Well, I agree that everyone's opinion is their own and should be respected as valid. I prefer TLK, but for no real reason, and BATB is VERY close to it, imo. I agree that it's mostly a question of personal preference.
I don't really think that Oscar nods and wins hold much weight, though. For one, it's not fair to compare 1992 to 1994, they were different years. Oscar ceremonies are only measurements of the year that they evaluate. Furthermore, I don't really think much of the Academy's taste, and view it as a contest of politics, rather than quality. I value my own assessment of a film far more than there's. So while it does say something about a film's reception within Hollywood for that year, I don't find that to be a worthy argument for superiority of a film. Just my $0.2
Edit: Oh, and this starts a third page, so here's yet another reminder, remember to
vote for the movie you want to win in this round. If you haven't voted yet, you have about 3 and 1/2 hours to do so!

Well, I'm glad that it looks like The Lion King will win; that's certainly what I'm voting for.
To address some comments in this thread:
Prince Eric wrote:Anyway, Beauty and the Beast holds the record for most Academy Award nomination for an animated film. The Lion King only recieved four nominations, a feat that has been repeated and supassed by many animated films. Plus, they were all in the music categories. That should say something to everyone!

Academy Award nominations are anything but an infallible method for determining what movie is better than another.
PatrickvD wrote:I honestly believe a lot of people simply vote for the most popular one and not for the best one.
That's just silly. Why on earth would some one vote for a movie that they don't like as much just because it's more popular?!
Short of getting into Risterics over "favorite" and "best", for our purposes, the two are interchangeable and it's obviously all a matter of taste. I think you'd be hard-pressed to find a forum member who hasn't seen both of these films, so box office gross and/or home video sales really are a non-factor.
People may not get the Lion King hype in the same way I don't see Beauty and the Beast as being one of Disney's best films. When I compare Beauty and the Beast to The Lion King in terms of supporting characters, comedy, music, animation, and perhaps most importantly, story, there's no contest that I find the elements of the latter more effective and easier to connect with.
I can name a dozen Disney animated films that I think are stronger than Beauty and the Beast, but I suppose a simple Lion King will do.

Well, and with that, the tribe has spoken (and, for this game, for the final time!). The 42nd and final animated classic to be voted off the Disney Island is
Beauty and the Beast. That means that...
The Lion King
is the winner and ultimate Survivor!
Congrats to the victor! Still, it was a close vote!
I'll let TLK have its time in the spotlight as the winner, and sometime tomorrow afternoon or evening, I'll post the Live Reunion Discussion Thread, and you can all share your thoughts on the game then! Thanks for playing!
36 votes were cast in the final round. 19 of these votes went to The Lion King. 17 went to Beauty and the Beast.

Just your 20¢? ~_^
My thoughts exactly.
Beauty and the Beast pulled off an incredible feat by being nominated for a Best Picture Oscar, but that's not exactly a valid measure for its quality. The Oscars are really a self-preening, political ceremony that usually pick the Flavor of the Month (or Year, I should say) to win. How else can you explain
A Beautiful Mind winning in 2001?
Its historical significance shouldn't be a factor, either. "It ushered in a new era..." so what? That's talking more about the
series of films in the early 90s, and their combined quality on a whole, than it is speaking of the individual film in question - BatB.
I guess it really is mostly about personal preference. I don't think BatB
sucks, as someone put it - I think it's a marvelously made film - but it just doesn't move me that much. Yes, even when Belle's weeping over the Beast, strewn across his chest.

On the other hand, I've got a great weakness for animal flicks. I don't think it's the "cute animal" factor, but something more uh - allegorical? The symbolism in animal flicks resonate with me, for some reason. For me, an animal character is more sympathetic than a human, and I can relate more easily to an anthropomorphized animal - I dunno why. It just works for me. Much better than dancing teacups, anyway.

Risterics...

Guess he's got a whole philosophy named after him now, eh?
I completely agree with your reasons for TLK's effectiveness - short of my pretentiously profound "animal allegory" statements, TLK is just my "favoriter" film. ~_^

Hmm. Was that a typo, or do I really value my opinions that much more? You decide
(Ok, we've kind of plowed past the winner... ladies and gents, please scroll up to see it, if you missed it!)

It remember when a similar poll was made last year and B&tB won. It all depends on which release came out recently. People tend to remember the movies they have seen recently. I wonder what it will be like when Aladdin comes out. Maybe the top two will be different?

No, it isn't so. The Lion King was the newest Platinum release before the Animated Classics countdown last year, not Beauty and the Beast, which was released in 2002.

Wow, this is the first time I've EVER seen The Lion King win. I think this may be due to people getting re-aquainted (or perhaps aquainted for the first time) with the films thanks to the DVD, so it's fresher in their minds than it was in other animation contests.
