"Stand Up" from the film
Harriet has won Best Song at the
Society of Composers and Lyricists Awards. It also won recently at the
Hollywood Music in Media Awards. I guess that song is also one of the favorites to win the Oscar then. It'll be interesting to see who wins at the Critics' Choice this Sunday. I think it's probably the only other awards ceremony with a song category before the Oscars.

"(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again" from
Rocketman and "Glasgow" from
Wild Rose tied for Best Song at the
Critics' Choice Awards.

The Oscar
nominations are out. Menken has been snubbed once again.

I can't believe they nominated Randy Newman. Twice!

Do members of the music branch just see his name and nominate him without even listening to his work? His song for Toy Story 4 was literally one of the worst of the year! WTF?
Best Original Song
Breakthrough — "I'm Standing With You"
Frozen II — "Into the Unknown"
Harriet — "Stand Up"
Rocketman — "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again"
Toy Story 4 — "I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away"
Best Original Score
Joker
Little Women
Marriage Story
1917
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

The Toy Story 4 song wasn’t very good. “Speechless” would have been a more deserving nominee, and I didn’t even like that song very much, either. As for Beyonce, there’s been a trend in the Oscars Best Song category where a major recording artist is snubbed in the nominations— this year, I guess you could count both Beyonce and Taylor Swift.

"Glasgow" was also a more deserving nominee but the Academy had to vote for Randy Newman again.

I'm probably going to get beat up for saying this, but the Toy Story 4 song is probably my favourite of the nominees. Are there better songs that could have been nominated? Sure, I was rooting for "Unbreakable", "Beautiful Ghosts" (neither of which made the short list) and any of the LEGO Movie 2 songs. I like "Into the Unknown", but it's not my favourite song in Frozen 2 (I was more partial to "Lost in the Woods" and "Show Yourself").
All of the best song nominees are decent, in my opinion, but I'm a sucker for Randy Newman and I like the bounciness of "I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away." But Elton John will probably win, which I guess I would be okay with.

It's funny how the Academy changed the rules just to screw Menken back in the day, but they practically prop Newman up all these years later. Rarely has anything he's done for Disney/PIXAR deserved the awards show praise. Apparently he's in the "in" crowd though, and that's all that matters with awards, not talent.

I think the nomination for Best Score was deserved, but the Best Song one is more questionable. I like the song myself, but I agree that there were others that were more deserving, like the one you mentioned ("Glasgow") or of course, "Speechless".

I think you will love this,
Sotiris.

Randy Newman's reaction to his Best Song nomination:
“I’m very happy. I loved working with Josh Cooley on ‘Toy Story 4.’ I’m proud of this song. I like it as well as any song I’ve written for a movie. I hope it wins.”

His comment made me laugh. I actually love his sincerity.

You know me well!
I like it as well as any song I’ve written for a movie. I hope it wins.
So every song he's ever written means exactly the same to Newman? He has no favorites or any one that is special to him in some way? That's normal.

Is it sincerity though or just bluntness and ego? We all know everyone's rooting for themselves to win. But at least others are tactful and gracious enough to praise their colleagues and fellow nominees in the process. Clearly, that's not that case for him.

Honestly it sounds like he's egotistical enough to think all his songs are at the same level of quality so they're all his favorites.

To me that part sounded like he wanted to defend the song. Maybe he has heard some criticisms that it's not as good as his previous songs for Pixar, or that it was a surprise it was nominated.

Yeah, I don't know, maybe you're right. What I meant is that others probably have the same ego, but they just don't dare to say what they really think because it's frowned upon. Maybe it's just that he doesn't care what people may think of him.

I'm glad all the original artists are going to perform this year. The only one missing is Taron Egerton, but he's not the main singer in "(I'm Gonna) Love Me Again" but Elton John. Maybe he'll be part of the performance too even though he hasn't been announced, but I've noticed that when an actor or actress was one of the favorites in their category to be nominated and doesn't end up getting the nomination, they usually don't attend the ceremony even when their movie is nominated for something. I guess it might be an awkward situation for them. I think that's why Emily Blunt didn't perform her song last year.
Speaking of the song performances, it's a shame Naomi Scott didn't get the chance to perform at the show, but I hope she and Mena Massoud are at least invited to present at the ceremony. Aladdin was a huge success last year, so I think their presence would be good for the ratings.

I still can't believe Taron Egerton wasn't nominated for his performance. Especially after Rami Malek for Bohemian Rhapsody.
Yeah, I'd love to see Naomi and Mena present.

Randy Newman
now says "I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away" is his favorite from his nominated songs along with "You’ve Got a Friend in Me":
l really like this song. Of all the songs I’ve had nominated, along with “You’ve Got a Friend in Me,” I like this one best.
He also shows more humility this time:
The fact is, they staged a great picture, really, and hopefully the music is up to that level.

I'll give him "You've Got a Friend in Me" but I honestly don't even remember "I Can't Let You Throw Yourself Away."

I despise You've Got a Friend in Me and I hate that it has become popular.
Songs which were written by him that I like are When She Loved Me, Down in New Orleans and Almost There.

I love When She Loved Me. My favorite of his collection and it always gets me crying especially if I'm watching the song from the film with the visuals and not just listening to it.
His songs for TPATF don't do anything for me. There's a reason none of them became instant classics or really entered the public consciousness. Even Menken's weakest efforts in Tangled were a world apart and I'm not even really a fan of Tangled's music.

I was only going to quote the first part, but I agreed with it all. I had only wanted to say: I thought I was the only one who felt exactly that way (about YGaFiM).

When other people mention it alongside well-known Disney classics like "A Whole New World," "Circle of Life," etc., it unconsciously makes me grit my teeth.

The songs you listed are my favorites he's done for Disney, too, plus "My Name Is James"; "Friends On the Other Side" is alright anyway... I haven't seen
Cats Don't Dance in quite a while, but I did always like its music.
