I've gotta say I'm sure there are a fair amount of folks out there that do NOT know these are bootlegs.

Think about it.

Someone out in the middle of Nebraska that does not have access to large chain stores...if they want a DVD it's Wal-Mart or the internet. They want a Disney movie, it's not at Wally World...so they check eBay and voila.

All it takes is one ignorant consumer (and I don't mean "ignorant" in a bad way, I mean uniformed) and that's a sale.

Yeah, and it is not just people in the middle of nowhere.
If you really don't follow Disney releases (which is most of the sane population :P), then you wouldn't know what is out of print, in print, release windows etc. A lot of people just assume that if they've seen a movie it is on video/DVD. So of course you'll buy it if you see it for a reasonable price on eBay.

It is a shame - but having said that, those bootleggers will be getting a version closer to the original release than the Platinum release will be (as they are generally "fiddled" with).

Ah, sweet irony...or something...

Well, Cinderella will be the uncut and unedited original release, I think. Since this is a Walt-era movie, they won't fiddle with it. They may have sequelized it (cough) but they won't change it.

You are probably right - Snow White wasn't fiddled with, was it? Let us hope the Cinderella and other Walt-era Platinums are as good as that set, eh? They've proven to us with that and Sleeping Beauty that they can do it. But given the age of the film, a restoration will probably take place (hopefully), and you can never be too sure if restoration will mean "fiddling" with these people...

I have Cinderella on DVD

I bought a Cinderella DVD off eBay last February. It is a bootleg, but it is proffesionally done. I believe they used the Cinderella LaserDisc as the source. The picture is pristine, however, the sound is somewhat quiet. You have to turn it up. I also have a DVD version of Bambi done the same way. I paid abouy $25.00 each for them. All I need is Aladdin and I will have every Animated Disney movie on DVD from Cinderella through Treasure Planet.

Bond: "Do you wan't me to talk?"
Goldfinger: " No Mr. Bond, I want you to die."

Doesn't it bother you that you're buying a fake?

Don't you feel guilty that you did this. I mean I sure would.

I have also been tempted to buy these bootlegs since I now have all the real DVDs that are out there to get. But it is wrong and you are supporting a bad buissiness when you do buy these.

The only two disney copyes I have are "Song of the South" and "Secrets of the Pirates' Inn". Both will probably never see a DVD release, but if they do I will have a sermonial burning of the copyes.

Do bootlegs have menus or does the movie just play?
And when in the world did Disney make laser disc versions of movies? I've only seen one laser disc and that was when I was in second grade. I recall it looking like a CD the size of a record.

yup, its people like that, that would increase amount of bootleg dvd i on ebay.. high demand so of course, the people in china would then go ahead and produce their dvd, if you never been to HK/CHINA, you will be surprised how well they can make a bootleg DVD, they will give you the whole works, a dead give away is that for some strange reason, ASIAN dvd developers tend to think putting DTS in everything would make it more attractable even though its not TRUE DTS

When I originally purchased Cinderella and Bambi from eBay, I did not know they were bootlegs. I figured they were from another region. The DVD covers were very good. They looked legit. When I received them I figured they were bootlegs. They have menus, subtitles, etc., just like a real DVD. I have no regrets buying them. When the "official" Disney versions are released, I wil buy them.

I hate waiting for those movies to come out on DVD. I am still kicking myself for not picking up a Disney Anthology that had a handful of the DVDs out there that I still need for my complete set. I had it in my hand a few years ago, before I started being a 'serious' collector. That said, I will gladly wait for an authentic Disney version.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune, but as they say, "Fool me once. shame on you, fool me twice shame on me."
The only place to get the "real deal", is through traditional brick and morter stores, or reputable online dealers like amazon, who you know deal directly with distributors such as buena vista. As has been mentioned on this site, be wary of Amazon Z-shop and auction sellers.

I have gotten some great deals on Ebay like some of the Treasures, but if you want to shop on Ebay only buy from sellers with GREAT feedback ratings. Also look for things like factory sealed and Region 1. Those are pretty good indicators that you're getting the real thing.

do you still have the link to the auctions you won, so we can keep our eye out for it.. yeah there are alot of bootleggers on EBAY, remember to cross out any auction that regions in CHINA.. and of course, asking questions to the seller about the dvd is always good..

I just won an auction for Tarzan Collector's Edition SEALED for $46, hope its authentic

If you complain to Amazon about their "used market" sales, I believe they will force a refund if you are sold a bootleg. Takes one month. But is effective.

Ballzo,

You are not the 1st and definitely not the last. You should post the links on this forum and ask for suggestions if this is the "real" thing. Most likely if you paid a cheap price for them , then they are fake. Although, I have heard of other ppl who paid a lot and still got a fake. And I will say again, you have to be ready to shell out at least $35 bucks and up if you want authentic. No one with a brain will sell it for less. That's the plain truth!

What specific titles are you looking for ?
