I finally managed to see the film on a recent flight to America and I thought it was brilliant. I loved the characters, particularly Merida, and thought all of the voice work was brilliant. The mother-daughter relationship was really well done I thought and the story as a whole was terrific. It doesn't quite reach the pinnacle of Pixar's brilliance for me (Toy Story, The Incredibles, Up) but it was a film I had high hopes for and in many respects it more than matched my expectations. A solid 8/10 for me.

Leaving behind the whole "Is Merida a Disney Princess" debacle for a bit, recently I saw a review online that kept mentioning that Brave was copying Brother Bear.

Well, I am going to say this... Anyone that says that Brave rips off Brother Bear has not seen Brother Bear in a while. Why? Because the ONLY element the two stories share is that one character gets turned into a bear. But the reasons why are wildly different.

In Brother Bear, the main reason he gets turned into a bear is because the spirits (and his deceased brother) descended upon him to teach him a lesson about the power of love and compassion. In turn, he becomes the older brother of a bear cub, and it is through that relationship that Kenai becomes a better person and makes the sacrifice of staying a bear forever.

In Brave, the main reason the Queen Elinor gets turned into a bear is because Merida was so frustrated by her that she recklessly went to a witch and asked for a spell that backfired on her greatly. This leads to a whole other story about how a Prince with the same ambitions as Merida tried to become stronger but became an evil bear in the process. The lesson the two share is that they had to re-establish the bond between mother and daughter in order to save themselves and their kingdom.

The circumstances for each transformation is very different, so why people bring out Brother Bear as a flaw against Brave I don't know. I mean... The Plague Dogs has talking dogs, and yet I don't anyone say that it ripped off Lady and the Tramp. The Great Mouse Detective is out and I don't hear anyone say "But it is too much like Secret of NIMH and An American Tail!". These stories may have similar elements, concepts and archetypes, but the stories and the consequences the characters face are different from each other.

Brave does deal with bears and transformations. That's where the similarities with Brother Bear end, in my opinion.

If a mod could shorten the link, that would be cool.

The Legend of Mor'du short to be on the Brave Blu Ray/DVD release! It may be 2D??

http://family-room.ew.com/2012/11/02/br ... ort-mordu/

For The Legend of Mor’du, Larsen wanted the look of concept drawings that are created for an animated film, but rarely resemble the finished product. Such illustrations are typically very expressive, a little impressionistic, and a lot abstract. But instead of just using them as a way to convey a vibe to animators, the drawings themselves become the style of the Brave short.

Larsen said the work of artist Mary Blair, a frequent contributor to Disney films (and a legend in her own right) was a source of inspiration. “Going back to Mary Blair, we don’t get to flex those muscles all the time because we usually work in a 3-D animated world, so it just felt extra special that we could be in that painterly style,” the director said. “It gives it a texture — what you’re seeing is somebody’s imagination of this event, almost like a dream in some ways. It’s not real. It’s romanticized.”

With the Blu-ray/dvd release of this movie quickly approaching, I'd like to let you know that on Black Friday in the U.S., this movie will be on sale for $9 at Walmart (for the blu-ray/dvd combo pack). So if money is tight and you can wait until then, getting Brave then is an excellent chance to do so for little cost.

(I only post this because I have the situation where I can't afford this at full cost, but I can afford the Black Friday cost. Merry Christmas to me. :) )

Is there no "bonus" discs for Brave? I realize it's not getting the 2 disc treatment like most of the Pixar films have so far on Blu-ray, but does anyone know if a store is selling a bonus disc? It seems Best Buy, Target and Wal-Mart have other, less interesting extras.

There is an extras disc on both releases (3D+2D)

Really? Great to hear. Still, does anyone know if there are any extra promotional discs from a store for this film?

Not any that I know of (and I have followed this release closely). Target, Best Buy and FutureShop are each doing exlusives, but no extra discs on none of them.

Just casing? That's it? As much as I love steelbook and digibook packaging, Id've much preferred even a cheap gold coin(Which I remember target had a really good one for Revenge of the Sith/off topic)or some novelty item.
