Inside Out (and Star Wars: The Force Awakens) made the AFI Movies of the Year list. Though I suppose this isn't particularly surprising or notable, given that they routinely include crowd-pleasing blockbusters and animated films in their lists: several Pixar films, Shrek, Happy Feet, and Coraline have all made the list in the past.

I'm pleasantly surprised with the animated feature list. I didn't expect both Boy and the World and When Marnie Was There to make it. At most, I expected one of them, and I wouldn't have been surprised to see The Good Dinosaur on there over both of them. Inside Out is really the only truly mainstream film on the list, which is actually kinda surprising, but refreshing.

I liked The Good Dinosaur more than most here but I'm also pleasantly surprised by these out of the box nominations. Peanuts had interesting animation but other than that it was thoroughly mediocre. Thank GOD no Minions.

Strong nominations. Probably the wrong winner though.

As glad as I was Inside Out won for Best Animated Feature, it seems Pixar can't get a break with the Best Screenplay nomination.

Part of why I've ignored the racial controversy behind the Oscars (for which there is) is because the Oscars have screwed over a whole rainbow of people not limited to skin color. Up until this year, there was a popular meme behind Leonardo DiCaprio's inability to win an Oscar. And although John Williams has garnered over 50 nominations throughout his career, he only ever won five Oscars. Of course, we already know how they repeatedly reduce animated films to the "kiddie" section, seldom giving any nominations to the most prestigious categories, and now putting Pixar against the glass ceiling.
