Shortened online version of the Total Film article:

Peter Pan & Wendy will feature a complex Hook, director David Lowery teases

Will it be the actual songs or just instrumental versions of them though? The original's songs don't seem to fit in this drab and dreary iteration of the story.
It's true; at least I don't imagine the characters bursting into song here like in a musical. Although, come to think of it, there aren't many songs like that in the original. "The Second Star to the Right" and "You Can Fly" are not sung by the characters, so I could see them being used in the background. And others take place in natural situations in which people tend to sing, like a "A Pirate's Life" (which I guess is similar to a sea shanty), "Following the Leader" (a march) or "Your Mother and Mine" (a lullaby). If any of this last type is used, though, I bet it'll be a very shortened version of it. Or they could be just instrumental, like you said. I'm curious to see which ones are included and how.

I love Lowery as a director but I just see this as a mismatch. Neverland looks like the most depressing place ever.

I’m really not sure what the point is of this interpretation.

I feel like if I were remaking Disney’s Peter Pan the one element that would be absolutely sacrosanct would be Captain Hook’s design. More fop less flop.

Haha more fop less flop! I don't mind some differences but this trailer was so underwhelming I'm not expecting a good film.

I am, because of the Director, who was just announced to be an episodic director for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew when that series hits Disney+ later this year.

The first two chapters of the tie-in prequel novel about Tiger Lily are available to read on Amazon. I've read them and I don't think there's much relevant new info about the film in them, but one detail it does reveal is that Tiger Lily's horse is called Pony. A fairy named Sashi and Gee, a boy from her tribe, are two of her best friends, but I doubt they'll appear in the movie. Her mother and grandmother are also featured in the text.

There's some new info too regarding her community's ability to being able to choose whether to grow up or not. Apparently, it's not a decision they only have to make once. Tiger Lily, for example, chose to grow up from a baby to a small child first, then from a small child to a bigger one and now she has to decide whether or not to turn into a young adult. We don't know if that aspect of them will be explored in the film, though, or if it's just part of this novel.

The book's foreword reveals Tiger Lily and her tribe are the original inhabitants of Neverland, which I guess makes sense, but personally, I never realized that before.

Speaking of Tiger Lily, Alyssa Wapanatâhk, the actress who plays her in the movie, has been doing press for several Native American media sites. Among other things, she said they the filmmakers took inspiration from her Cree heritage for the character and her tribe in the film:
Wapanatâhk’s Cree heritage provided inspiration for the character and her people in the film to ensure they are grounded in authenticity and specificity, the filmmakers said.

“The filmmakers were looking for somebody who was obviously authentic (and) who actually comes from Native lineage — somebody who's actually Indigenous,” Wapanatâhk told Native News Online during a video interview. “They wanted to correct things to make things right. When I saw that, that was like a really big point for me, I realized I wanted to be part of this. I want to help out and be that person to help correct this thing that's going on in the world.”

Wapanatâhk said the filmmakers were originally going to depict another tribe in the film, but as time went on, the movie’s director, David Lowery, began to ask her if she wanted to bring Cree history and culture into the film.

“Once I saw them bringing Cree culture into the film, I thought this is really everything for me. And it's gonna be everything for people to see this,” she said.

They turned a stupid idea to something even stupider. A baby choosing to grow up?

The director talks about the film in a new interview:
With the live-action remake Peter Pan & Wendy, you are once again working for Disney. "The request to make a new adaptation of J.M. Barrie's beloved classic came from Disney producers, but I was immediately interested. Although there was also doubt, because I am a fan of P.J. Hogan's Peter Pan [2003]. A version that takes the story seriously, highlights the sexual tension between Peter and Wendy and also exposes a certain sadness. I wasn't sure I could do better, but the challenge intrigued me. Could I leave my mark on the story? Could I captivate the audience with a story they already knew? In the end, the only approach was the one used in all my films: pretend there are no other versions. Starting out with an open mind to tell the story very sincerely and enthusiastically, with respect for the story and for the audience. Without trying to reinvent the wheel. You cannot pretend to the audience that this is a completely new film. It's about the familiar Peter Pan and the known story, but hopefully through our passion it will take on an urgency."

