I haven't read anything about that. I really do hope they revive the 6th film in that case.

I think that to continue the series without Johnny Depp is ludicrous, and that if they do a sixth movie without him it will fail.

I agree that the movie should move forward with Johnny. I think it will fail without him. They could maybe do spin offs without him on Disney Plus.

There's been considerable backlash towards Johnny Depp being dropped from the series. Ironic, since after Fantastic Beasts, fans were clamoring for Depp to be removed from that series. Now that we know he's actually innocent and his performance was raved about in CoG, suddenly executives feel uneasy about his baggage and want him dropped from both franchises.

How come Ted Elliot is attached to the project but not Terry Rossio? Isn't it weird hiring just one half of the screenwriting duo?
Pirates of the Caribbean may set sail once again. Disney has hired veteran Pirates scribe Ted Elliott and Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin to develop a story for a new Pirates adventure feature. The move is designed to propel fresh wind into Pirates, one of the largest-hauling film franchises of all time that introduced hard-luck and hard-drinking pirate Jack Sparrow into Disney fandom and pop culture.
The hiring of Elliott and Mazin puts Pirates in the early stages of development, with the duo tasked to find a direction and story. it is unclear at this stage if Sparrow would return as a character or if Depp would return as actor. Jerry Bruckheimer is expected to once again be at the helm as producer.

Terry Rossio did get a credit on Pirates 5, without Ted Elliot, curiously enough.
Rossio recently got a lot of flack for his anti-vaccination comments. Not saying that's the reason he's not working on the new Pirates, but if the producers disagreed strongly with those remarks...

Looking this up, it turns out Rossio
said the n-word on Twitter too so that's probably the reason why he wasn't hired for this. His apology seemed sincere but the Internet doesn't forgive and forget.

The anti-vaccination views already make me question his judgment but using the n-word just seals his fate. Of course his apology will be sincere because he doesn't want to lose his livelihood.

Rumor: Zac Efron as Jack Sparrow:

I could see him playing Jack...

Not true. This is based on a story by We Got This Covered which the Peruvian website Libero took and then Inside the Magic cited as its source.

Oh.

At least it was labeled a rumor! Thanks for clarifying!

No problem!

I noticed lately that Inside the Magic has become very clickbait-y and reports things from disreputable sources.

Lol, Zac Efron as Jack Sparrow. I'm shocked they even found that credible enough to report.

I can see it, though. He has a goofy side to him, and I can see it. I mean, he doesn't look like Johnny Depp, but besides that...!

I would have found this report more believable if it was in the mid-2000s during Zac's High School Musical days and he was being cast as Jack Sparrow's son lol. Sounds like something Disney would have done. Especially because we did get Will Turner's son in later films and another Disney Channel star, Shia LaBeouf, got cast as Indiana Jones' son during that time.
But I just can't see Jack Sparrow being recast right now. Maybe way later when Johnny Depp is much older and can't reprise the role, but certainly not now.

The article had mentioned a prequel, so that's why I thought maybe Zac wasn't a bad choice, despite not looking like Johnny...

I could see Zac Efron playing a lead (similar to Orlando Bloom) in a reboot or spin-off.

Oh ok, I didn't read the full article and going by the title of this thread, I assumed it was a sequel so I was wary about Johnny Depp being recast. TBH, I haven't seen Zac Efron in a lot of stuff that aren't comedies so I'm not sure if he has the acting chops for it but he got a lot of praise for the Ted Bundy film and I watched the first half myself and I did like his portrayal. It didn't feel like I was watching Zac at all in the film so maybe he's way more talented than people give him credit for.
