Disney's Divinity wrote:You mean "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," right? I’ll have to listen to it later this week when I’m at someone else’s house. I can barely get Instagram to work here when it's just pictures.
Thanks for the correction. I was in a hurry and didn't notice. It's funny that the meaning remains the same either way though.

The same spot can also be found on YouTube.

A co-worker told me today that "The Lion King with real animals looks good." I had to tell her that it's CGI except for one scene (frame?) of live action background. Are you guys hearing a lot of people thinking it's live animals??

Only a single shot in the film is live-action.
blackcauldron85 wrote:Are you guys hearing a lot of people thinking it's live animals??
No, because real animals don't talk or sing. :P To your co-worker's defense, Disney has shown very little footage of them speaking. Maybe she thought they used a combination of real animals and CG.

With the movie opening in a little less than a month, I'm surprised Disney hasn't released a full standard two and a half minute trailer. So far, it's mostly been a pair of teasers and a bunch of tv spots. We also haven't seen many of the animals speak. Disney probably feels the Lion King brand is strong enough to sell on its own, but their marketing strategy is still a fascinating one.

I obviously have no proof but my gut feeling is that the reaction to the unfinished Genie back in February scared Disney a lot more than they will ever admit. I mean, they shouldn't have released an unfinished shot like that, but the level of hate that first look got was so intense some people pretty much wrote off the movie (which delightfully went on to prove them wrong).

Disney could market Lion King on Circle of Life alone, and pretty much have in the main teasers/trailers, so after seeing what happened with Genie why would they give the internet the chance to do the same by showing Pumbaa singing Hakuna Matata in the trailers? The reaction to the 50 days posters likely backed that up as well.

Favreau's delivered the goods before with Jungle Book, so I can't imagine Disney being worried about how the animals express emotions or how they look when speaking, but why risk showing unfinished/out of context stuff when the risk is there that the internet will savage them. Holding back certainly doesn't look to have done them any harm.

I also believe Disney is purposefully hiding footage of the animals talking or singing because they know it looks uncanny and weird and are afraid of an online backlash. I mean the characters were already criticized for looking emotionless and inexpressive, any additional footage of them speaking will make them look even worse. They certainly aren't going to risk the film getting more negative publicity so close to its release.

Soundtrack info is out with some curious details... notice TBA track 14 and Be Prepared is marked with a 2019 Version like Arabian Nights was. Also the new song is performed by Elton john, not Beyoncé, which is also a little odd.

Very happy to see they’ve included He Lives In You.
1. “Circle of Life”/“Nants’ Ingonyama” – Performed by Lindiwe Mkhize; African vocals performed by Lebo M; written and composed by Elton John and Tim Rice; “Nants’ Ingonyama” written by Lebohang Morake and Hans Zimmer; produced by Hans Zimmer; vocals produced by Stephen Lipson

2. “Life’s Not Fair” – Hans Zimmer

3. “Rafiki’s Fireflies” – Hans Zimmer

4. “I Just Can’t Wait to Be King” – Performed by JD McCrary, Shahadi Wright Joseph and John Oliver; written by Elton John and Tim Rice; produced by Pharrell Williams; co-produced by Stephen Lipson

5. “Elephant Graveyard” – Hans Zimmer

6. “Be Prepared” (2019 Version) – Performed by Chiwetel Ejiofor; written by Elton John and Tim Rice; produced by Hans Zimmer and David Fleming

7. “Stampede” – Hans Zimmer

8. “Scar Takes the Throne” – Hans Zimmer

9. “Hakuna Matata” – Performed by Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen, JD McCrary and Donald Glover; written by Elton John and Tim Rice; produced by Pharrell Williams; co-produced by Stephen Lipson

I'm surprised He Lives in You is included even as the second end credits song. Track 14 must be the movie version of "Never Too Late" performed by Beyonce.
Q: Is her new song still the only new song?

Jon Favreau: Yeah, it doesn't replace anything. We have all the original songs, but there's a song that she performed and wrote in the spirit of the production along with working with Lebo M., who's part of it with Hans Zimmer. They were all collaborating with her and helping to bring this new piece of music into a film where there's already a very established musical personality to the piece. So it was nice of them to have them working with her to allow the new song to feel organically a part of the new production.

Soooo....if HE LIVES IN YOU is in the movie anyway, why not do the character Rafiki and Donald Glover favors and make it a duet like the Broadway musical? And a verse from James Earl and give Mufasa a well-deserved solo?

And not even Beyonce gets a solo, unless #14 is that one? So glad they're not taking pages from BaTB and Aladdin and make this a 100% shot-to-shot remake, not improving anything from the original

A new character is included so it can't be a shot-for-shot. At least, not entirely. The directors said while it's more faithful than The Jungle Book, it's still a fresh take on the material. Whether that's accurate or not remains to be seen.
Q: Is The Lion King more of a straight remake than The Jungle Book was?

Jon Favreau: Yes.

Q: But are there any places where you veer away from being totally faithful to the original?

Jon Favreau: Well, we wanted to differentiate ourselves from the animated feature and from the stage production, but we wanted to still take into account that people have memories and a connection to those productions. So, the trick was to do something that fulfilled everybody's expectations of what The Lion King should be but still surprise them and put our own fresh take on it.

Some of that was through casting. Some of that was through the technology that we used. Some of it was trying to make the movie appear to be live-action even though it was completely animated. So we had a strategy going in to how we can make this feel like there was a reason to make it and how it was going to build upon what was already out there, but also still stay true to the thing that everybody loves so much about the original.

I'm glad He Lives in You is being featured in the film.

As for the new character, I'm curious if it'll be based off one of the deleted characters from the scrapped treatments of the original 1994 film.

The director explains why it was difficult for the characters to emote.
Q: What was the biggest challenge in crossing over the characters into photorealistic live-action? Movement? Facial expression?

Jon Favreau: We learned a lot on The Jungle Book, and one of the things we learned is that if you push the facial expressions on an animal too much it starts to look less like an animal and more like a human. Part of the naturalistic approach of The Lion King that would have not fit in with our tone. Part of it is trying to make the animals express emotions without facial expression, so like in the case of Pumbaa, who is a very comedic character who has a lot of facial expressions in the old one, how do you make a warthog comical if you can't make him make faces? You have to look at the reference of warthogs in nature, and you start to see that they're very comical in the way that they move.

So, part of it was directing the animators to express the emotions of the characters, be it the lion or the meerkat or the warthog, in a way that is both consistent with what people would see in nature, but also to express the performance choices the actors are making. So, there’s a lot of body language that was worked into this piece. What’s nice is that as you watch the film all together, I think it's very successful. But it definitely is one of the things that created one of the bigger challenges, to try to help bring the charm and humanity of the original productions into this without having the ability to manipulate the facial expressions and the naturalism of the animals to the extent that you could in animation.
