I know you said that you haven't seen the film for a while but do you remember that Frollo is so disgusted by the baby that he is about to drop it down a well before he is stopped by the archdeacon? I see what your saying but I think the reason Frollo is such a convincing and effective villain is that he is completely, entirely, unapologetically evil. He does say during the beginning that perhaps one day Quasimodo will prove useful and he does, leading Frollo to the gypsies. I think Quasimodo views Frollo as a guardian as he has always been told a lie that Frollo saved his life but I don't think Frollo is capable of having any kind of paternal feeling toward anyone, not just Quasimodo.
Not to take away from DDuster's opinion, but I personally would never say that Frollo has paternal feeling for Quasi so much as Quasi has feelings for Frollo, who's been his only human contact beyond the people in the cathedral. And I think the same of Gothel, who shows no real attachment to Rapunzel throughout the movie. It's something that both Quasi and Rapunzel are supposed to feel--a feeling that's been fostered by Gothel/Frollo, and a natural desire for relationships in Rapunzel/Quasi--but neither Frollo or Gothel ever return that affection.

I disagree about Gothel. She may not have had a very affectionate personality, but why would she have gone 3 days away for paint for Rapunzel. Why would she make Rapunzel's favourite hazelnut soup for her birthday? I think she was a little attached to Rapunzel.

She did all of that because she didn`t want Rapunzel to rebel against her, and leave the tower. She needed to make sure that Rapunzel thought she cared about her.

I don't know. A 3 day trip is a long way to trick someone into thinking you care about them. I don't think Gothel
loved Rapunzel or anything. I just think she got used to her company and liked her a little when she was in a good mood.

She was never nuice to Rapunzel until that time.

Well he has expressed he sees composing just as a job, one which he doesn't necessarily enjoy

Maybe he just doesn’t like composing to meet other people’s needs. Hasn’t it been said that the producers of Tangled had him change a lot to fit what they were going for? Who knows, possibly the songs would’ve been stronger if he had been left alone. But what if's are aggravating.
But I think that happens with any job. People always say, "Get a job in something you enjoy." Which usually just makes you end up hating what you once enjoyed.

I'm sure it's incredibly frustrating work. You can drive yourself to exhaustion writing what you think is excellent material only to have whoever's calling the shots reject it in favor of something you think is less suited. I imagine it's the difference between, say, his experience writing "Little Shop of Horrors" and something for a major studio like Disney. With LSOH it was essentially him and Howard working through it themselves and calling the shots, and with a major studio you risk getting "Part of Your World" cut because some kid can't hold onto a box of popcorn.

And even when they adapted Little Shop of Horrors, a couple of songs were cut even after they were filmed, like when "The Meek Shall Inherent" was dramatically shortened or the infamous re-shot ending that took out "Don't Feed the Plants" and had Audrey II die at the end.

I agree, I hate what ifs...
But think how things might have been different if Alan Menken had more creative control! Like how Howard Ashman was Executive Producer (?) and worked on the story for Little Mermaid and Aladdin, and of course those turned out great.

LOL! I've already ordered the regular Blu-ray/combo pack, just gotta wait for the release date so it can ship.
