Actually, I think we also agree that Snow White is not only great for it's historic accomplishments but also for setting the "standard" for films to come. When I first saw it (which was this summer), I was amazed to find that everything Disney gets teased about is in this movie. And that's not a bad thing. It shows that it's a well known format which became the foundation upon which many movies since have been made.

When I said it's "not that great a movie" I meant it's flawed in terms of the actual story and pacing; it tends to drag in many places. It's not the most appealing Disney fairy tale to me. Considering the time, you can't really blame it, though. Also that it's gained more flaws over time considering the changes in social values, like you said. One could look at it as showing the ideal female to be an overwhelmingly sweet, vulnerable girl who loves to clean, hides her feelings with "a smile and a song"* to get through life, and is beloved by all, animals and dwarfs alike. However, I don't look at it that way, I just see how someone could. To it's credit, the animation is beautiful and it certainly was a great first step into feature film animation. I certainly don't think it's bad. In fact, on another thread I was mentioning that I might be owning the DVD soon.

*BTW, I like the song, "With a Smile and a Song".

On the contary there's lots of reasons why Disney DO need to do this - sometime in the next decade or so anyhow.

Disney cannot rely on the copyright period being extended again (although I expect it will) and Disney also must act aggresively to protect their trademarks (which also includes continuing to keep the trademarks in the public eye (every seven years I think off the top of my head) either by rereleasing existing works or making new ones and reregistering them) Don't forget trademarks not only include words and logos, but character designs too.

If Disney don't do this, they could find the come 2023 or whatever, if at the last minute a copyright extension doesn't go through for whatever reason, Snow White and their Characters would become public domain. And then you'd be faced with the possibility of crappy "cheapquel" after "cheapquel", not even from Disney.

(Its the same logic as the Peter Pan sequel being written and published next year. Although of course, we know that logic is being challenged in the courts as I type)

Wouldn't re-releasing the DVDs (or HD-DVD, etc) every so often serve the same purpose? As it stands now, Disney's moratorium is only for 5 years (at least for the Platinum titles.)

I'm pretty sure it would protect trademarks, but when (if) the time comes, it wouldn't protect copyright. Even restorations only protect the copyright of that version, not the original.

The whole copyright issue if clouded. It will be interesting to see what the outcome of the Peter Pan case finally is. To sum up, the holders of Peter Pan claim that while the original short stories that introduced the character may be public domain, which people can copy and distribute at will, the actual characters and their destinies are still copyright as existing works featuring the same characters are still under copyright. If this is the case, by writing a new story before this copyright expires, they are basically stopping anyone else writing a new Peter Pan story for another 70 years.

It should be noted that perhaps there is some merit to this theory. Lots of Looney Tunes cartoons are in the public domain, including some Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny ones, but so far, nobody has attempted to make new, non-Warner Daffy Duck or Bugs Bunny cartoons claiming the characters are Public Domain. So it would appear the same would be true if Disney did make a Snow White sequel before the copyright expired.

Technically Disney's Pete character is public domain (being as he first appeared in the now Public Domain Alice shorts). Again, I doubt any non-Disney Pete shorts will be made.

At www.gaygaybrad.com, I read that Snow White II was cancelled!! It was because of the protests from Disney fans. OH THANK YOU!! I'm so happy!! LOL

Im glad if its true, but why did they listen this time and not any other times when it came too sequels.....i cant see the reason for them cancelling it was because fans were not happy due too many were unhappy about every other film they made a sequel too...

That's good news for Snow White but i'm not sure that link is to a disney news site I think Disney should stop continuing titles that were successful at first and maybe concentrate on new, original ideas I don't think any of their "cheap-quels" have the slightest bit of power to get them back into the "blockbusters" like mermaid did for aladdin and beauty and the beast. although some of thier CGI pictures are doing well(Incredibles, nemo, monsters) they should definetly stop beating the classics around.

Well this is good so now maybe they could just remake it in full CG! Now there's an idea to worry fans too.

Hmm... is this the page you're referring to? Because 1) being a personal website, any (especially non-sourced) information has got to be taken with a grain of salt, and 2) word about Snow White II's cancellation has been common knowledge (at least among Disney nuts ) for a while now. Could it be that the Disney head honchos finally grew a bit of a conscience? Or some common sense? Who knows!

Well, Dumbo II was cancelled too.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not all for them making the sequel, but, I don't think sequels are the worst thing in the world...it's not like they ruin the original movie.

People just want something to complain about.
