The new Disney Princess website is rubbish ... I liked the old website where the Princesses spoke to you when you hovered over them

Exactly! The whole Disney website used to be interactive. It was so much better than the current one!

Thanks for sharing. That pretty much confirms to me that the only reason these new designs suck so bad is because the "clip art" treatment they've been given. The original drawings themselves are quite nice, in some cases. Especially some of the Cinderella ones!

And then they go and ink it with those giant clip art lines, and color it and douse it in sparkles, and it no longer looks like the character.

I can't help questioning your taste on this one.

To me, the new clip art is worse than clip art usually is because of the design.

Wait, I think we're still on the same page here. Trust me, I still would prefer the old designs, and I agree that the new clip art is worse than the usual stuff. But I think it's only partly because of the design, and then partly because of the actual "clip-arty-ness". What I mean by that is that they've inked and painted all of them so FLAT, with thick, bold outlines and whatnot. They look like coloring pages.
On the other hand, I don't think the designs are that GOD AWFUL when seen in pencil. You don't like the drawing of Cinderella I posted? While it's not the best thing ever, it at least
looks like Cinderella, as opposed to some generic pageant queen.

That drawing of Cinderella is a re-do of this drawing:

But I must admit, the re-do is really lovely actually.

These drawings are amazing, especially the Cinderella ones. I love the new makeovers, but these drawings are exquisite!

This is where we disagree. While everyone expects clip art to be awful, I don't think the designs would look nicer even if they were drawn to a higher quality. You're right that Cinderella looks (more) like Cinderella in the picture you posted, but the dress and hair are still ugly regardless.

Hey....
I really want to see all these preparatory drawings... but when I go to that link, it only loads the first three, and none of the others.
Anyone else having trouble here?
Suggestions?

No, I just checked and it works fine for me. You just have to wait a little for them to load. Perhaps try using a different browser.

Gosh, Cinderella looks fab in the sketches.
I wonder how long these looks will stay, and either be replaced by the originals or some other new design.

I think Belle has now just made her debut with her new dress and hair, to match Cinderella ...

Of course. What it frowned upon is
hotlinking.

I had the same issue. I tried another browser, but it didn't help. It didn't matter so much to me to see the rest (

), but maybe someone else could post them for you.

See, this is why I feel the redesign may have started with the parks. Belle looks fantastic, and the overall reaction seems very positive. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the redesigns were done with the park characters in mind, then poorly translated to clip art.
While I agree with those that will say "the characters in the parks should have the designs from the films", you can't deny that both Cinderella and Belle look great if you just look at it objectively.

I agree, the costume does look good on the actress/model(whatever-you-call-her). But, to be fair, the before they give of Belle is a hideous recreation of the dress seen in the film.
Tbh, I think most animated film designs turned costumes look bad, because there are certain things you can make look good in a fake, animated world that just won't in real life (like poofy dresses and 80's hair). You can make clothing and even bodies look better than they ever could in real life. The reason the new designs may look hideous in the drawings could be because they're possibly the reverse? Designs made in real life turned into animated costumes?
I don't think the average person (non-Disney fanatic) will notice the difference between the costumes of the new designs and the original designs from the films if they were to see the new Belle/Cinderella at the parks, considering the colors and look come across similar enough, while offering some more freedom for the costume to be designed in a way that'll realistically look good.

Wow, I never thought that the idea could have happened for the theme parks! Makes perfect sense....I prefer the new Belle the park I must say. I hope Ariel gets a nice new green dress, made of floaty material to suit a sea theme....
Or maybe I'm over-thinking it!
