Actually, I hear Disney's waiting until Song of the South's 60th anniversary (next year) to release a 2-Disc DVD. If that's the case, I'm really wondering what this year's live action 2-Disc will be, if we get any, at all...

Personally, I think this would be a great release. Tarzan has been out of print since January 2002. According to
The Digital Bits, 27,171,613 DVD players were sold from the inception of DVD in April 1997 through January 2002. Since that time, 62,948247 DVD players have been sold. Based on these numbers, there are now more than three times as many homes with DVD players than there were when Tarzan was thrown into the vault in January 2002. And I would bet that most of the potential buyers of Tarzan (families) did not have a DVD player back in January 2002, but have since purchased one. The same is true for Toy Story and Toy Story 2, although they haven't been out of print quite as long as Tarzan has been (May 2003).
Just like Mulan, there was no clear reason for this being put in the vault since it is not part of the original Platinum Collection or the revised Platinum Collection with Pinocchio, etc.
Tarzan has been unavailable for quite a long time now and its about time for a new release. I'm sure some are disappointed because they fear their collector's edition may now be less valuable. Well, that's life. If you're collecting DVDs in hopes of selling them for a profit, you're collecting the wrong thing (try collecting rare coins, or stamps, or baseball cards). Thanks to either new editions, new formats (whether it be HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, internet downloads, or some other means), DVD rot (which is likely inevitable), or something else, most DVDs will never be worth much.
As far as being disappointed that Tarzan is coming before Lilo & Stitch, I'm sure it's just around the corner -- possibly in January like Alice was, which is approximately four months after Stich has a Glitch. Until then, you'll just have to sit tight with the edition currently available.
Personally, I'm very excited for this release since I didn't start collecting Disney DVDs until Fall 2003.

Disney is SMART hands down!!! They know what they are doing!!!!! Let me tell you some things though before I get into why they are smart. Today I go to BESTBUY to buy Brother Bear, they were sold out!!! They had a lot of copies of ALADDIN (I don't know why this DVD is not doing so well, at least that is what it looks like).
Now onto my story about Disney and their DVD Business. As Bill W said before my post, you can see the whole reason behind this release. From now till the end of the year DISNEY DVD is really, really STRONG!!!!!! The list goes like this :
1. Toy Story (10th Anniversay Edition) Sept. 6
2. Cinderella (1st Time on DVD!!! PE) Oct. 4
3. Tarzan (2 Disc Special Edition) Oct. 18
4. Toy Story 2 Dec. 26
Now watch this patteren..........2006 releases MAYBE???
1. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (10th Anniversay Edition)
2. Song of the South (1st Time on DVD!!!)
3. Lilo and Stitch (2 Disc Special Edition)
4. Dumbo (65th Anniversay Edition)
I think this is how Disney see it^^^. I hope this is how it is going to be, what do you guys think???
Disney does not want to bring all their great movie in one year, so they have to spread it out, so annually they don't drop!!! They either stay the same, or rise MONEY!!!!
Oh yeah you can't forget 2006 for sure releases which are LADY and the TRAMP, and THE LITTLE MERMAID.

Call me a whiner, but now that we know Tarzan's headed for Broadway this Spring, why doesn't Disney release the Tarzan: SE then and release Lilo's in October? That way, Disney can cross promote the Lilo: SE with the sequel (they'll only be two months apart), and the Tarzan: SE with the Broadway show. The way we seem to be headed, Tarzan will be released too long after its sequel and too far ahead of the show while Lilo will have to stand alone with nothing to support (unless that's going to be the supporting SE for Lady and the Tramp, but I was hoping that'd be Hunchback).

Somehow, I am expecting Lady and the Tramp not to have a catalog release supporter; Bambi had The Incredibles, but that was neither a catalog title, nor could it be called "support" per se, since it was the biggest home video release of the spring and I'm sure outsold Bambi a couple times over. I'm expecting that Chicken Little will be the "support title" for Lady and the Tramp.
Hunchback will probably end up in May or so, simmilar to how Pocahontas was handled this year.
Lilo -- I honestly have NO idea. I do agree that it would make more sense for this to come out this year with Tarzan in the spring to promote the Broadway production, but since when has Disney been logical?

I'd rather have Lilo & Stitch as well, but as I don't have Tarzan yet either, and they are both inevitably coming at one point or another, I won't make a big fuss as long as one of them is coming soon and the other doesn't take too long to follow.
Wow! Took the words right out of my mouth! Ditto to what Aaron said. I'd like both, but they'll both be here eventually so I won't get too upset.
+1

Tarzan SE has been released, i have a 2 disc edition released some month ago in Eurpoe...

No need to worry, 271286, the
Tarzan special edition that is being discussed is the Region 1 special edition, which has not yet been released (well, it pretty much has, as the new SE is pretty much the old, out of print Region 1 Collector's Edition with just a few new games and previews and a new audio commentary). This
Tarzan SE has already been released in Europe, so this topic doesn't really apply to Europeans like us.
Oh, and to make you feel annoyed...the UK is getting the Special Edition of
Lilo and Stitch before the USA at this rate. Ha!

But will they have a slipcover?!

Muhahah!
Okay, just kidding!

Good, then the R2 folks will have to tell us how great the Special Editions are so we can eagerly anticipate them!

We only have to wait for Lilo and Stitch 2 for one week and Toy Story 2 for 2 months I could wait.
Lilo and Stitch no slipcover
Toy Story 2 slipcover....

Yes, well us Europeans don't actually give a damn about slipcovers. We bought
Bambi for the movie, not for the slipcover.
And anyway, I think it's fine that we get some Disney DVDs before you. I could rant for hours on how long
Alice in Wonderland: Special Edition took to come out, and with one disc of bonus features missing. I have a multi-region DVD player, but still, I should be able to buy products in my own country...
Oh, and off topic, I must ask about quotes and you. I don't mean to sound rude, but why do you always manually insert the "Somebody-or-other wrote" instead of letting the BBCode do it for you (i.e.
Somebody-or-other wrote: goes to "Somebody-or other wrote")?

Umm... I just like to quote the person it's more professional that way.
Well at least US gets some Disney DVD's ahead of the UK.

I was kind of hoping that they would release a SE of Hercules of Hunchback of Notre Dame. They deserve to be special editions.

Anyone wondering what will win at the top of the charts? I mean, if Stitch or Tarzan manage to beat Toy Story I or II sale-wise, that'll be a slap in the face to Eisner's theory. No...?

Oh yeah. But.....I have a feeling Toy Story is going to out sell the other movies.

Has Tarzan SE been confirmed? I can't find any repudiation or confirmation on the main page.
I am currently missing 8 Disney Classics: Pinnochio, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady and the Tramp, 101 Dalmatians, The Jungle Book, The Little Mermaid, and Tarzan. Only Tarzan is not part of the Platinum line up. Hope to see it released this fall.
