better than Ariel cause she doesn't end up with a guy"...etc etc). Constantly bashing the others to make herself look good, and she's not that good a character to begin with in comparison to the other girls.

And the redesign! There was a petition for Merida to return back to her "normal" looks but nobody cared about how the other girls looked.

i do remember people not liking the recent princess makeovers with the modern style hairdos. I didnt care much for it either. I also hated the all gold dresses & that time their gowns were all encrusted with BLING! yuck!

I just think she should be kicked out of the franchise. Disney Princess doesn't mean just princess by title but by nature too. Model behavior, giving something for the girls (and some boys) to look up to. That's not to say Merida isn't a strong heroine, she is, but she isn't a Disney princess, she's Pixar, end-of. She was created in Pixar so she should stay in Pixar. Otherwise we may as well get crossovers in Marvel and Star Wars as well. Sorry if it sounds strict, but its just how I feel. Get her out. Keep her in her Pixar family.

I feel like who a Disney princess is is going down the drain. And this is baaad. Get rid of Merida and it'll be restored to its former glory.

Do they have a public beheading at Disney World when a princess is removed from the line up? I would LOVE to attend that.

Yeah

Plus if it includes Merida, why not include Star Wars royalty as well ??

They'll never kick her out. They just won't put her on the merchandise.

Her inclusion always bothered me because she's Pixar. She should have stayed there. She sticks out like a sore thumb.

Can anyone who has a talent for art make this happen?

I don't even mind Merida that much. I don't hate her at least but I need to see a Princess dethroning. She is the least worthy.

They won't get rid of her, she just won't be used very much. She just doesn't seem very popular at the moment, with anyone. Maybe that might change in time? Who knows.

Since the days of their five picture deal, the Disney company has always owned the rights to the Pixar characters. They've been under the Disney umbrella since the beginning. I mean, I can understand where you're coming from, but it is what it is. That said, I'd consider them to be closer to being authentic "Disney" characters than those from Marvel or Star Wars. Their whole foundation and history with the company is much different.

And I feel like the only "glory" the Disney Princess line has ever had was making billions of dollars a year in merchandising. Because, it sure doesn't honor or respect the characters or the legacy of the films from which they come from. Aside from the awful, sparkly redesigns that make them look like Barbie (and in all honesty, I think Cindrella received a much worse redesign than Merida), their personalities are altered and degraded to fit their line. I remember seeing a book or something where there was a blurb about Tiana, and it said something along the lines of, "Tiana always dreamed of being a princess, and now she is!" Lol. How much further from her character could you get? And I can't be the only one who is annoyed that every Disney film with one of the princesses from this line are now called "Princess movies" as if it is some sort of genre.

I only get annoyed that Aladdin's considered a "princess film". Yeah, because Jasmine was the protagonist, right.
