In retrospect, I bet they wish they had tried to be less dismissive of it. They went for a little laugh, but yet a few years later, the final project would be materialized.

I really don't know how Disney could go about releasing these short films. On their own? Not likely. Together? Maybe, with additional things. They might just pop them onto unrelated DVDs the way they did with "One By One" on Lion King II.

I wonder if/how/when the short will come out on DVD? :?

I saw Lorenzo this past early-October in Ottawa and in my opinion, it's one of the better Studio-produced theatrical shorts that I can think of since the early 90's. I'm sure Disney will find a way to issue this to DVD sooner than later... It got standing ovations from the crowd at this years OIAF and Im sure the fact that Roy Disney produced it was no coincidence either. Here's a nice overview complete with pencil sketches and captions.. http://www.animationartconservation.com/lorenzo.html The abstracted layouts and background designs are beautiful and the character animation is truly top-notch! I loved the deep saturized color hues and stylized designs, though it's been months since I've seen it I remember thinking of the siamese cat sequence from Lady And The Tramp at certain parts. I'm looking forward to wathcing this again on DVD.

Thanks for the information FantasiaMan. I really hope Disney does release these. I'd love to see all of them.

Your welcome Teen Artist.

I would also like to say that Fantasia is my all-time favorite film, it's unfortunate that they did scrap the next Fantasia though. One by One, Lorenzo & Destino would have definetly had a place in that film. Lorenzo could have probably been the next Carnival of the Animals, or could have possibly been the next great Disney character.

He would make a great plush toy.

WHEN CAN WE SEE LORENZO ON DVD??

I'm dying to see this! For once it looks as if 21st Century Disney got a project right, so when can we lucky peons get our hands on it on DVD? Or for that matter, Destino? Any info from you guys out there??

Hi Maxey, welcome to the forum! :eye:

I don't have any answer for you, but my speculation and some others, plus discussion of the short can be found in a recent thread, which I've merged your post with.

No problem and thanks for the welcome. I've been a bit of an observer for quite awhile and well...being the animation nut that I am I figured it was about time to jump into the fray, as it were. Hope that "Lorenzo" surfaces soon...judging from the screen captures I've seen, it looks absolutely wonderful and a real breath of fresh air amongst all the "cheapquel" pollution alerts the House of Mouse's been bombarded us with these past few years....SHUUUDDDER! Anyway, I'll be popping in from time to time!

Hey, I just found out that a DVD containing shorts like Lorenzo and Destino will be released on DVD soon, this is in the words of Mike Gabriel on an interview with AWN.

"And for those who missed it theatrically and can’t get their hands on a preview copy, there’s good news from producer Baker Bloodworth. Disney is planning a compilation DVD “featuring shorts like Lorenzo and Destino.” Now that it has lit its tiny corner of the collective moviegoing radar, and with the Oscar nomination to boot — always a great hook for the cover of any consumer product — Lorenzo, it seems, stands a chance of hitting the home video arena soon. eleased sometime in the near future."

Can't wait! :D

Could it be in Dinsye Rarities?

Thanks for passing along the good news, FM. Let's hope it pans out. Disney Rarities sounds vague enough for these two to fit, even if the name conjures up long-lost cartoons.

Even though I didn't see Lorenzo or Destino, I think they are both great pieces of work. I hope that Lorenzo will win the Oscar, but I guess we will all find out on Sunday, right?

Also, Mike Gabiel said that possibly there might be Lorenzo merchandise coming out. It would make a great plush or even a WDCC sculpture.

Actually, I saw Ryan today, FM. And believe me, it was a great short. Very innovative and profound. As much as I'd hoped Lorenzo to win, I can fully understand why Ryan got it instead. Between the two, I think I'd probably choose Ryan, truth be told. I just thought it was that good.

I think 'Ryan' is amazing from what I've seen and I'm glad it won but I don't need to repeat what I have said in another topic.

I first and foremost cheer for any Canadian/ NFB short and then Disney but this year I was very happy with what NFB has released. *sighs* I wish more people would watch some of the great classic NFB animated shorts. Leonard Maltin actually has a video out there presenting NFB shorts much like the Treasures but this was before the DVD age and I don't think it's been converted over yet.

Now I know about 'Ryan' and 'Lorenzo'. I should really look into the other nominations. I knew one of those two would win but I ignored the rest. :(

Mike Gabriel directed and storyboarded the 2004 short film, Lorenzo. The concept for the short was originated by Disney legend Joe Grant in the 1940s. When he came back to work at Disney in the 1990s, Grant re-ignited Lorenzo as an idea for a short around the time Don Hahn put a new Fantasia into development. Lorenzo was nominated for an Oscar in 2005. Lorenzo won the "Best Short "Annie award in 2005 and also holds the distinction of being the first Disney film to win the European award Le Grand Crystal that same year.
