But inside the box are diamonds, rubies and pearls. :) Perhaps.
Oh, well, then in that case, I insist upon America getting this box. Frankly, this whole ordeal smacks of racism. It's like "The Princess and the Frog" never even happened!

I jumped on board with DVD in 2002, right about the time I started actually caring about movies.

And I'm sorry, but I still think animation looks terrible in HD. I saw the new Simpsons opening a few days ago and nearly cried. All the character the show had has been traded for overly bright colors and lines that look to clean to be real art.

Sleeping Beauty didn't really do much for me in HD either. Yeah you can see more detail, but everything looked wrong for some reason. I just didn't like it.

3D animation looks great in HD, 2D doesn't IMO.

This is one animation fan who'll be sticking to DVD, until he is forced to change.

I just came from Jim Hill Media and read that Disney will no longer be releasing 2-disc DVDs!!! Did you guys hear about this?

Jim Hill is

a) a liar (My sources tell me John Lasseter is Satan!)
b) a shill (Did you hear about so and so's new book? Or my sponsor, Universal Studios, new rides?)
c) full of $#!+ (All of Pixar's films are box office disappointment and failures! They are, I tell you! Did I mention John Lasseter is Satan?)
d) all of the above

Correct answer: D

Well, there's not been that many 2 disc DVDs recently has there? While Wall-E got one, Cars didn't. Just the Platinums, Bruckheimer, Walden and [most] Pixars.

So I can't say its a surprise or a change. It doesn't seem like a huge change of policy to me. Somehow, I doubt the Platinums will be cut down, or for example films like Bruckheimer's upcoming Prince of Persia.

Bolt's 2 disc set is interesting, because from the BBFC runtimes, it almost certainly could all be included on the single disc.

Oh a Lasseter isn't Satan. He iss the diet coke of Satan though. :)

That might just have confirmed that there will be no more Disney Treasures!

Depends on what titles you're buying.

Forgive my double-posting, but I know a site who's predictions are almost never wrong. Tvpredictions.com, and they say that Downloads will not be the norm until there is a standard for services, and they also saw blu winning the format war. They also say that the Delay bill for the digital conversion is poorly thought out and will leave 7 million tv-less.

They said yesterday HDTV may not reach the majority of US households

"But with the deepening global recession, it's possible that HDTV will not reach a majority of U.S. households in the next 5-10 years, or maybe ever."

So it seems to me like nos. 2, 3, and 5 are the biggest problems. I never said HD was going to come quickly, but blu is still selling more than DVD was in it's third year. Consumer education is exceptionally poor.

Pinocchio: Platinum Edititon

I posted this in the Beauty and the Beast Original Colors thread, but I wanted to say it here over an arguably more important matter of a film being changed after it's original creators have died:
2009net, and nomad2010, you can change the restored screencaps to make them look a good amount like the old ones, but you do still see they are not the same? Like, usually, things that are bright will be brighter and things that are dark will be darker in the old ones, like more contrast actually, than the altered restored clips you change, which become more middle ground. But even if you don't think that, they are still not the same, and the point is, we want the original way they looked. Obviously we can change the restored versions to imitate the originals a lot, but we want, and I think we deserve, the original, and Walt and all his artists would want us to see the originals.

And c'mon that scene had all the light sucked out it's supposed to be lit by the candle it's cold blue wtf.

You're still comparing an old restoration with what will undoubtedly be a newer and much more noteworthy one. I seriously doubt that while colors may be brightened in some films, Disney would ever make Pinocchio look like that again.

The flame's inability to give light in that screencap makes it look like a shaped piece of Play-doh on the wick instead of fire.

As was the PS3 compared to the PS2's sales in the beginning. We see how that's going.

Yeah because the PS3 is the only Blu Ray player out there

I'll agree with all of those points in the What's Wrong With HDTV? article. I could add a few more as well from what I've gathered talking to people. The one problem I have with Blu-ray right now is the players. There are several good stand alone players out now, but it still seems to be "safe" the PS3 is the best bet. In its 3rd year a format shouldn't have to worry about players not working with certain discs, and waiting for firmware to be released to fix it in my opinion. When DVD was released you didn't have to worry if discs would not play, and players bought in the late 90s can still play new DVDs. Blu-ray needs to focus on better stand alone players. I don't know how they can do it, but they need to get rid of mandatory firmware updates as well. This will help them become a "mass market" item like DVD in the long run.

Anyway Walmart will have a Plush toy included with the Pinocchio DVD.

Website has it listed for $19.96 right now.

DarthPrime wrote:When DVD was released you didn't have to worry if discs would not play, and players bought in the late 90s can still play new DVDs.
That's inaccurate: compatibility issues and firmware upgrades have definitely been a part of DVD's history. (I've personally owned 2 players bought in the past 6 years which have had playback issues with certain titles: one was sold in a yard sale, the issues with the second were resolved after a firmware upgrade.)

DarthPrime wrote: The one problem I have with Blu-ray right now is the players. There are several good stand alone players out now, but it still seems to be "safe" the PS3 is the best bet.
The PS3 is really only the best bet if you're interested in any of the rest of its non-Blu-ray functions. There are less expensive, reliable, and fully-capable players available from a variety of name manufacturers.
DarthPrime wrote: I don't know how they can do it, but they need to get rid of mandatory firmware updates as well.
Firmware upgrades aren't going anywhere anytime soon, for better or worse. It's early days exploring the format's capabilities beyond simple video playback. Caveat emptor, as they say: the well-researched consumer is a smart consumer. My advice, were it sought, would be to invest in a BD-Live player for the great ease in firmware discomfort the internet connection provides, and to avoid the tempting $150-and-under "white box" players arriving this year in favor of a name manufacturer providing timely technical support.

That was me. Don't expect me to care what you think of me, or to lose any sleep over it. But one thing I wanted to ask: where did you see me saying anything about watching VHS?

Much more insightful thought from me on BluRay can be found in the thread 'Is Disney done with DVD?'. You're welcome. :)

I also suggest that people who want to continue the DVD/BluRay discussion take to THAT thread.

Er... That's the biggest nonsense I've ever heard. In fact, if anything, I think Europeans have more disposable incomes, because of higher wages and more social benefits.