The Magic Kingdom attraction Peter Pan's Flight is charming but, especially compared to the Star Wars and Avatar 'rides' in Orlando, old-fashioned. Did Disney see your film as the impetus for an update? "I don't think so, Disney didn't give any instructions along those lines at all. We did talk about it, but only about the fact that this ride is still incredibly popular. It's one of those attractions you can't touch. The old-fashioned - with models, puppets and shadow play - is precisely its fairy-tale charm. Before we started Peter Pan & Wendy, we went to Disney World to experience the key elements of the attraction and get the spirit of it into the movie. We succeeded, but at the same time it also became the most personal film I ever made. Somewhat surprisingly, it even became my most mature film. Beforehand, I thought Peter Pan & Wendy would match my desire for eternal youth, but actually it became a Peter Pan from an adult perspective. I am proud that a new generation will discover the story in this way."

Definitely a better trailer. Though still so dreary and colorless. The performances look more lively.

It's interesting a new poster wasn't released along with the trailer. This trailer focused more on the fun and the adventure, but the muted colors might've been quite a bad decision. It may seem a small thing, but I think it might've been one of the key factors why Lightyear, for example, flopped as they give the impression the movie is going to be serious and boring.

PatchofBlue wrote: Sat Mar 11, 2023 9:48 pm I've actually always low-key loved that Tink legit tries to murder Wendy in the animated film (and the source material too, if I remember correctly). I don't even think I could articulate why, it's just always been funny to me. I guess because it makes her a fun foil to Wendy's excessive politeness.

I think there's also something to said for showing two girls who initially don't get along only to realize that their rivalry is meaningless. (Max and El in Stranger Things comes to mind as a recent high-profile example.) That's something that I think is done a little more explicitly in the dtv sequel with Tink and Jane, but it's still there in the 1953 film with Tink and Wendy.

But alas, this requires some sort of nuanced thinking, and well, these remakes aren't exactly known for that ...
I have the exact same thoughts as PatchofBlue :)
I also agree. There shouldn't be any problem with them not getting along at first if they reconcile later. But as we are seeing, for instance, with the lyric changes to "Poor Unfortunate Souls" in the remake of The Little Mermaid, they don't want to risk having any moments they think could be controversial. So, you're right they might not even allow that.

The new trailer doesn't look that bad. It's definitely better than the first. As Duster said, it made a little excited to see the movie.

According to Almanaque Disney, Peter Pan & Wendy will have a new song titled "All Grown Up". They also say "You Can Fly" is the only song from the original used in the movie. Speaking of "You Can Fly", its music is featured in a new promo released by Disney. I wonder if that's how the song will sound in the film.

Here are also a couple of new official stills:

So, when that Total Film article said there are "several" songs from the original that are featured in the remake, they only meant one? That's quite disappointing. I wonder if more were originally going to make it, but got cut for some reason later on. Maybe in order to accommodate the new songs?

Seems bizarre to not include "The Second Star to the Right" and "Yo Ho (A Pirate's Life)" somewhere in the background, in the credits if nowhere else.

Personally, my reaction to the new trailer was about the same as with the old one. I think it looks good enough I might watch it once on Disney+.

Now that I remember, some days ago I checked the movie on IMDb to see if there was some info about the music and I saw there are some actors listed as "chorus pirate", and other people as singers or "children's choir" in the music department. All the songwriters of the original are also credited (Sammy Fain, Sammy Cahn, Oliver Wallace, Erdman Penner, Winston Hibler, Ted Sears and Frank Churchill), even orchestrator Edward H. Plumb.

IMDb isn't always reliable, but all these things might be clues that several of the original songs were indeed going to be included, as Total Film reported. The fan account Almanaque Disney has access to press material and is invited to press events now, though, so their info is probably accurate. That could mean the other songs were cut, as you said, Sotiris. I wonder who has written the original song or songs (I understood from the tweet that there'll be just one new song, but perhaps there are more and they just mentioned one of the titles).
