Oh c'mon a more fantasy mermaid red would still look great. Not too red but a little redder than she has it now because honestly that is auburn, not red.

It worked for her... it's a fantasy film... I say, stick to the original color as much as possible. We don't need to tone this down for live action!

Different tastes, I guess. I thought Amber Heard looked awful in Aquaman, especially on dry land. What works in animation can become an eyesore in live action. You must adapt.

Agreed. An unnatural shade of red is perfect for a mythical creature like mermaids. It should stand out from the shade redheads of the land have. It also needs to be vibrant enough to look good underwater where colors will be muted and washed out.

Tell that to Sierra Boggess.
Yes, I
would prefer the character
look like the animated film. But if they’re going to abandon that altogether, hopefully they’ll at least pick someone who can act and sing well because Zendaya ain’t it.

And yet
Aquaman was a hit. Besides, if the other live-action remakes are to go by, everyone here will be ripping apart the costumes and designs regardless. Might as well look like the original film they're re-making.

Aquaman’s box office is hardly attributable to Amber Heard’s shade of hair.
I don’t want slavish devotion to the 1989 film. I think Ariel’s shade of hair is perfect for animation, but would be distracting in a live action movie. I hope they go with a more subdued shade, ala Zendaya who looks very beautiful with that hair.

I didn't say it was. My point was that hair that color is hardly odd for a live-action film or a hit film.

I don't think wanting the main character's iconic look to be the same can be labeled "slavish devotion." I guess if I was going to worry about high taste in regards to the re-makes, that would disqualify Zendaya's tacky Disney Channel acting abilities, much less a fake, red wig.

This is a disagreement about aesthetics and what works or doesn’t work in different film mediums. We have different expectations for this remake and it’s impossible to prove the other’s opinion incorrect no matter how much we might disagree. It simply comes down to this: we have different tastes and mine is better.

This is a disagreement about whether Ariel's red hair was iconic or not, not different film mediums. Aquaman is a live-action film just like this is and the world kept turning just fine, whatever way you feel about it. I don't want the remake to be exactly like the original film--I haven't expected that of any of them--but, yes, I darn well want Ariel to have red hair because that's what the character is known for.

I know we couldn’t have had a disagreement about whether or not Ariel’s hair is iconic because I would never say otherwise. Of course I would agree with you on that premise, as would anybody here. We just have different feelings about how that iconic red hair should be translated to the live action medium, and on that subject I’ve said my piece and I don’t have anything else to add. It’s just my opinion, and I don’t mean to make it out as anything more than that.

I'd prefer the bright red hair color for Ariel because it's her defining physical trait and anything else would look washed out, especially under the sea. It's an interesting concept though if her hair would change colors while she's on land. There's a 1976 film adaptation of TLM from Russia where the mermaid character's natural hair color is seafoam, but upon becoming human, her hair turns blonde. However, I think it's important for Ariel to be distinguished from the other land characters to show how unique she is and why Eric falls in love with her, so I think her hair to be the same shade of red even then.

In that 1976 film, remember her hair only became blonde because the witch took her seafoam hair as payment for the transformation!

You're right, I forgot that besides the mermaid's voice, the witch asked for her seafoam hair as well.

Lea Michele Spills on Her Dream Disney Princess Role
https://www.purewow.com/news/lea-michel ... ncess-role
“I’ve always loved Ariel, but I also love Belle from Beauty and the Beast,” she says. “That said, I didn’t know how much I loved The Little Mermaid until I did the show. Of all the Disney princesses, Ariel has the most iconic song. Belle has iconic songs, too, but ‘Part of Your World’ gave me chills.”
After having played Ariel at the Hollywood Bowl Concert, Lea Michele seems interested in reprising the role. I wonder if Disney has ever considered her for the part.

I loved Glee, but I do not want Lea Michele in this role.

I'd definitely prefer an unknown with red hair, but I'd be grateful if Lea Michele got this now and would take her any day of the week what with there being much worse options on the table. At least she would be fine even if she isn’t quite my picture for the role. I wouldn’t mind Darren Criss as Eric either.

I would like Lea, but I wish for someone younger and unknown. I wish for someone who really looks like a rebellious teen.
