A section from the Press Release of The Lion King Blu ray that I screamed In Joy worse than when girls see a Shirtless Twilight Guy
A special two-week theatrical extravaganza kicks off Sept. 16, 2011, showcasing the Oscar®- and Golden Globe®-winning film on the big screen in Disney Digital 3D™ for the first time ever, and its highly anticipated home entertainment debut kicks off October 4, celebrating the Diamond Edition release of the epic movie “The Lion King” in high-definition Blu-ray™ and Blu-ray 3D™.

“‘The Lion King’ is the best-selling home entertainment release of all time—and this is ‘The Lion King’ like never before,” said Bob Chapek, president of distribution, The Walt Disney Studios. “The all-new 3D format immerses viewers in the epic settings and puts them face-to-face with these beloved characters. We’re showcasing one of the all-time favorite Disney movies in theaters and making it available in Blu-ray hi-def and in Blu-ray 3D—it’s the must-see, must-own title for everyone.”

Nearly a decade since “The Lion King” last appeared on the big screen, the upcoming theatrical release invites new generations into the “Circle of Life.” The two-week, 3D-only presentation is a planned wide domestic release—the biggest since the film’s 1994 debut—and the film’s first-ever 3D release.
and here's the press release

Im so glad to hear it'll see a theatrical release. I'm in no position to experience the 3D blu ray any time soon so I was really bummed that it didn't seem like it was happening anymore. Not only that but September is sooner than I was expecting.

Anyone else worried about:

a) the image and sound enhancements?

b) the animated blooper reel?? They are animating bloopers NOW for it?? They are gonna be off-model and stuff...a

and they dont mention anything about the bonus features!!

Does that mean TLK will get a 3D screening before BATB?

I forget if BATB ever got a 3D screening in the US or not. If not, completely wasted opportunity.

We never got it, no. But maybe they think the lion king will perform better, which, let's face it, it will. But if this does any where near as well as the toy story re release maybe it'll convince them to release Beauty and the Beast too. And anything else their converting.

And what if we want "The Lion King" like before? The version we love and know?

They probably re-animated many scenes anyway, just like they did in Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast. So they probably had lots of new animation anyway they could use for the bloopers.

The thing is, the scenes that ended up in that movies actually looked like bloopers, so I wonder if they are going to animate all the new stuff twice?

Is that why the IMAX re-release of Beauty and the Beast made $10 million more than the IMAX re-release of The Lion king?

It really is a shame, because saying re-animated just makes Marky look foolish.

If only he said "re-mixed" regarding the soundtrack. Then he would be right! :) (although of course that only really applies to non-US residents - the US releases still have the original soundtrack intact on the disc)

Thanks for your "input" but I know what I'm talking about. And let's not even get started on the whole messed up soundtrack thing.

I'm talking about the completely new Merryweather in the scene right before she gives her gift to Aurora. I've never seen that sleeve like that and face before, have you? I'm also talking about the new neon-green lines in Aurora's hair during "once upon a"dream". If they are not animated, then where do they come from?

Also, the re-animated scenes in The Little Mermaid (Poor unfortuane souls, the wedding scene, etc), the re-animated scenes in BATB (Cogsworth's "But...why?" etc), en the re-animated scenes in TLK (Can you feel the love tonight, I just can't wait to be king, etc) look like bloopers anyway. So they have material enough to put in the bonus features. Or are they going to re-re animate those scenes again but then for the 3rd time and let Cogswoth fall on his ass to make it even funnier? Or remove Merryweathers arm completely to make it even funnier?

My point is, for each and every release they can't wait to run back to the drawing table and change scenes, so it doesn't surprise me that this idea of animating so called "bloopers" came up.

Point taken, but isn't it possible IMAX and standard releases are not the same? My thinking is less people are willing to pay the IMAX prices, or even find a theater near by. Beauty probably draws in more of the type of audience that can appreciate what IMAX does for movies, but in your average theater I've always assumed the Lion King would be more popular. It certainly has more appeal to kids, boys especially. Its has a broader range of appeal. But I dunno, maybe I have it all wrong.
