DavisDVD reports the following (it's basically what we've been expecting, except for the stuff in bold which comes as a great surprise to me, but I guess it shouldn't...):
"Aside from a newly spruced up anamorphic transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, this definitive collection is set to feature a newly-recorded audio commentary track (with participants to be announced), a number of behind-the-scenes, music, and animation featurettes, vintage footage and specials, trailers, set top games, and more. Additionally, look for stars Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke to be reunited in a new live action/animated sequence, with music by Oscar-winner Richard Sherman, especially created for the DVD."

WHY?
I hope it's just a re-enacment of the original sequence, as a BONUS FEATURE!

I'm 99% sure it'll just be a bonus feature as Julie and Dick won't be able to fit into the film seamlessly at all considering their ages. Disney's done some crazy things, but I don't think they're THIS crazy.

A wrap-around sequence making the whole of the film a "flashback"? Or a epilogue at the end of the film?
If Disney wanted to they could do it. I doubt they would want to though.

I think this is awesome!!!!! i can't wait. this is a totally cool idea. in case you can't tell i really dig the whole reunite the cast idea. it just sounds like it will be a lot of fun.
OF COURSE THEY ARE NOT GOING TO INTEGRATE THIS INTO THE MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!
it will be a bonus feature or easter egg (as yet undetermined).
don't ask my source, but this will NOT be featured in the film

OK, Disney went too far this time. Even if it won't be integrated into the film, come on, Julie and Dick Van Dyke are too old to reprise their roles. Well, maybe they intend to substitute them with digital stand-ins...
Does this "all-new song" banner really boost sales? First it is Beauty and the Beast, then Lion King, Aladdin, Alice, Brother Bear, Pocahontas and now Mary Poppins!
Money, money, money!

I think you're being a little unkind with your "Money, Money, Money" comment. It's good that Disney are releasing songs that were written for the original films. What's more doubtful is doing whole new animation and sequences for the songs. I can live with storyboard reconstructions, or even finishing half-completed animation, but doing whole new sequences seems wrong to me. I don't mind them being integrated into the film (or not) because so far they have offered people the choice each time they have done this.
I do think the songs in the Lion King and Beauty and the Beast were wrong though. We have a copy of Human Again playing to storyboards on the bonus disc - it really wasn't needed to have been animated at all. I would rather have other unused song demos on the second disc. As for the Lion King, well, like I say, at least they offered the choice (and that's the only good thing I can say).
At least Disney are spending some money of these supplements, even if it is only to make money. And I'd rather have unused songs over set-top games!

You're right James, it is good that Disney is making this deleted stuff available, but it is also ridiculous that they are sacrifying the original movies for that. Besides, it doesn't seem right for actors in their 60s (70s?) to reprise roles they did in their 20s-30s.
Unfortunately, after killing traditional animation, replacing feature animation with cheapquels and releasing such things as the "Beauty and the Beast" and "Brother Bear" DVDs (what the heck were they thinking? Look at that HEAVILY compressed picture), it seems Disney is all about money nowadays.

I didn't really like the cover art too much, and the idea of a new scene (whether integrated into the film or not) doesn't really please me much, but if it turns out like the great ALICE IN WONDERLAND DVD, it should be fine.

you guys aren't giving this sequence thing its proper due. it won't be like the lion king or beauty and the beast because those were integrated into the film.
it isn't even going to be like alice in wonderland either. that song was originally intended for the film.
this is a brand new song written like last year or this year (i'm not sure) and will probably have julie andrews and dick van dyke in their "chalk pavement" costumes sing a song with animated characters. this song was NOT supposd to be in the film, isn't going to be in the film, and never will be integrated into the film!
think of this more as a music video, but with quality preformances instead of Jump 5. if done porperly i think there will be a nostalgic value and happy feeling when watching this number. well worth promoting, i think.
of course the animation will look like super different from the film, and yes julie and dick have aged a bit, but really this "music video" comes from three old friends wanting to collaborate again:
julie andrews
dick van dyke
richard sherman
lets let them have fun and enjoy what they show us.

Hey, I'm cool about it. I'm just worried and all considering...

If this is an extra on disc 2 or whatever I think it would be interesting to see. It will take up a whopping 5 minutes at most on the disc, but I think would be good to see, and hear them. Especially if they add in the characters with them...

Sounds like a really nice bonus feature with Julie and Dick. As Disneyfella said, of course they won't put it into the film. Hopefully it will be something classy and well done.
It's great to hear that Julie and Dick will be participating in the new 2 disc set. It will probably include brand new interviews as well. This is exciting!!

It sounds really cool- if you're right about it not being in the film, that is.

I'm really looking forwards to get Mary Poppins since I have the Gold Collection I don't know if I should get the 2-disc Special Edition.

I'm confused... you're looking forward to getting it- but aren't sure if you will? Lemme know if I misunderstood... I would suggest the 2-Disc anywyas (I have the Gold, but I'm getting the 2D SE). We can't really reccommend it until it comes out, though.

correct Awallaceunc, I don't want to have two Mary Poppins but, with all the extras I really want the 2-Disc.
Maybe I will get it in December after all.
