The Japanese disc have an option of being able to switch back and forth from story board to regular version using the Alt Angle button. I don't know why the region 1 disc don't include this option.

What were your impressions of both? I am really interested in Castle in the Sky? Everything I read seems to be all over the place. Some people love it and proclaim it one of Miyazaki's best, some people think it's one of his lesser works, and still others (Entertainment Weekly, specifically) said it was a beautiful show, but too inacessible in terms of the amount of Japanese culture involved for an American audience.

My opinion is Castle in the Sky was better then Princess Monokoke.
Castle in the Sky is my favorite Miyazaki movie.

I have never seen a Ghibli movie and might decide to rent one. Which would you suggest I should rent?

You should rent Castle in the Sky, Spirited Away and Kiki's Delivery Service first Nala.

Well I would say that Kiki's Delivery Service is the most "kiddyish" film of the lot. (sorry don't mean to offend but that's the best word I could think of) And If you do get Kiki it is nothing like any of the others in my opinion. I don't think watching Kiki first would give you an idea about what Ghibli is really about. I would say Go for "Spirited Away", "Castle in the Sky" or "Princess Mononoke First".

Spirited Away. I would say go for My Neighbor Totoro but the only available version is the Fox DVD which only has the dub and is in foolscreen...

Well, if you really want to be a purist dubbing is also bad.

I actually thought the dub for both Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro weren't that bad.

The Castle in the Sky one was pretty atrocious though.

Yeah, I've only seen previews, and the boy's voice seems a little mature for his age.

Also, I think Little Red Henski was not referring to the quality of dubs, but the idea of dubs itself. In a way, it's direspectful to the culture that created the film. Personally, I don't see what's so hard about reading subtitles, but that's just me...

You gotta remember though, the Ghibli movies are really aimed at kids. I don't like dubbing and watch the subbed version if I can, but if I'm watching with my niece (who's 4) I dont think that she would get it at all, if it werent for dubbing.

1) The great majority of Ghibli movies are not aimed at kids. They aimed at a much older audience than Disney, Dreamworks and Pixar.

2) I like the dubs. They have put a good deal of effort into matching the voices to the faces.

Just noticed on the front page that Disney has released a six pack of movies that includes Princess Monokoke but not the Cat Returns so I guess they do consider it as a released movie.

I don't like subtitles. They annoy me. I prefer films spoken in my first language, english. This is only true for non-american animated works.
