"Cars 2" is produced by visual effects industry veteran Denise Ream (associate producer, "Up"; visual effects executive producer, "Star Wars: Episode III--Revenge of the Sith"). Oscar-winning composer Michael Giacchino ("The Incredibles," "Up") provides the electrifying score with a surf-rock-meets-spy-thriller flavor and a variety of global accents, evoking a sense of thrills, mystery and emotion. Brad Paisley, Robbie Williams, Weezer, French singer Bénabar and Japanese girl band Perfume lend their diverse musical talents to the film´s soundtrack.

The film features an all-star vocal cast including Owen Wilson who reprises his role as hotshot racecar
Lightning McQueen. Larry the Cable Guy provides the voice of Mater (proprietor of Tow Mater Towing and Salvage), Lightning McQueen´s best friend and the heart and soul of Radiator Springs. Bonnie Hunt is back as Sally, the baby-blue Porsche 911 Carrera whose motor races for Lightning. Acclaimed actor Michael Caine makes his Pixar debut as Finn McMissile, a top British spy who mistakes Mater for an undercover American agent with a genius disguise. Emily Mortimer brings charm, cleverness and cachet as Holley Shiftwell, a rookie field spy who knows every trick in the manual. Versatile actor John Turturro
gives a free-wheeling performance as Francesco Bernoulli, the world-renowned Italian racing champ who is Lightning´s chief rival. Tony Shalhoub, Joe Mantegna, Peter Jacobson, Jason Isaacs, Eddie Izzard, Paul Dooley, Cheech Marin, John Ratzenberger, Franco Nero and Vanessa Redgrave also lend their vocal talents. Seen Cars 2 at the cinema, and I laughed a lot! Much funnier and more entertaining than I had imagined. Will get this on Blu-ray, and maybe see it a second time at the cinema.

Since Cars 2 has underperformed by studio and industry standards, they'll probably cancel their plans for a third Cars movie.
Box Office Mojo wrote:The re-rollout of Cars 2 stalled. The Pixar sequel took in an estimated $215,000 at 2,043 locations, or around half of Toy Story 3's re-expansion on the same Friday last year. With $187.7 million in 71 days, Cars 2 will be the first Pixar movie since A Bug's Life not to reach $200 million, and it's also the company's least-attended movie yet by a wide margin.

540 million dollars world wide doesn't seem that low to me? Yes, it's not the big hit that Toy Story 3 was, but that was the better movie. Still not a flop, so Pixar's streak is still going strong :D.

The Walt Disney Studios announced today that the Disney/Pixar animated feature film "Cars 2," which opened on June 24, 2011, has earned $189 million domestically, ranking first among this year's animated features. The film has earned $548 million to date at the domestic and international box office, making it the 16th highest-grossing animated film in global cinematic history.

Additionally, on September 7, The Hollywood Post Alliance nominated "Cars 2" in two categories: Outstanding Editing-Feature Film (Stephen Schaffer, A.C.E./ Pixar Animation Studios) and Outstanding Sound-Feature Film (Tom Myers, Michael Semanick and Michael Silvers/Skywalker Sound).

A culturally diverse, comedic spy-thriller set in cities around the world, including Paris, London and Toyko, "Cars 2" has surpassed the worldwide box-office totals of other Disney/Pixar hits such as "Monsters, Inc." and "WALL-E."

Toy giant Mattel on Friday reported a 6.2 percent gain in third-quarter earnings helped by sales of toys tied to Cars 2 and the company's Disney Princess line. Quarterly profit amounted to $300.8 million, in line with Wall Street expectations. Revenue exceeded projections, rising 9 percent to $2 billion. Stifel, Nicolaus analyst Drew Crum said that was "well ahead" of his estimate of $1.94 billion.

"Not only have we continued to benefit from the strength of our core brands, but this year's big entertainment property, Cars 2, is also fueling momentum," said Robert Eckert, chairman and CEO of Mattel. Entertainment segment revenue increased 14 percent, driven "primarily" by Cars 2 sales, the company said.

John Lasseter defends Cars 2.
With the Cars 2 DVD/Blu-ray on the way, Mr. Lasseter broke his silence. [...] One matter he addressed head-on was the assumption by some that “Cars 2” had been forced out of him by Pixar’s corporate parent, the Walt Disney Company, as a greedy grab for sales of related merchandise, a central current of the negative reviews.

"I don’t know what to say about that," he said. "Well, I guess I do. It’s not true. It’s people who don’t know the facts, rushing to judge. I recognize my place in the Walt Disney Company, but my job, my focus, my deepest desire is to entertain people by making great movies, and we did that with Cars 2".

[...] Has Mr. Lasseter become so powerful that even senior studio executives are overly deferential and reluctant to give him unvarnished feedback?

Mr. Lasseter flatly rejected that notion. "This is not an executive-led studio," he said, polishing off a glass of white wine as Janis Joplin chewed through "Piece of My Heart" in the background. "We are honest with each other and we push each other. No amount of great animation is going to save a bad story. That’s why we go so far to make it right." He added, "When a lot of money is at stake, as there is with these films, there is the tendency to try something you know you can land. We simply don’t do that."

[...] Did the negative reviews hurt Mr. Lasseter?

"I typically don’t read the reviews," he said, not exactly answering the question. "I make movies for that little boy who loves the characters so much that he wants to pack his clothes in a Lightning McQueen suitcase." He added: "I reached deep into myself and saw what this film was about, and I think it’s clear that audiences have responded. It’s is a very, very special film to me."

I can think of four (five, if it's ruled eligible) animated films this year with higher chances of winning than Cars 2. So, not really a front-runner. It probably won't even getting nominated.

I presume that the fifth possible film is Spielberg's Tintin; out of curiousity, what are the other four you believe are more likely to win than Cars 2?

Rango
Kung Fu Panda 2
Winnie the Pooh
Rio

I'd also heard some good early word about Puss in Boots and it will be interesting to see how Happy Feet Two and Arthur Christmas are received, as that can factor in the category as well, along with any smaller films that might show up.

Yes, Victurtle. Care to ELABORATE why you dislike Lassetter?

Anyways, I've seen a lot of commercials for the Cars 2 Blu-ray and...

Well, they say that Cars 2 is the #1 animated film of the year. To be honest, I think that's kind of a major understatement. :(

Because I feel like whether a film isn't done in his own style, he fires the director, as we end up getting a watered-down "Pixarised" version (i.e. all action, little (he)art).

He's quite like Miyazaki on that respect. Firing renowned directors simply because things he didn't like their style.

Having said that, as I said before I enjoyed all Lasetter's own films, Toy Story, Cars and Cars 2.
