I enjoy quite a few reviews from DVDTalk, though they're mainly just the ones by Aaron Beierle and Holly Ordway. I've always had issues with the way DVDSavant writes his reviews, and the same with Todd Douglass (who wrote the Peter Pan review). Most of the time I'll agree with their ratings, so even though Peter Pan isn't as great as I'd hoped it to be, I definitely agree with their Highly Recommended rating, as the picture and audio (which I overlooked when writing my initial post here) are greatly improved.

Besides, it only makes me look more forward to UD's review, and the DVD (disappointing as it is).

Still...it makes me long for my wishful thinking edition from the Ultimate DVD thread to come true...

Yes, I never got to thank you, MadonnasManOne, for linking us to that review. I really do appreciate it. Besides, the positive thing about this, as Escapay said, is that this restoration blows away the old one. Just from those small screencaps alone I'm seeing more detail on Big Ben and much better contrast in Tinker Bell's glow. Despite my disappoint at the lack of Christmas show, I'm still looking forward to this DVD.

I doubt it. The BBFC hasn't classified any more material, and DVDTalk's review, while vague, still went through all of the features (except the games). The only differences we know, now, since I made that original list is that the music video is part of "Music and More" on disc two, and (the big one) there's no Walt Disney Christmas Show, after all. I have a suspicion that Disney's withholding this on purpose so that it can be an exclusive bonus feature on the Sapphire Collection Blu-Ray edition of the film in 2014. Boo.

Despite the vague review of the PE up at DVD Talk, I'm still getting it. I always thought the 2002 SE was sort of lacking in terms of a full audiovisual restoration. The 5.1 audio was definitely lacking, where the music and the explosion was the only thing to take advantage of the surround setup. (Not to mention it didn't include the original theatrical audio track...)

I'll get it, just because of the restoration alone, the additional extras and the addition of the original audio track. Remember when Disney used to make the audio tracks accessible from the menus only? It'll be nice to toggle between the new 5.1 remix and 2.0 audio and compare...

You're talking about the BBFC. That's in England! I'm talking about the USA. I think England (and other countries) have had a history of releasing two versions of PEs, one with one disc (the stuff on the first disc) and the regular two discs. Are you talking about the single-discers? Because us here in the USA don't get them. Maybe you do, though?

1. Disneykid lives in the USA. He simply uses the BBFC (from what I can sense, anyway) as a method to see the times (and considering Disney's crappy press releases, of bonus features.

2. Aside from Snow White and Beauty and the Beast, there have been no seperate editions of platinum titles in the UK. Just a 2 disc set. And considering that those titles came out around half a decade ago and that the UK is confirmed to have just the 2 disc set, it is safe to say that there will be no seperate Peter Pan DVD.

3. I think it's too late and too pointless (on their behalf) for Disney to go and add any more features to the Peter Pan DVD that's coming out in a few weeks.

Well, how accurate is the BBFC? Maybe Disney is keeping us in the dark on the full bonus set and we'll have a whole BOATLOAD of bonus. Maybe they're just keeping us in suspense. Perhaps what they have listed in the bonuses thus far are the main headliners and maybe there will be more, they're just not officially mentioned yet.

Well, how accurate is the BBFC?

Any material that is allowed to be screened in the UK has to pass the BBFC first, so the runtimes are *very* accurate and *very* reliable, except in the cases where the BBFC decides to make cuts to meet a specific rating. I'm not a resident of the UK (obviously, otherwise I wouldn't be part of the Original New Jersey Trilogy!), but their ratings system is a bit different from ours, with ratings like "12", "15", "18", etc.

Rarely, a few bonus materials originating in R1 gets cut at times. BBFC lists the "You Can Fly" featurette at only about 10 minutes, likely they cut out material in the beginning with the 1924 silent version, whereas in the US it runs 16 minutes. And the entire "Paths of Discovery" documentary for Brother Bear isn't featured on the UK disc (though that may be more with BVHE UK deciding not to include it, as I'm sure it did pass the BBFC).

But I use BBFC quite a lot, especially searching for bonus material on new DVDs. I checked it the other day, and they already passed the material for the new Ghost: Special Collector's Edition and the new An Officer & A Gentleman: Special Collector's Edition.

It should be noted, however, that even some material passed by the BBFC may not show up in the R1 release. The 2004 Phantom of the Opera had quite a few featurettes passed that were no-shows in our two-disc set, and the R2 Grease SE not only was a two-disc set (simply moving all the extras to another disc), but had about five more featurettes than the R1.

