I am so sorry for my behavior to this movie. I attacked it in the past because I was jealous that it seemed to be the best and most beloved movie of all Disney films. I still think it is the best and has the most fans, but now I am ready to be kind ot it, and so, Beauty and the Beast, I owe you an apology. And yes, I can even now admit it is more of an adult/mature film than many Disney films.
However, that doesn't stop me from asking questions that I seriously am making because I'm curious, not to be a jerk to the poor film.
Okay, at first I picked on the film having an abusive guy get loved by a girl, but then decided there was nothing wrong with it because he changed before she gave him the chance to be loved. But now I wonder...do abusive people really change? Is good really in people that can finally surface? Because if that's not the case, saying it is the case is an extremely dangerous thing to teach people. Also, was he really that abusive? He just yelled at her, right? But he also denied her food if she didn't eat with him (and the servants disobeyed him). So, that is abusive.
Personally, from my experience, I know that people can change because I changed from a kid who yelled and hit and hurt other kids before, and I chose to become kind around high school (and have now become even kinder after my derpression). However, hasn't every kid at least yelled or hit or hurt others before, too? And my parents said I really had a good heart. I was no bully, I just was rather mean to some people some times. But I did bully my one friend Chad. Not a lot, but to a degree I constantly feel guilty for (he's no longer with us, though I was much nicer to him before he passed away).
I also have a friend who would yell and hit. And actually she still does that with her boyfriend, lol, they both do it actually, but I can see she changed from having a good heart that was covered by some meaness sometimes to having that great heart shine and be kind all the time now.
However, is this the same case as the Beast? Do my examples match how the Beast was able to change and he always had a kind heart that finally surfaced, even though the film says at first "there was no love in his heart." Did I quote that right?
I will say, for now...people can change, and the movie is right. But what do you guys say?

I think people shouldn't stick around to find out. Get out when there is an opportunity.
Saying that, though, in terms of B&tB, is that Beast does get nicer over time- Belle is such a great influence in him. By the time he's been transformed into a human again, the little glimpse we get anyway, he just seems grateful..
Disney Duster wrote:Also, was he really that abusive? He just yelled at her, right? But he also denied her food if she didn't eat with him (and the servants disobeyed him).
There are all different kinds of abuse. While he didn't physically or sexually abuse her, he definitely inflicted emotional abuse on Belle.

I think that young human prince Beast was spoiled, and obviously had an unkind heart due to him turning away the beggar woman. That's why she turned him into a Beast, to teach him some humility and to not judge people based on appearances. I mean, maybe he could have learned the lesson eventually without being turned into a beast, but maybe he would have gotten even more snobby, etc. Also, it's not like he was meeting new people; luckily Belle was patient and kind (I mean, it's not like both of them were treating each other amazing at first, but of course Belle was being held captive, so I don't blame her aattitude earlier in the film). Had Beast had a snobby person as his captor, maybe he would not have learned to love another.
I like that Belle is quirky and different from the other women. My mom complains about B&tB a lot, because she said "when is the girl going to be ugly and loved for her personality," but Belle is an outcast, despite what she looks like. So, another question would be, had Beast not been, well, a Beast, would he have fallen for Belle? Surely he fell for much more than just her looks. He needed someone to care for him past his looks, and that was what he did with Belle, too.

As an adult, I find the movie even more potent as an adult than I did as a kid, especially when it comes to the character of Gaston. I used to think Gaston was just the typical bully character you see in every film, but then I realize the difference that makes him stand out from those other characters is that everyone in the village loves him and even supports his deeds. As I have grown up and seen stories of men who act like Gaston, it seems less like cartoon villainy and more like he's kind of a realistic bad guy you could possibly meet in real life like Frollo.
I think the type of bad guy Gaston is even more potent in this day and age with men who have self-entitled complexes that make them think that women owe them something. Even worse is the fact that in real life as well, you have men whose behavior are actually endorsed by their community because of their high standing and they always side with them even when they do horrible stuff.

Thanks Amy! Yes, people shouldn't stay with abusers, but I do believe in giving them a second chance if they say they've changed. But then that's it.
The Beast saving Belle had her think maybe there was good in him and also that it was okay to go back to the castle to heal him. With saving her and then acting nicer right after that, it was okay for her to stay. By the time he was the prince, he had definitely shown her was a good person, that's why she broke the spell, of course!
I guess the Beast did abuse her pretty badly.
By the way, Belle was the Beast's captive, not captor. He was the captor, just so you know.
Yes, Belle was the best captive for the Beast because she was a loving, patient, kind person. Plus, she was "the one" for him! If he wasn't taught by the enchantress and and Belle, he probably would never have had his kindness inside him come to light.
Belle's insides were made important from the beginning over her beautiful appearence. She was her own woman who wanted to be loved for who she was, not in the only way Gaston could "love" her for her looks.
Jazzflower92, interesting stuff you said.

I don't think that I had thought of him in that light, but you're exactly right. The first case that came to mind was the Brock Turner case..."good ol' boy" can do no wrong, 6-month sentence for severly harming someone.
Disney Duster wrote:people shouldn't stay with abusers, but I do believe in giving them a second chance if they say they've changed. But then that's it.
So the second time, the abuser can hurt the person more? I stayed in an abusive relationship way longer than I should have, and I only got out when the violence got worse. So, no, do not give them a second chance.
Disney Duster wrote:If he wasn't taught by the enchantress and and Belle, he probably would never have had his kindness inside him come to light.
I think you're right! I think he wouldn't have had a reason to. His servants would have been there no matter how he treated them.

Yeah, I don't know why my mom doesn't get that, but I like how you worded it!!!

Thanks Amy! And oh, man, I am so sorry about your abusive relationship. I am glad you got out of there! I think I could give people second chances, but if you think they never can, that is ok, we just disagree and you could be right. I am so glad you didn't give him a second chance to get more hurt though.

"Belle" & "Be Our Guest" performed at the 1992 Oscars (it's in English, despite the title):

What a treat! But I wonder why "Beauty and the Beast" (the song) wasn't nominated?!

I'm biased. Loved the film growing up. Love it more now, but like I said, I'm biased.

It was and it won the oscar for best song that year. It was just performed seperately in the show by Angela Lansbury, Celine Dion and Peabo Bryson

You're forgiven, at least by me. And you're allowed to express your disdain (at least in a civil way). It's not as this is a fanboard anyway.

Aw, thanks. I wish all the Beauty and the Beast fans who were here since I was here could be here to forgive me, too. However I don't know what you mean by this isn't a fanboard? Do you mean this board isn't specific to loving the Beauty and the Beast film?

What I mean is that these boards are not just meant for fans or to only praise everything that is Disney. It's meant for objective discussions and opinions as well.
