I'd honestly never thought of that possibility before, probably because I'd actually seen the made-for-TV sequel "Splash Too" before the original movie. I suppose that yes, you could make the conclusion that the Tom Hanks character is in effect killing himself, but I always thought that he was kept "alive" by Madison in the water by holding hands with her (sort of like an osmosis oxygen system). :D

While I certainly believe people should be free to believe whatever the heck they choose...I personally think that's a ridiculous take on the ending. I think the movie clearly established he received a magic kiss from Madison and was able to breathe under water from then on out. This is not some deep psychological Darren Aranofsky film like "Black Swan". It's a simple 80's fairy tale/romantic comedy.

Now if you wanna talk about suicide in a Disney movie, there is always Herbie the Love Bug's attempted bridge jump we can analyze

The only thing Tom Hanks killed was his life on land.

Just a heads-up, as I don't think it has been mentioned here previously; Splash has been released to blu-ray in Australia. It is region free and is available from sellers on ebay and third party on Amazon. Not purchased yet myself but intend to. Hopefully this will be the start of more live action catalogue titles from the Disney vault!
