I agree, Disney Duster, that I'd rather see an adaptation of both books that created a new plot to tie all the episodes together (which is, of course, what we all thought was happening when the plot was first announced). Still, if the script's first draft is any indication, we won't be totally devoid of iconic moments recreated. We still get lots of events found in the books (rabbit hole, size changing in the hallway, mad tea party, caterpillar encounter, croquet game, trial), just with different dialogue and contexts. So at least visually, it is like having a straight adaptation of the books. When more promo stills are released, I'm sure people not in the know will think this IS a straight adaptation since there are very few new locales and characters we meet in this one. I guess that's what the crew meant when they said it's both a remake and a sequel. It's a new story, but Alice retraces a lot of her steps from the first two books.

And yes, the 10/6 tag in the Hatter's hat is in the book. People tend to forget that he's a hatter, as is in he sells hats. The 10/6 tag is a price tag meaning 10 shillings and six pence. So, technically, his hat is constantly for sale. During the trial at the end of the first book, the King of Hearts accuses the Hatter of stealing the hat because of this (not realizing the Hatter's profession).

Honestly they've really got their own story to tell here, and while it is still Alice in Wonderland it's a fresh take on the story and characters so I don't think anyone's worried about cramming 2 books worth of info into one movie. Aside from that many previous Alice films have used elements, characters and story points from both books before and done quite well at it. Also the are a plethora of films based on books/novels out there that are excellent films while they do not include ALL of the details found in the original text. Though Burton and Co. seem to have tackled most of the "popular" or more memorable characters while also including several fun yet often unsung characters as well. Yes this is a different take on the story but I think we'll all bbe quite pleased at how well they do justice to the characters and story. For example: I've been a fan of th musical Sweeney Todd for years now and while drastically cut and changed Burton still gave us a film adaptation that was marvelous and retained the essence of the story and characters. From a devoted fan of the original - I was quite pleased with the final product.

Poster!

I think the poster looks interesting. I'd actually seen that particular picture (minus the text) the other week on the front page of a German newspaper (they had the Mad Hatter and Queen of Hearts pictures as well...which are also being used as images for posters, if you look more closely at Neal's link). I have mixed feelings on the tagline. On the one hand, it kinda seems cute in that they're referencing the animated version; I'm guessing that they might include the odd memorable quote and reference throughout the film anyway for old time's sake. On the other hand, a reference like this could make the film seem like a generic remake (which the live-action version of 101 Dalmatians essentially was), which might be damaging in terms of box-office figures, since one can tell from deeper research that Burton and company are trying not to do that. Who knows, anyway.

I always like to know your opinion on things Disneykid. I'm really glad to know you would prefer an adaptation of the original. I know if Burton did Cinderella, I'd hate if it was a sequel that retraced the original.

My hope is that in the flashbacks before the main story...they show...A LOT, and maybe even some flashbacks throughout the film, so the original's still in there. I wouldn't mind the first half hour of the film being a short breeze the Wonderland and the Looking Glass. Using my imagination again, I could see her going through Wonderland fast because she's scared, running trying to get home, and everyone's creeping her out, grabbing her, and passing her along. To fit into some kind of plot, maybe she's running away from her problems, just why she escaped into a dream world in the first place (she wants to leave because it turned nightmarish, and she must get home anyway, she thinks it's real, or wants to wake up badly), and little does she know Wonderland can help her actually solve them, though that Hatter is oddly comforting...

Well that's my wish. Will Disney make it come true? Doubtful! I have no idea how they would actually do it but something like it.

Theat Mad Hatter and the King of Hearts exchange is pretty funny.

Wonderlicious, I don't quite get what you mean! First, this is by Disney, and they are going to tell Burton they want some of their Alice in it. Though the designs are already a bit too much of a betrayal, unless Wonderland has really morphed and grown up (and twisted) over time, or because of the big changes the Red Queen's making, or because it's magical Wonderland of course! Nothing stays the same, I think characters said.

But anyway, anyone will know this will not be a generic remake by simply looking at the pictures and trailer. Any glimpse of this Burton piece looks the opposite of generic.

Just when I thought this movie could not get any better...

So I just went to see Transformers and at the theater they had a gigantic banner hanging from the ceiling for this! On the front was the Alice poster and on the back the Red Queen, which I thought was odd because I figured if anyone it would be Johnny or Anne on the back but yeah.

Helena looks awesome! Love they have the pig in her arms too! Actually I like how they are all holding an animal. And they used a hare and not a rabbit for Johnny, as it should be.

I wonder if Helena having a pig instead of a rabbit will mean anything. I haven't read the books, so I don't really know if those animals are in them.

The pig is in the book. A baby turns into a pig.

Interesting that the Mad Hatter photo is almost exactly like the one leaked several months ago, indicating that these photo sessions aren't all that recent. Seeing the Red Queen straight on without the digital enlargement of her head, I've now realized just how much of a clown she looks like. The pencil eyebrows with the blue eye shadow, white makeup, and large red hair almost make her look like your average clown, which may be intentional. The detail in her costume (and the others as well) is lovely.

It's a nice nod to the Duchess by having her hold the pig baby, but if the first draft is anything to go by, the characters have not been combined. The pig may still have another significance, though. In the script, the Red Queen uses animals as her servants. Among these are pigs who lie on the floor with their bellies up so that she can use them as footrests.

I also just now noticed the scratches on Alice's right arm, caused by the Bandersnatch when she first enters Wonderland. I guess they'll be there through most of the film since the Bandersnatch doesn't heal her until a little past the halfway mark.

I think it would be awesome if these were recent photos and the photographer (having seen the leaked photo) ran with the pose conceptually for the three as a bit of a nod to the leak. I would find that terribly funny!

Am I the only one who thought Helena's head was slightly enlarged for this photo, too?

Am I the only one who thinks it looks big already, somehow with her wig and makeup and costume I guess, and it doesn't need to be enlarged digitally? It looks great!

Well, it seems the White Queen actually will have a very detailed, and very beautiful dress! Though still more simple than the Red Queen's. She reminds me of Cinderella with the hair, dress, and mouse.

Her head looks smaller now in full view, but still big enough for me, I hope they don't over do it's digital enlargement in the film.

Thanks for the pics, nomad! I wasn't sure of the White Queen's appearance when I first saw her big reveal, but the more I see of it, the more I like it. The higher quality of the photos allows me to appreciate the details in the costumes better.

Speaking of which, someone on IMDb is saying that Disney's Comic Con panel for Alice will feature displays of the actual costumes along with designer Colleen Atwood's initial concepts. Hopefully lots of pics will be taken, and I'll keep my fingers crossed for someone to sneak in a video camera to film the footage screened.

ooo Colleen Atwood? Really? She did A Series of Unfortunate Events, and the costumes in that were exceptional. That would explain why these look so amazing. if only the teaser trailer would debut at comic con. putting it in front of half blood prince would be the best push they could give it.
