Jim Hill isn't always reliable.

Disney Princess Enchanted Tales

Well actually Jim Hill also wrote another article saying they were going to only make one volume of Disney Princess Enchanted Tales ever since Sharon Morrill, the president of DisneyToon Studios, got fired. But with the other princess stories, like Aurora's second one and Belle's first one, having been worked on, I bet we'll get at least a second volume instead of wasting all that work and not making a profit.

things come in cycles

We have a classic case of Disney politics here. Right now Disneys' animation path is being lit by the Pixar Luxo/Cars headlights, which is good and worthwhile, but means that, for now, the concept of stories based on established characters goes into hibernation.

After the new 2D department gets its chops together, I expect to see an occasional new Pooh or Princess "short story" product eventually go through the system. Why not? The characters are appealing - all they need is a decent story and good (if not knock out) production values to make the new products work. That will also help Disney maintain interest in their existing product lines.

Remember CINDERELLA III, which surprised many as to how well it worked despite severe budget and time limits ? I suspect MERMAID III will also prove a decent product, given it's the last of sequels for some time.

(Incidentally, some of that Belle work, I was told, showed up in the DISNEY PRINCESS game world DVD, which has been out for some time. I frankly have no idea why the Belle project was shelved.)

I was in a toy shop the other day in the UK, (obviously) and I saw some 'Enchanted Tales' products. Puzzles, books, stationary, dolls, inflatible chairs etc. Loads of stuff! So it seems as if it's official; Enchanted Tales IS coming to the UK. Wooo!

That means it's coming to Region 2!

I just wanted to make a note that "Keys of the Kingdom" is often in my head ("Peacock Princess", too, but to a lesser extent). The other day, I was walking to class, and that song was completely in my head, for no reason. Luckily, I like these songs, but they're like candy- they're addictive!!!

That sounds waaaay too fishy. Lasseter...actually liking the milking out of the Princess franchise? :o Too weird for Lasseter to actually like.

This is Jim Hill we're talking about here. I wouldn't believe a word he said about that article.

he never said he liked them. It is, however, well-known that he originally planned to cancel all DTV projects except ones tied to a DCP line. whether or not that's still the case remains to be seen, but I really hope we get a Snow White story before all is said and done with.

Am I the only one that thought that Jasmine could've easily controlled those kids by calling the guards? :P

I mean, I know the point of the princesses is that they are kind and patient, but they are royalty first and foremost! They deserve respect!

Yeah, but she wanted to prove that she could handle it herself.

i don't think she needed to call any guards, jasmine is argueably the princess with the most attitude

Which is why it's so bizarre that she's letting a bunch of snot-nosed brats get to her. She was constantly snapping at people in the original and would dominate any room she was in. I find it hard to believe she wouldn't use her angry face and voice to get these kids in line. She's easily the most intimidating Disney princess, unless you bring Kida into the equation (Mulan's arguable; she can whoop anyone's butt, but her attitude's not as vicious as Jasmine and Kida's).

Future of enchanted tales

Well, given the current Disney animation management wants to kill Disney sequels (various announcements reported elsewhere on this forum), it remains to be seen how "future" Enchanted Tales will get through the production pipeline. Perhaps Disney Playhouse will make arrangements with various contracted animation companies to produce more of these outside of the Lasseter short/feature film channel.

Times have changed, and to make these characters relevant and appeal to todays' text messaging, cel-phoning, internet-hopping short-attention-span cultures, there had to be tweeks. Auroras' reputation of being a rather drowsy, inactive character might have inspired her producers/directors to make her more kinetic. Ditto Cinderella, who evolved into an action heroine in the last part of her CINDERELLA III flick!
As for Jasmine, she already seems to be the most physical and assertive of the Disney princesses - she actually punched someone out in one Aladdin episode!

As for animation "quality", it's impossible to judge much based on a jumpy, compressed internet video clip. Still, The colors and styling appear ok, and the characters seem reasonably on model (Though better than most, Aurora's design varied a fair bit in the __original__ film !). In a month, we will know what it's really like.

The franchise will expand in February 2008 with an as yet unnamed direct-to-video release focusing on the theme of honesty and featuring Cinderella and Mulan stories.

Ahh, you beat me to it  I found that a few days ago and posted it on my site yesterday. You can read my thoughts and why I still think Belle will be in the second volume with Cinderella here: http://www.freewebs.com/disneyprincessenchantedtales/

I know I haven't posted in this forum in awhile. I've been having a busy (but fun!) summer. I'll be returning as a regular poster soon.