With the little amount of Peter Pan material passed by BBFC, I'm sure it's safe to say that's all we're going to see on the R1 edition. Sad as it is, and there's no one more disappointed than me.

I haven't been really looking forward to Peter Pan's platinum release, and this review only makes me less enthusiastic. My favourite part of the Platinum DVD's is the "making of" featurette, and since I already own the first special edition, I won't be getting anything new. It wouldn't be so bad if the other features sounded interesting, but they really don't grab my attention.

I'll be buying it, if only to add it to the platinum shelf, but chances are it wont get too many re-watches. Ah well... Here's hoping one of the department stores in my area have a "first day/week" deal for it and I won't have to dish out the $25.99 they request for the other Platinum titles.

Maybe you're right, but I'll believe what I see when the full review comes out on UD. Besides, I'm pretty sure that the Walt Disney Christmas Show is coming. It said so in the disc content.

Now, this is an interesting turn of events.

I decided to re-read the DVDTalk review, just to see if I was a little to harsh on it.

Interestingly enough, DVDTalk has taken it down, and under the reviewer's list, it's now an upcoming review instead of a recent one!

Try clicking the original link, which I thankfully found in my web history. It goes instead to the Latest DVD Reviews page. Unfortunately, I can't find the page in my temp internet files, so if anyone still has that page in their cache, think you could post the review, just for archival purposes?

Hopefully this means that the review was NOT complete, and that we'll actually see some missing-in-action features like the Christmas Show and runtimes. I could probably cross my fingers and hope that the "You Can Fly" featurette (which is still a no-show in the new BBFC classifications for Peter Pan) is the name of a 50+ minute documentary, and not a repeat of the 1997 featurette.

With the absence of the Walt Disney Christmas Show and no new passing for "You Can Fly" from BBFC, I'm praying and praying that DVDTalk jumped the gun earlier than Disney would have liked and tried to pass off something as an actual review based solely on what's been revealed to be available. It would easily confirm my suspicion that the reviewer *didn't* watch the discs, because the discs weren't available yet, and he was just writing something as a filler until the actual discs came in for them.

(It still doesn't explain the great new screencaps of the transfer, or the caps for one of the featurettes, but those could have been taken from other sources still unknown to us).

[1] The Christmas Special hasn't been classified at the BBFC for the UK
[2] Buena Vista Home Entertainment UK are rubbish at press releases and often inaccurate
[3] The Christmas Special is not mentioned on the only review of the US release published to date

the chances of it appearing on the US or UK release are about has high as the UK release having a commentary for Cars (which was also promised in a BVHEUK Press Release). i.e. zero.

What is more interesting is, like the commentary for Cars (which I guess will be on the Blu release, given the Chicken Little situation, so most probably has been recorded), this shows that Disney did "consider" the Christmas Special. So its even more annoying it's (almost certainly) not been included.

So, I was wondering when you guys think lighthousemike will post his preview of Peter Pan?? (that is, If he's able to get this DVD early and choses to do so). I looked back in the UD archieve (if you will), and he got his Little Mermaid DVD on 9/19 (or the week of). So, if the DVD's are sent out around the same time frame, then maybe he'll get Peter Pan next week, or the week after...?? I really hope that lighthousemike decides to give us a preview of Peter Pan if he gets it early...I enjoy his previews and they get me excited about the release. And honestly, with the news that we're getting and the "review" from DVDtalk.com, my excitement for this Platinum is really going down hill. From the looks of things, this might turn out to be one of the worst platinums yet. (only in terms of bonus features. Supposedly the tranfer is flawless). lighthousemike, if you're reading this, I hope you decide to purchase Peter Pan early and give us another one of your fabulous previews!

Umm, the inclusion of the Christmas show on this DVD is taken from the UK press release. The US press release never mentioned it.

The only source that even mentions the Christmas show is the UK press release and what Netty is trying to point out, is that BVHE UK often give wrong information about their releases. BVHE UK are about as accurate as a blind basketball player.

Well, aside from Snow White and BATB, most overseas PEs afterward seem to have all the same bonus features between them. So I'm pretty sure the Christmas show will be released in the US, too. Like I said, I'll see for myself sooner or later. But I'm pretty sure that it will be there, because this is a PE and pretty much all post-BATB PEs have the same stuff.

You name it, wrong bonus features, wrong running times, wrong language/audio/subtitle specs, wrong aspect ratios on press releases and on the DVD cases. Seriously I wouldn't be surprised if I bought my copy of Peter Pan to find that the film of the disc was actually Lady and the Tramp.
