That compact IS gorgeous!!!! They should make a Cinderella watch/pocket watch just like that! In fact, THAT should be the kind of thing given as a gift in a box instead of the jewelry box or coach bank. Or a Cinderella clock like that. Or a Cinderella clock box where you open the clock to put stuff inside or it has the special book and discs inside, something like that. Or just a giant storybook that holds it all, like the Laserdisc and VHS did in 1995.

Hey everyone! I have something that's really exciting for me, I'm not sure if you'll care, but here I go anyway!

A while back I posted how Disney was doing new Cinderella books with new artwork, some even by former animator in Walt's day, Floyd Norman. Well I have picture comparisons to show how they really did do a re-fresh of the books, updating the artwork and making it more beautiful almost like they're "restoring" the old books and putting them in HD just like they're doing with the film!

You see, to my slight dissapointment actually, they took illustrations that they have re-used over and over again in many Cinderella books and re-did them to be better, more like the film, and, in my opinion, more amazing! Some of the pictures are astounding in their beauty and closeness to the film, for me, even so much as to remind me of why I love the film so much! I can't believe no other Disney film has gotten such...royal treatment, hehe, in the merchandise department, signifying to me that Cinderella is special and may indeed be the most popular Disney film, or maybe just at least among little girls, hehe.

The first one I have here is when the stepsisters rip Cinderella's dress. Here's the comparison of the old illustration with the new one (sorry my pictures are a little crappy, I didn't know how to size my scans right):
Image

As you can see, they fixed it so that the correct stepsister is doing the respective action she did in the film, Drizella is taking the beads and Anastasia is taking her sash. They were incorrectly switched in the previous illustration. They also added to the new illustration the red color that, if some of you remember from the Cinderella Platinum bonus feature the Art of Mary Blair, slowly built into the background in the film to add to the drama and emotion! And I really love how evil and in the shadows Lady Tremaine looks now!

This next one is of the pumpkin turning into the coach:
Image
Image

They made it more beautiful and detailed but actually somewhat less close to the film in terms of the character's positions. But they did change the coach to the correct design it is in the film as opposed to the previous illustration. The screencap shows it's closer to the film.

This next one is Cinderella running down the stairs and losing her slipper at midnight:
Image

According to the current restoration of the film, her gown color there is more correct. Speaking of, in all of these, Cinderella's hair is a more correct orangey brown color as opposed to the light blonde they so often make it!

This one is the wedding. The new illustration is just gorgeously beautiful to me:
Image

Finally, I want to show you the amazing, gorgeous, glorious illustration they did for my favorite part, Cinderella's transformation. The first picture I have is a mix of the coach transforming and Cinderella transforming but it shows what the old illustration of her transforming looked like. The second one is...omg omg omg I love it so much:
Image

It's almost perfect, except of course they made her gown much too blue and hardly silver at all! So that part's still not accurate or close to the film!!! It's like Disney did studies to find little girls have an extreme aversion to gray or white or something! EDIT: Actually, it looks like they did try to make parts of her dress the same silver it is in the 2005 restored film. So they must be commended for that.

Anyway, that's all the comparisons I have showing the beautiful, beautiful new illustrations they're doing for Cinderella's Diamond Edition debut! What do you think?

Thanks for the comparisons Duster. The new book is a Big Golden Book, correct? I wish they were putting out a new Little Golden Book, as I collect those ones...

Hey DisneyDuster,

Nice comparisons! I agree that the new ones looks better... couple of things be improved, but still leaps and bounder better than the old ones.

But as usual, I will ask what I always ask: no higher res images?!?!?!

Swillie, actually these new images are going to be published in quite a few new Cinderella books coming out this August and September (because the home video comes in October), and one of them may be a Little Golden Book. These aren't the types of illustrations you see in Little Golden Books, though, would you agree? Usually they're in a different, just for Golden Books style, like the original Retta Scott Cinderella illustrations from 1950. But if you like these gorgeous illustrations, I think there might just be a Little Golden Book with them.

Marce82, I do have humongous scans of these illustrations, just ask and I will pm them to you. The "before" illustrations are actually exceptionally well-drawn, these new illustrations are hit and miss in the drawing department, but the shading, detail, and closeness to the film they have really make these the best illustrations to me!

Check out the AMAZING treatment that Cinderella is getting at the Disney Store. Introducing the "Cinderella Premiere Collection":

Including collectibles, plushes, dolls, and costumes. I wish every film was given this treatment. I'm very impressed.

I pmed you the pictures Marce!

Wow Swillie that really is rather amazing! But can you believe out of all of that stuff, I hardly want any of it? lol If I was little again, the changing pumpkin coach would be the most exciting thing to me that I'd have to get it. As an adult, I still kinda want it but not with the Cinderella in a fake updated wedding dress that comes with it (though I could give it away). I'd probably be excited about the full collection of dolls, too, with the godmother and stepfamily for the first time ever in doll form.

BUT has anyone noticed, they gave the stepsisters the wrong faces! They should be switched!

