Wow Walt Forever, you have a huge collection! I should have the box set in two weeks.

I just won a bid on The Lion King CAV deluxe box set. I only paid $6.00 USD. The set originally cost about $125 USD. What a deal! Now I just need a laserdisc player that can play CAV discs.

If you have a LD player at all, I think it should be able to play CAV discs.

I have the Pioneer Elite CLD-79, and it is a very good performer. For the most bang for your buck, I would go with the Pioneer CLD-D704, which is a CLD-79 without the Elite label. They go on eBay routinely for $200-250.

I've seen some players for $6 - $25.

I might buy Toy Story on laserdisc if I can find a good deal.

Thanks for sharing the links. Hopefully the pages have information about audio hookups. Once I see the back of the player, I should be able to figure out how to connect it to my 5.1 DD / DTS home theatre receiver. My reciever does have 5.1 analog (RCA), L/R inputs and the usual coxial and optical inputs, but no RF inputs.

Trust me... If the player is in good working order, the auction that you speak of will go much higher than $50. Count on $200, or thereabouts. eBay is really hit-or-miss when it comes to getting a player that is aligned correctly. If the shipping service (USPS, UPS, FedEx, etc.) is not careful with it, then the laser can become misaligned with a simple drop of the packing box on the ground. If you do win a player, always insist that the seller double-boxes the player for added cushion.

Avoid these like The Plague, unless: 1. you don't give a crap what the image looks like; 2. the player is a Pioneer CLD-1010. The 1010 can be had for in this price range and is a good performer, but it only has analog audio outputs (no DD 5.1 or DTS) and is single-sided (no auto-flip).

I would only go for the DTS release on LD, if I was you, for two reasons: 1. If you get the DD 5.1 (AC-3) release, you will need an RF-demodulator to decode the right analog track to DD 5.1 (AC-3). RF-demodulators are pretty pricey these days and may cost more than the LD player, itself! 2. The current DVD does not have a DTS track (I'm hoping that the 10th Anniversary DVD release will have a DTS track, though), and therefore the DTS LD is more enjoyable to watch/listen to than the current DVD IMHO.

Then DEFINITELY get the DTS Toy Story release. You won't need to decode the DTS digital bitstream with anything but your receiver. Remember, if you want DTS, then you will need a player with digital audio outputs (Toslink or coaxial). All of the players recommended in the two links that I provided to you earlier in this thread have digital audio outputs; I guarantee you that the $6-25 player you cited above won't have digital audio outputs... or if it does, the picture quality will be horrendous.

I have a huge laserdisc collection. My dvd collection though is beginning to catch up. I have a pioneer player that was one of the last that combined laserdisc with dvd. I was able to enjoy both worlds.

I still think the laserdisc boxsets are more about the quantity of bonus materials than the latest dvds which are still good.

When i opened my pochahontas 10th anniversary dvd i was surprised to see the making of taken directly from the laserdisc set (something i wish they would have done for lion king) the scene they put back into the movie i saw on my laserdisc set when it came out unfinished but available only on the boxset.

I still enjoy my laserdiscs too bad they did not go over well

I've seen the Pioneer CLD-D704 Laserdisc Player for $50. The shipping and handling charges are about $20 - $30.
