It's formal title for the US is Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea. It is Miyazaki's most recent film released last summer in Japan. It will be released this summer in the US and hopefully it will be played in enough theaters to make it eligible for Best Animated Feature.

Spirited Away's win was such a surprise. I hope Miyazaki can do it again! (Even if he doesn't care how his films do in places other than Japan.)

Oh, Ok. Spirited Away is the only Myazaki film I really ever seen. The animation certainly is breathtaking. I totally gotta netflix the others and go see this one if it's in my area.

Has anyone happened to find the Wall E DVD with the regular plastic case and slipcover? I would have thought they would be shipping by now, but I have not seen any in stores

A while back, I found that my local Wal-Mart seemed to only have two copies left in the "eco friendly" casing, and the rest were in normal casing with a slipsleeve. I know that those were the 3 disc version, and I'm a bit on the fence about if they had the single disc in the same casing, cause I simply have forgotten.

I think they're sticking with the "green" case. You want plastic, then get the Blu-ray, 'cause it's not with the DVD.

I know this is really late, but I finally saw WALL E a few weeks ago. Haven't had the chance to watch it a second time yet. Anyway, onto my feelings about the film:

I thought overall that it was one of Pixar's best (probably after Toy Story and its sequel, Monsters, Inc, and The Incredibles). I really liked Wall-E the character and how the plant that was found was used as sort of an olive branch. However, I thought there were a bunch of questions left up in the air at the end of the film. Like--where did all the food the humans kept eating keep coming from if all life on Earth was dead? How were they supposed to survive coming back without knowing how to plant, farm, or even stand properly because of their bone loss? Why only EVE and WALL E, as well as the mad robots, were the only ones with consciences that defied their programming? Etc.

Regardless, the film was hilarious and WALL-E was adorable in the beginning, though I don't think it quite lived up to its reputation. I think Up will end up surpassing this film.

I was at best buy today and saw the 3 discer in a regular case.

The plant shows that life could grow on Earth again. You can already see the humans standing up, I don't think it's the actual 'bone loss' (I know it shows up in the supplements but is it featured in the film that they're suffering from bone loss?), but more forgetting how to walk.
If you watch the closing credits it shows how the robots help the humans sow, creating wells and stuff. The Axiom still has the computer, so that could be used for further information.

I don't think they ever mentioned "bone loss." Rather, what happens when people become so obese that they are incapable of walking is that to much space forms between bones and joints and they can't support themselves anymore. So that is what needed to change. The space between their bones need to shrink. I saw a documentary years ago about a man that was so fat that he couldn't even feed himself anymore (he didn't have enough muscle to life the weight of his arm). The documentary was about his rehabilitation where they had hem start with finger exercises and work his way up to moving his arms. He would literally do clapping exercises and be winded after a few claps. By the end of the documentary, he was able to get out of bed.

While Wall-E is definitely Pixar's most realistic film, I don't see why anybody should try to search for perfect realism or credibility within the film. You can analyze it all you want and see it as a precautionary tale for why we, as humans, need to take action and not be so wasteful, but that honestly wasn't even a message the filmmaker's intended to send. On the Blu-Ray, they talk about how the concept was "the last robot on Earth not being shut off and the adventure that he goes on." The environmental undertones were just a happy coincidence. They came up with the concept before a global climate crisis was even taken seriously by most Americans.

Actually, just to make this a bit clearer, they did mention bone loss. When EVE is taken to the captain and he activates the video of the Buy N' Large guy (don't really remember who he is besides that ), the guy mentions that the people on board "may have suffered some slight bone loss," as he says.

I don't know if this has been discussed before - but is there not a DVD/Blu-ray combination pack for WALL-E?

That's disappointing if not.

I want the film, but don't want to buy the DVD now when I might get a Blu-ray player in the near future.

No, sadly there isn't. I would have bought this too b/c I knew I was going to get a Bluray player eventually but I just ended up buying the 3-Disc DVD set and probably will buy the 3-Disc Bluray set soon.

It did not originally come with a slip cover.

I have a question. How come the Wall-e 3 disc blu-ray is virtually non-existent in retail stores? I want to get that one but I'm not able to order online at the moment. The only place I found the 3-disc was Barnes and Noble and their's was higher priced and without a slipcover (thus purpose defeating). I've checked Fye, walmart, toys r us, and best buy and there's no sign of it. Any more ideas on where I can look?

Digital copies tend to be removed from a package after a while. Unless you really want that digital copy and pay extra for it, you can just buy the 2-disc Blu-ray.

Wall*E is premiering on Disney Channel next Friday, September 17th.
