"Shrek 2" had a distinct advantage because it opened a record number of theaters -- 4,163 screens.
The Matrix Reloaded (3,603)
Spiderman (3,615)
The Passion of the Christ (3,043)
The Return of the King (3,703)
Attack of the Clones (3,161)
The Phantom Menace (2,970)

Seeing as how Shrek 2 has significantly more than any of the other top blockbuster openings, I would agree that is an advantage when comparing total gross revenue. However Shrek 2's average revenue per theater is as much as 25% lower than the others listed above.

Still though, it is the best gross numbers for any animated movie.

Yeah, but those movies are primarily targeted towards teenagers and adults, who are considered adults when theaters compare children's tickets to adult's tickets. It's even more astonishing when you think about how many more tickets Shrek 2 had to sell to get that number since a large majority of the audience was children who get in for cheaper than adults do.

What are you sighing about? The fact its CGI or just non-Disney?
Shrek 2 is a top quality movie and it deserves the huge box office gross it did over the weekend. I plan on seeing it again soon.

Huh? Shrek 2 is targeted at teenagers and adults too.

Also, although children tickets are cheaper than adults, but when adults take children to the movies, the theaters can collect more money than if the children do not go. A lot of times when there is movie that might be good for children, I will go once by myself to check it out and then if it is suitable then I will go back again with 2-4 children and another adult with me.

DreamWorks Confirms Shrek 3 & 4 Source: http://www.comingsoon.net/news.php?id=4861
DreamWorks co-founder Jeffrey Katzenberg talked last week at the Cannes Film Festival about what a third and fourth "Shrek" would entail, now the studio has confirmed that they will indeed go through with two more films.

Reuters reports that with Shrek 2 earning a record $128.9 million in its first five days, the studio is moving ahead on the films, one by one. Head of DreamWorks animation, Ann Daly, said that "It wasn't really advisable to start working on three and four until we knew that we actually had something in two, and certainly this weekend confirmed that we do."

Daly said DreamWorks was in final talks with the principal voice actors to return, including Mike Myers and Cameron Diaz as the newlywed green ogres, Eddie Murphy as Donkey, and Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots.
This is great!! Shrek 3 and 4 whoa!!!
I must see Shrek 2 this weekend!!!
I wonder if Spider-Man 2 will beat Shrek 2 record.
Spider-Man Vs Shrek

Shrek 2 was a great movie but not as good compared with The Lion King and Finding Nemo. The fact it was screened in so many theaters is unfair. I hope it doesn't beat these 2 films in the box office.

It definetly wasn't better than Lion King but an argument can be made about Finding Nemo

I think it's better than Finding Nemo...I mean I like Finding Nemo, but I don't absolutely love it. My favorite thing about Finding Nemo is not the characters or story or any of that, it's that I love how it's an "underwater" movie. I was hoping so much to see a mermaid swim by in some part of the movie!

I'm sighing because the first Shrek movie was dross. Not the animation method. Not the studio. It was just dross, plain and simple.

Hehe... dross. ^_^

Gotta add that into my log of "fun British slang" - right along there with "manky" and "rubbish".

I saw Shrek almost a week ago and absolutley love it. Puss in boots was defintley my favorite character. But I truly hope they are not planning on making a 3rd one.To much of a good thing can be bad.

I enjoyed the movie, thought it was as good as the first. I am getting really sickof seeing Shrek's face though! It's insane....there's slurpies, minivans, m&m's, and just too much other junk to name. I'll be glad when this one dies down.

I definitely agree.

To me, Lion King is one of the best movies of all time. Finding Nemo was good, but kind of boring after multiple viewings. Shrek 2 on the other hand was more entertaining. I've seen it twice now and liked it more the second time. You catch a lot more in the second viewing. For those who've seen it, remember the lady frog in the bar.........

Well, I saw the movie the other day, and I loved it! Wow what an awesome movie! Just as good if not better than the original. Puss in Boots and the Fairy Godmother were wonderful. So many laugh out loud moments. It was great. :D

Let's hope Shrek 3 and 4 will be made with the same delicate quality. It'd be an absolute shame if they weren't.
