Don’t look for any new songs from the duo for the rest of 2018. They have been collaborating with composer Alan Menken on additional songs for Disney’s live-action “Aladdin,” due in May 2019, and are working on Disney’s live-action adaptation of “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” (writing new songs, reworking old tunes, “creating a new adaptation,” says Paul) for which there is currently no date.

Reworking old tunes scares me a little. I understand that BATB had some lyrics reworked to fit the new adaptation but at least Menken was at the helm of that.

I forgot the same guys attached to this (from La La Land) were also working with Menken on Aladdin. Hopefully they do a great job on both these films. Why oh why couldn't they have been attached to The Little Mermaid instead of that parasite, LMM???

I think both sets of artists can do well. Moana had good melodies, after all.

I mean, you don't have to like his songs, but I think calling Miranda a parasite is a bit of a step too far.

Why is Lin-Manuel Miranda so hated around here? I've noticed some users are actually rooting against 'Mary Poppins Returns' just because he's in it.

It seems to me like people around here don't like that Menken doesn't do the music and take it out on the person who ends up doing it (Newman, Miranda). The Lopezes are an exception even though I think they are not that great with the exception of "Let it Go" and "Frozen Heart". Even their somewhat good songs has lyrics like "We used to be best buddies" or "Don't know if I'm elated or gassy".

Oh, good, you brought up exactly what blows up your first point *for* me, thanks. Sorry you don't like the Lopezes--the Moana soundtrack has just as bad or worse lyrics than those, if you want to talk about it--but this has nothing to do with Alan Menken (outside of the fact that Miranda decided to attach himself like, yes, a parasite to the TLM film). There’s also the fact that I was just rooting on the
La La Land writers, which makes this assertion
even more ridiculous.

Seriously?! Miranda might have a tendency to use the same word too much time in a verse, which is a major flaw, but he never stooped so low as to use "Jinx. Jinx again" in his songs, and let's not even mention the dreadful In Summer and Fixer Upper. The Lopezes contributed to Frozen's childish tone as much as Jennifer Lee's bad writing.
And you don't actually know why those decisions were made in TLM's production. It's ridiculous to call someone you don't like a parasite just because he's involved in a project you don't want him to be involved in.

Oh, gee, a children's movie being childish!!! High crimes! The lyrics in Anna's song suit the character. "In Summer" and "Fixer Upper" are no worse than "You're Welcome" and "Shiny" (the latter only works at all because Jermaine Clement sells it so well, something that could be said about most of Randy Newman's terrible work in TP&TF). And while the Moana soundtrack can match Frozen's lows, it fails to match any of its highs. "For the First Time in Forever," "Let It Go," and "Do You Want to Build a Snowman?" blow it out of the water.
"I will sparkle like a wealthy woman's neck, just a sec!"

Aladdin is just the start of Pasek and Paul’s collaboration with Disney, and the duo have been brought on to revamp the music for a live-action Snow White movie. “We’re taking the original [1937] animated film and updating it by writing new songs, reinterpreting some of the old songs, and creating a fully fleshed-out, robust live-action musical,” Pasek says.
“It’s a challenge because you’re really trying to expand something that so many people know so well and has been a part of so many people’s lives,” he adds, “but it’s been really fun because ‘Heigh-Ho’ in the original film is a very short song but we’re trying to expand it a little bit in this version. So getting to play around with that is really exciting.”

There's been so many complaints about how Speechless is too pop-influenced to suit Aladdin so I can't even imagine what will be said about the new soundtrack for a film as old as Snow White.

I’m fine with them reworking
all the music. My issue with Speechless is that it doesn’t fit with the older material and lyrics. Doing all the songs will at least mean they’ll all have the same sound, and I can take their empty lyrics if all the songs are that way. But putting them beside a lyricist like Ashman, it’s a terribly unfair contrast.

I didn't care for Speechless and I didn't like the changes they made to lyrics from the old songs.
I don't know how they'll handle Snow White...probably not good.

The ironic thing is that they included undertones of Speechless in the score but it still sounds completely separate from the rest of the film's songs. I still appreciate the song by itself, generic lyrics aside. It's catchy if nothing else.
Unfortunately, most people consider Snow White so dated that they won't be particularly reverent towards major changes in the songs. I hope the romantic songs in particular (I'm Wishing, One Song, Someday My Prince Will Come) won't be too radically overhauled, the latter song in particular. It may not gel in today's culture but it's a classic nevertheless.

They should just try to write new songs that fit the old style! And yes, "Someday My Prince Will Come" will always be an eternal classic no matter the socio-political climate of the day.

Honestly it sounds more like they're gonna update the old songs to sound more fresh and contemporary rather than create new songs that sound like they could have come from 1937.

Yes, that is what it sounds like. And I just fear the end product will be bad, while them trying to emulate the old style would have a better end product?

My biggest fear with a Snow White remake is that they could change her character. In the original, she's so sweet and kind and naive. I fear they will change her, to avoid critics from feminists.

I hope they'll find an actress perfect for the role.

This is my biggest fear too. I really hope they'll select a director who cherishes the original source material and wants to preserve Snow White's character, as Kenneth Branagh did for Cinderella's.
