Personally, I'd prefer if both versions were included (Academy and Matted) for the films in question. Satisfy both camps and call it a day. Then I wouldn't have to read some of the petty, ill-informed, inaccurate, and frankly, juvenile posts from some of the more entitled Disney fans out there.
Me too, but we all know it will never happen. Seamless branching is one thing (like how they completely failed with Beauty and the Beast and had a half-assed "workprint"), but this would require either a double-sided "flipper" disc, or the quality would take a huge hit. Or they could always do like they did with Finding Nemo and have two discs, one with each ratio, each disc having exclusive features to make the most of the two-disc set.
But nowadays Disney is all about being cheap (no chapter inserts? Eco-boxes? Please.) so again, it'll never happen.
They don't even need to do that, as you don't really lose any image quality with blu-ray when you set your TV to zoom (Unless maybe you have an 80" TV). I think they should just put the Acadamy ratio versions on there and tell people, if you REALLY want to see it cropped then hit the damn zoom button on your HD TV to fill up the screen.
This. And heck, unlike pan-and-scan (note the word PAN - many times they DID actually pan the camera side to side to catch the full action), I'm like 99.9% positive that for the cropped versions of these Disney movies, it's dead-center and doesn't move at all. So you could easily re-create such a video by using a simple crop filter, whether the zoom on your DVD player, or encoding it on a computer. Whereas if you were trying to re-create a pan-and-scan transfer of widescreen movies, you'd often have the wrong portion of the picture if you just did a "dumb crop".
That's going on the WIST list
What IS "WIST"?
I've really not understood all the time about the ratio thing, I just grew up learning one thing. That Widescreen is KING
In many cases it is, but one thing I hate about sites like widescreen.org is that they don't mention that earlier movies WERE actually shot in a non-widescreen aspect ratio. My general policy is "whatever has the most picture", save for obvious things that weren't meant to be seen, such as hanging boom mics in live action movies. If it was filmed in Academy, I generally prefer to watch it that way, assuming it exists. (I would love to find a scan of the Super-35 Terminator 2, since both versions of those are missing like half the picture, just different parts for each version...)

On the topic of Sword In the Stone, I noticed that iTunes is selling it in HD (720p), as well as Xbox Live (supposedly 1080p, I will be checking that later), and it's actually in 1.33:1.
I went ahead and bought the XBL version, and recorded it to my computer in 1080 so I can check it. If we do end up getting a cropped Blu-Ray, I might try to make my own fan release with that version, since it has the full frame.
I noticed a trend, though - Xbox Live has almost all the DAC's now, those which were already on Blu-Ray are all widescreen, just like the Bl-Rays (same ratios too, anywhere from 1.66:1-1.85:1)... but ones that weren't (101 Dalmatians, Sword In the Stone) are in fullscreen.
(By the way, I know 101 Dalmatians was instructed to be projected in Academy, but notice how Sword was 1.75:1 in the press kit and Disney still kept it Academy on the DVDs? Yet more proof that they don't really even go by that, they just do whatever they feel like doing)
Oh, and Xbox Live has the full (128-minute) Pete's Dragon in HD... the official Blu-Ray release is much, much shorter than the DVDs... any interest in getting a rip of that?

For someone who takes delight in pointing out Disney's errors, you should have already known that the Blu-Ray actually runs the full 128 minutes. The "88 minutes" on the back cover is a misprint.

I'm surprised you haven't rationalized THAT into "more proof that they don't really even go by that, they just do whatever they feel like doing"...

To be honest, I've never actually watched the Blu-Ray, I just bought it and put it on my shelf. I do know that the UK Blu-Ray is a shorter edit though, so I saw the 88 minutes and figured that was the same cut.
I do know that Pete's Dragon has quite a few different runtimes, and I am trying to track down all of them so I can make an "ultimate" cut with seamless branching, letting you choose which version you play. And like I mentioned, from what anyone knows, there IS no 134-minute, THAT was also a misprint.

The Blu-ray will be cropped, the clips from Disney have proven that. Needless to say the 4:3 version has the old "restoration" which looks pretty bad right now.

The one on Xbox Live actually looks really good. In fact, I almost think it looks *too* good, kinda like Cinderella
Want me to upload a short clip so you can see? Granted, due to technical reasons (see below if you're really interested), I had to record it in 1080i and then will deinterlace it to get progressive.
Code: Select all
The Xbox 360, when using HDMI, forces you to use HDCP (HD Content Protection) when watching videos. Some apps like Netflix won't even open if you aren't. Systems like the PS3 require HDCP at all times, even for just playing games. The whole point of the content protection is so that people don't record the videos, and as such, all the recording devices that can use HDMI do not work if the system requires HDCP. I have a Hauppauge HD PVR 2, which will do 1080p video capture over HDMI - and I have used it to record gameplay from my Xbox 360, but as soon as I try to play the movie, it stops and tells me it needs an HDCP-enabled connection. Therefore I am forced to use Component, and even though you can do 1080p over component cables, the Xbox 360 will automatically change to 1080i when playing videos - something about copyright companies not wanting people to be able to record HD-DVDs and other HD videos using component, which cannot be encrypted by definition since it's an analog connection. Supposedly, even though it's interlaced, it's 60 frames per second, so you can effectively make that 1080p 30 frames per second which is still good - especially given that the movies are only ~24fps.
Do the trailers really provide proof of the aspect ratio though? Because if so, we could assume that Jungle Book will be 4:3
Amazon has been wrong before, and even the back of the box has been wrong (I'm thinking of Aladdin and the King of Thieves, which was a direct-to-video movie so naturally it was done in 4:3... the back of the box says fullscreen 1.33:1, but you pop in the disc and it's anamorphic widescreen and cropped.

)

I've seen the iTunes version. It's the same master as the 45th Anniversary DVD. It has scratches, dust etc on the picture. Is the Xbox Live version any different? The Blu-ray will look like this

I actually think it looks stunning. The colors are exquisite and I could see nuances in Wart's animations I had never really noticed.

Yeah that trailer for The Sword in the Stone looks awesome and the quality looks great. I don't see many if any problems with it.

I think this lawsuit may affect the bonus features for The Jungle Book Blu-ray. The deleted Gilkyson songs which were included in the Platinum may not be ported over because of this.

That first link you have says in order to read the rest I would have to sign up for a free trial to their website.
Also who do you think is right in this case?

This sounds similar to the Peggy Lee lawsuit (which she won). I'm not sure how much clout descendants have though in a case like this.

...But the UK are getting it in a few weeks, yes ? And it is actually labelled as a Diamond ? With Mermaid following straight after.
Still think big releases should get at least a Fall release date, rather than the no mans land of now.

Why? So we can have 10 releases at once? Let them spread it out a bit