But really I don't the things they did with the original poster for the film, probably mainly because I don't like that poster. I love the concept of the characters in the sideways title but I hate the drawing of it and the rest of the execution. But I like the pumpkin coach mug. And that transforming pumpkin coach and dress plush doll set is actually really cool and if I had all the money to spend I'd get that.

Oh and I love Lucifer so I am going to keep debating whether to get him or not, depending how much money I have.

They need to have stationary stuff with all the Disney classic posters NOW! If they had Ichabod and Mr. Toad, Lady and the Tramp, One Hundred and One Dalmatians or Sleeping Beauty, I would buy it without question.

Dear DisneyDuster...
You and I are kindred spirits: I actually found pictures of these dolls last week (nice close-ups too!), and I noticed they had switched the stepsisters' faces too! (Drizella is the one w the big chin!)
And I also agree that most of the products I wouldn't be interested in (the snowglobe is nice!).

And thanks so much for sending me the scans of the book! The illustrations ARE pretty nice...most characters are on-model (ish), but I think they contrast on the light is a little too high. Makes it look like there is always just one source of light, which is unlikely. It works on the more dramatic scenes (IE: Cinderella running down the steps, the sisters tearing her dress), or when there really IS one source of light (the brand new coach). But otherwise, they tend to overdo it a bit, IMO.

You guys should check out the Tangled book that comes with the audio CD... amazing illustrations, in a very painterly style. Super cool.

Thanks again DisneyDuster!

Yea I don't think most of that stuff in that "collection" is really that good.

Marce, I'm so glad you feel like we're kindred spirits, though I had no idea to now. I'm guessing Cinderella is one of your favorites while it's my top favorite. But still, it's great we can share and agree so much! Yea, Drizella is the one with longer, sharper features and Anastasia is rounder and has those big droopy cheeks!

Could I write to Disney to get the dolls fixed?

Anyway, I agree they are definately using the light in a probably innacurate way to make the scenes more dramatic. I wish I knew more about light in art to be able to tell if they're always wrong and that there should be more light sources or something. And I agree, they're always on-modelish but a lot of times at least one person in a picture is off-model while others I could say are on-model. It's pretty bad that the old pictures were more more on-model when they're supposed to make these new ones better!

I realized something though, I could flip the scans I linked for you so that you can view them the proper way. Would you like me to do that, or were you able to flip them yourself?

And just for the hell of it, here's one more picture from the crew that made these new illustrations, though it's not illustration, but a book cover. I'm just posting it because I think it's so gorgeous (and one of the best scenes!). In this one, everyone is extremely, beautifully on-model (except maybe the stepmother?):

Hey,

DisneyDuster... Cinderella is def in my top 10 disney movies. But the reason I said we were kindred spirits, its cause it takes a certain kind of mind to look at something, and automatically check whether its "on model", and to have a mental "model sheet" to know that the character isn't...or in this case, that the stepsisters' faces are swapped.

Looking at the old version of the book, yes, the new one is DEFINITELY a step up.

And don't worry, I was able to rotate the images. As for the light...I dont think they are TRYING to be dramatic. I just think in some cases it just comes across that way, while in others, it just looks weird (not necessarily in the images you posted so much, but the ones availble online for the book. THo the image of the wedding looks damn weird, lighting wise...Cinderella's face and most of her dress in shade...).

As for the cover...it's nice, but again, weird lighting. The windows are overflowing the image with light, to the point of burn. THe duke looks great... Cinderella is on-model-ish, but has an apprehensive look about her. And what is with Anastasia's weird hand/arm position!??!?!?

Wow that compact is AMAZING! Apparently there will be 2 more princess lines from Sephora(in 2013 and 2014), I wonder if those will coincide with the diamond edition releases for those years? If so that would mean next years collection would be Little Mermaid themed :)
This will be dangerous for me: my two addictions are makeup and Disney! :)

I am still actually upset about this release date in the UK; makes it seem like nothing special, pushing it out at the end of August.

I miss when Disney launches were an event....I remember when TLM came out (in November I think over here) and it was HUGE; trailers were all over the TV, posters at bus shelters, the whole works! Aladdin was much the same as well.

This just seems like a damp squib. The Lion King was huge though, and everyone was very much aware of it. I suppose the 3D release helped massively as well.

This release will still be very special. I know Toys R Us and other places will have the merchandise in a specially decorated section or something, and there will be lots of merchandise, posters and signs, and TV spots.

Marce82, I get it now. Yea we are kindred spirits in that way! But one way maybe we're not is that I like the lighting in the pictures and think Cinderella is very on-model in that cover! I still wish I knew how the lighting should be though. And I think they are doing the lighting on purpose to make it dramatic and exciting, as the old pictures never had this kind of lighting and shading. I will admit Cinderella's expression and maybe Anastasia arm could be better though, lol.

That might not be the case outside the US tho.

No Disney HE release in my state of Australia gets anything more than the rare TV commercial and posters in the Disney section of some stores.

No Duster, you aren't listening. There is nothing special about this release in the UK. Hasn't been talked about, promoted, and released in a no-mans land time on the calendar. I do not say negative things to hurt you; my upset it aimed at how dreadful this release is, when it really shouldnt be.
