Back to the topic at hand... Has anyone picked up and read the novelization yet? I'm quite curious about the story.

Does anyone know when the soundtrack will be released? I wonder if it will have two releases, like the other live action features? 1-disc regular and 2-disc deluxe edition, with digipack.

December 7th is the official release of the soundtrack though a deluxe edition is yet to be announced. Speaking of the music, Disney has officially released The Place Where Lost Things Go and Trip a Little Light Fantastic and honestly these two songs sound so wonderful! Can't wait to hear the rest of them.

How exciting!

“The Place Where Lost Things Go” seems to be this movie’s “Feed the Bird,” the emotional center piece of the movie. It’s a lovely little song, and it wouldn’t be out of place in any modern Broadway show. It moves the plot forward in a way that “Feed the Birds” doesn’t. “Feed the Birds” is entirely allegorical and Poppins delivers her message to the children in prose, “Sometimes people we love, through no fault of their own, can’t see past the end of their nose.” Whereas in the new film, Mary delivers her message in her song: “your mother is watching over you.” It’s really more indicative of the changes in modern Disney musicals than anything— Howard Ashman was really the first person at Disney to stress that each song be integral to the plot and move it forward, and Shaiman and Wittman are continuing in that tradition.

“Trip a Little Light Fantastic,” this film’s Chim Chim Cher-ee/Step in Time?, perhaps, was a lot of fun and I look forward to seeing that on film. I enjoyed Mary speaking “leery,” which seems representative of Cockney rhyming slang in the same way that the original film used the Cockney pearlies during “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.“ Emily Blunt’s drole delivery during this song reminded me of Michelle Dockery on Downton Abbey, too, which may be indicative of a very different take on Mary than Julie— she’s generally very stern and no-nonsense but let’s her hair down during the musical numbers (sometimes, not all the time as she doesn’t in “I Love to Laugh”). I’ll have to see the whole performance to judge, of course.

Something new, a little different, but respectful of the original, very fun, and quite good in its own right, too. I probably need to check out at this point, however, to save some surprises for the movie theatre.

I didn't like "Trip a Little Light Fantastic" at all. It's annoying and overlong and tried too hard to be a Sherman-type song but lacking the wit and melody to pull it off. I did enjoy "The Place Where Lost Things Go" though. It's a pleasant albeit unremarkable ballad. If one of the songs has to be nominated for an Oscar, I hope it's the latter.

It almost seems the songs are from another time. So beautiful! 'The Place Where Lost Things Go' is so bittersweet. I'm sure it will be even more affecting in context.

IKR?? I love the both of them and repeat listens of these songs are getting better and better. Plus i'm very happy that the song "A Conversation" is for Ben Whishaw.

So there won't be a deluxe edition of the soundtrack? That's disappointing. I was hoping we'd get some deleted songs or demos.

That would've been pretty great, to know which songs were deleted or changed into the versions we know them. Plus it's interesting to note that the "Overture" is right after Lin's song "Underneath the Lovely London Sky". Interesting choice from the first movie which begins with the "Overture" and then the songs, but maybe it all makes sense in context.

They aren't as memorable as the songs from the original, but both are better than I expected from the snippets. My favorite of the two is "The Place Where Lost Things Go". It seems to be a combination of "Feed the Birds" and "Stay Awake", in terms of the place it occupies in the movie, though it has of course a different message. I can see both songs nominated to the Oscars, but I don't think they will beat "Shallow" from A Star Is Born.

Ah! The overture playing after the first musical number seems to mimic The Sound of Music where Maria/Julie Andrews sang the opening number and then the overture/main titles began. The beginning of the overture sampled in the b-roll footage even sounds like the overture to The Sound of Music. Cool!

Looking at the track list, interesting that Colin Firth doesn't have a villain number in the movie (assuming he is indeed playing a villain).

Okay now the music choice is making sense, The Sound of Music had a magnificent opening that still holds up perfectly after 50+ years. I'll bet that the opening violin chords we keep hearing in the trailers will be the first notes of the movie, showing London and introducing Jack and his song which leads to the "Overture".

I've been revisiting the original's score & songs in anticipation for the sequel ( probably not the wisest choice, I can see that ! ) And I absolutely cannot see how 'Chim Chim Cher-ee' won the Oscar for Best Song out of the ENTIRE songbook of the film. Does anyone know if people were shocked at the time ? Maybe not shocked, that isn't the right word, but certainly isn't the most memorable or most quotable at all. My money would have been on 'A Spoonful of Sugar' or 'Lets Go Fly A Kite' ? Julie Andrews barely sings in 'Chim Chim Cher-ee' as well, which is ironic it was the song that won.

I may be of the minority, but just wanted to share my two cents.

I agree. I had the same thought last night. Of all the songs it’s neither the most flashy nor the most haunting. It’s just sort of . . . there.

Agreed, "A Spoonful of Sugar", "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and especially "Feed the Birds" deserved that Oscar and not the one that won. Heck even "Trip a Little Light Fantastic" is better than "Chim Chim Cher-ee".
