Do we know what Maleficent: Mistress of Evil would need to make overall to be considered a success to Disney? I'm guessing around $350-500 million? I checked both Wikipedia and BoxOfficeMojo, and can't find anything about its budget. I think expecting half of the first film's total is incredibly generous, especially seeing how Alice Through the Looking Glass bombed.

On the off chance they did get a third film, I wonder what they'd call it?

They need to have 0.5*[domestic gross] + 0.25*[rest of the world] > budget (probably 2*budget to really call it a success).

OMG

I just read that there are scenes where Michelle Pfeiffer is killing fairys with gas similar to how the Nazis did to the Jewish people and if that's true I really don't understand what they were thinking putting something like that in a film that's supposed to be kids friendly.

The first film opens with a scene akin to rape… I don’t think it’s a big deal. Besides, I'm sure most children are taught about Hitler growing up.

I've searched far and wide, but I haven't been able to find anything about the soundtrack. No tracklist, or even any listing on Amazon, Google Music, etc. Anyone have any details about the soundtrack?

Thanks :)

I can confirm this is true. If you want more details;

She uses the wedding as a trap, barricades the Moor folk into the church, and then releases the gas via the organ.

Cool, can't wait to see all the paid journalists claiming how this movie is totally innocent and how it should be seen by everyone unlike that eviiil Joker.

And Maleficent in these films ultimately isn't an evil character. I haven't seen Joker yet, but I'm guessing that character's not going to get a misunderstood hero re-write.

I just came back from the movie theater and I really liked the movie. The beginning was nice, the dinner scene with Angelina Jolie and Michelle Pfeiffer was imo the best thing in the entire movie (that tension) and I liked the ending. However, I didn't care for the middle section of the movie that much Maleficent spending all that time with her own kind, preparing for war, the queen preparing for war, etc etc.

Spoilers:

I did like that fact that there was no hidden villain, it was just the queen who wanted to kill all the fairies.
I thought the twist with Maleficent being the only offspring of the original Phoenix was a bit much, but oh well.
I was really emotional when Maleficent died, I thought OMG is this the end? But then she got reborn into a phoenix and well, just a bit much.
Also, killing of all those fairies in the church and during the battle was kinda shocking, and Flittle sacrificing herself to save the other fairies in the church.... I was thinking: is this a kids movie? This is no fairy tale indeed, Michelle!

There were some nods to the original animated movie, like when the 3 fairies were changing Aurora's dress into green pink blue and when Maleficent said: 'I'll see you at the christening' with a wink.

Overal, better than the first one.

One thing that did strike me as odd was how Angelina's accent keeps on changing. Other than that, superb acting. She carries the movie on her back.

Wow, I really liked that article Sotiris! Nice to hear all the work they put into the make-up and costumes, and I liked how their objective is that you feel what they did was the only choice to be made. I have to say, I hate like almost all Maleficent herself's costumes in this, and hate her human-bird kin... I wish they had given her more fairy-like wings and just made her a fairy that isn't tiny. You know, what's the point? I just wish for a live-action Sleeping Beauty anyway.

So glad about the fairies changing the dress colors WillytheDino!

Saw it last night and really enjoyed it! I'm predisposed to like it, as I am an unapologetic Maleficent stan, but there were so many things I didn't expect that made it enjoyable for me.

Michelle Pfieffer makes for a great villain. The film did a great job of really making you hate her, and ESPECIALLY made you hate that red-headed woman (not sure of her character name) who did most of her bidding. Oddly satisfying when the fairies threw her off the balcony.

Speaking of which, there were many moments in this film where I felt like they really went there, for lack of a better phrase. The fact that Conall died before the battle was unexpected, given that he was advertised a lot more than Borra, who ended up having a larger role. But I felt his death was a good catalyst for the Dark Fey and Maleficent to go into battle. I was very surprised when Flittle sacrificed herself, and remained "dead" at the end of the movie. And of course, the biggest unexpected moment for me was Maleficent becoming the phoenix. To me it felt like reparations for not making her the dragon in the last film. Sure, it was a "phoenix" but it might as well have been her dragon form. It looked close enough.

I really appreciated how much work and world-building went into this movie. The designs of the dark fey were very cool and diverse, and the costumes where stunning across the board. The acting really made you care about the characters, I didn't expect to care about all of them as much as I did when it came to the battle.

Should Maleficent 3 come to pass, I would imagine Ed Skrein will return, as I feel like they were hinting a potential romance between him and Maleficent.

From what I could tell, most of the soundtrack was re-used themes from the first film (similar to how Chamber of Secrets was mainly re-used tracks from Sorcerer's Stone) so that's probably why the soundtrack wasn't advertised much.

Oh, yay! Now I'm hoping we get a third one more than I was before, so we can see Skrein and Jolie in an onscreen romance. I like everything I've read in your and WillytheDino's posts, particularly the part about the phoenix.
